I checked it out and I hope my tranny doesn't need that kind of work. It has been some time since I last overhauled a slushbox. The last one I did was a TH400 from a Cherokee Chief. I have a manual somewhere, but I don't know where my wife and I put it when we moved. I am almost sure that it is in a box somewhere in out storage place. Anyway, the extent of this rebuild is going to be clutch disc removal/replacement, THOROUGH cleaning of each and every part that I come across, replacement of all the seals and gaskets, band adjustments where necessary, and replacement of the torque converter. The kit I bought was SUPPOSED to come with bands, but it didn't, so I am hoping that I won't get into the tranny and end up having to replace the bands. Jim suggested that I thoroughly check the sprag area for cracks. I also remember something about an over-running clutch in there. With that said, I am off the get my torque converter from the parts house. The tranny comes out tomorrow and the overhaul process starts at 7am Saturday morning. Let's all keep our fingers crossed... (BW Wires?) Anyway, My MSD install worked fine, first time. I left as much of the stock wires as possible. Where did you put yours, on the passenger fender ? My thought is: Did you tie into the ignition switch signal at the coil? You may have that one hot all the time, so of course it will start when your starter motor is enabled by the key. Mine seems to run better, but mileage did not increase. I changed the polarity on the pickup coil, that really messed things up. I could only get it to run - poorly - when far advanced. What year is yours ? Mine is '89, so I can get specific wiring colors and how I tied in with MSD. I suggest about 8 degrees BTDC, but if you have no vac advance, probably set it as high as you can and the starter motor still turns it over. If your vac advance is leaking, I think this could contribute to poor running. - - Landon '89 GW Austin ==== Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2002 08:14:54 -0700 From: "Daniel Beiers" Subject: fsj: msd problems on full size jeep - sorry for x-post Guys, Last night I did the TFI ignition upgrade on my 85 Grand Wagoneer, using and MSD TFI coil, MSD heli-coil wires, and the MSD cap and Rotor Kit (it was 5 bucks less than Checker and 10 less than Napa to use the MSD parts) http://www.ifsja.org/tech/electrical/ignitionupgrade.shtml At the same time I installed the MSD 6A.
