A: I just picked up another Comanche today for parts ('87 4 cyl TBI 5 speed 4x4 with correct canopy) that rattles like a diesel (previous owner swapped the timing chain and rebuilt the head 5,000 miles ago because it had a burnt valve, then it made this noise so he parked it) I towed it home behind my MJ and I now have a replacement TBI computer for my MJ truck (kept shutting off with no spark) and many other parts. I think I know what caused the shut off problem now (I drove a long ways the last 3 days with no problem because I had my heat turned off. The problem started right after my heat was fixed and I saw today the ECM box has the heat vent aimed right at it!) I think I need to swap the wire from the CPS kit I bought into my Comanche as well, but I'm not sure yet which terminals it hooks up to on the box. (I have a book on it's way!) I hope to work on both the Comanche and J10 this week (wed is my only day off) but if it rains, my son and I are going to rearrange my garage so I can get one vehicle inside to work on. I'm looking for local 3.54 gears yet for my J10's front diff and I think the new Comanche has a D44 with 4.10, not 5.13 as the DSPO thought, but at least I'll be able to make a 4x4! (and get rid of the wife's '99 Ranger!) If I sell enough other stuff quickly, I can keep my winch or trade up to one that will fit my new bumpers. Work tomorrow, then a day off, then 5 more days of work w/o a break! ( ugh! At the store I moved out of no less!) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 12:09:57 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: J series On Tue, 5 Feb 2002, Tony's Auto Collision Center wrote: >-->I am building a J series jeep pickup and am looking for a new body parts source. It came with clutches, seals, thrust washers, o-rings, etc. The new converter will be in tomorrow morning. I was kinda disappointed that it didn't come with bands like the guy at the parts house said it did, but, oh well. Cost? $170 TOTAL. Anyway, here's what the kit has. It came with 8 clutch discs that are grooved on the friction surfaces. Within that number, 4 are grooved with wide spacing between the grooves and 4 are grooved with narrow spacing between the grooves. The clutches are made by Raybestos. The o-rings are of LOTS of different sizes. The gaskets that the kit included are the pan gasket, pump gasket, and valve body gasket. There are some little gaskets that are coated with the same stuff that exhaust donuts are coated with. (To be perfectly honest, I don't remember ever having seen these in a overhaul kit for a TF727. The package says Motorcraft on it. Any ideas out there? They're kinda rectangular with rounded ends, two circular holes at the ends and a square hole in the middle.) The kit included two lip seals: one for the front pump and another that looks like it goes to the tailshaft housing/output shaft. There are also several new lock washers for the front pump bolts and about 10 new lock rings for the planetary gear sets. So, there you have it. I am about to go where few dare to tread: the great void in the internals of an automatic transmission. Wish me luck as I embark on this daring journey.
