Well, my tranny woes just got worse. Now the blasted thing isn't just slipping....it is so bad that it seems to make the engine cut out at speeds over 40mph. I am going to put a new fuel filter and pump in the thing today and have the junkyard-special ignition module tested. If neither of those helps the problem, it is time for a tranny rebuild. I talked with a VERY reputable shop here in Corpus Christi and he said he will rebuild my torque converter for a reasonable price AND he will rebuild it to my specs. So, since I don't really know squat about torque converters (does anyone REALLY understand them???) I am asking you fellow FSJ-ers to assist me once again in this Jeep-building endeavor. Here are my engine and transmission specs 1.) AMC 360 bored +0.060, forged pistons, 10/10 crank, 272/282 (adv duration) .448/.442 lift, 114 lobe centerline. Stock exhaust manifolds, dual outlet pipes with better-than-stock mufflers, 2.5" pipes, 2V Motorcraft 2150 carb (freshly rebuilt with working altitude compensation circuit) and stock 2V intake manifold. (I know this carb is starving my engine and holding a LOT of power back....but not for long) 2.) Transmission is from a 1985 Grand Wagoneer. TF727, non-lockup converter. Dana 300 transfer case. B&M Star Shifter for the tranny, stock Grand Wagoneer tranny cooler with 5/16" stainless steel cooler lines 3.) Axles are the standard Dana 30 front, AMC 20 rear with (I can't believe I am actually admitting this) stock (MAN that hurts) 2 (ahem) 2.73 gearsets and 31x10.50 AT's. Believe me that I am NOT the guy that put 31's on a stock axle. I just found out about it last weekend...that is to be another chapter in this Jeep saga. The ignition system has been modified with the Team Rush upgrade to Ford TFI coil and large diameter distributor. I keep my plugs gapped at 0.042" and my timing set at a (very steady) 8*BTDC. So....with these specs, what would you guys out there recommend that I have done to this converter? This CJ is my daily driver for right now, so I can't take it down for a week. I am planning to do the actual 727 rebuild myself and, of course, leave the torque converter to the pros. Are there any tips or tricks that I haven't seen before when rebuilding a TF727? By this I guess I am asking if there are any neat little mods that I can do (other than a shift programmer plate) to the internals of the tranny to get better performance from my Jeep. With that, I leave you guys and head to class/work for a couple of hours. Please let me know of ANY suggestions or tips that any of you may have. Thanks in advance. Keep on Jeepin'!!!! You'll need the winch cradle on this bumper to make it work since it's a front mount (mounts behind the face of the bumper). It lurched both ways when I tried it, so it's not totally seized. The fairlead goes with the bumper as well. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 12:40:19 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: Re: vacuum advance wanted A: I dug this up for an AMC-lister. If you have an AMC 6 cyl with the Presto-no-lite dist (mid '70's) the vac advance part number is GP/Sorensen VCA57 or its Niehoff equivalent, AL-345. ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1559 **************************
