A: You can use the 6 cyl or other V8 flywheel, but you will have to get a machine balancing shop to get it to match the proper weight offset for the 401. The 401 (and all AMC V8s) is externally balanced. The weight difference between the 360 and 304 is minimal and people have swapped those 2 w/o problems, but the 6 cyl is internally balanced and the 401 will vibrate apart in short order if you just put the flywheel on as is. From: Ken Gaines Scott, First of all, you need to remove the ALMOST invisible spacer that lives in the end of the 401's crankshaft. If you don't remove it, you will never get a pilot bushing in it. Second, you have to get the flywheel that came from a 401. If you want a new one, you can get one at www.partsmike.com. He sells them new and used. Anyway, if you use a flywheel from an I-6 or a smaller V8, it probably will be bad for your engine because the balancing between AMC engines is different. I know the I-6 is internally balanced where the AMC V8's were externally balanced. Congrats on finding a 401. I have been looking for one here in South Texas for about 2 years now. Hope this helps. O)||||||(O Ken I've got a '76 401 that used to be in front of a TH400. Now it's going in front of a T-18. What do I have to do with the flywheel? Basically I know nothing!!! So I come before the FSJ guru's to ask for advise. As I understand it I need to do *something* to change the flywheel so that it works with a manual rather than an auto but I don't know what. Any hints/tips/tricks/advise would be most appreciated! XJ stuff: 3.08 axles (D30 front and D35 rear) fairly complete $200 pair obo '87 Cherokee rear bumper (one corner rubber is dented) $35 with mounts '2wd front axle (good for trailer) $25, D35 housing $25 XJ taillights $20 each, power brake booster and master $25 MJ stuff: 4.10 D35 (I think. Haven't double checked the one in my '86 is the same ratio as the front. If not, it's 3.73 because it's 4 cyl) $200 I will be parting the MJ later on this month, but the 4 cyl is for sale without the TBI setup (still runs but has what sounds like a chain rattle) $100 or will sell pieces thereof (head was just done) FSJ stuff: front bumper from '84 J10 $50 (straight, but minor scratches), painted rear bumper (originally from a '79 J20) $100, Model 20 2.72 from '84 J10 (will have to wait till I get the D44 ready), gas tank from my '84 J10 $50 complete (I just need to drop it out yet and compare it to the MJ tank I have. Another dual tank setup for J10s converting to EFI may come out of this!) '84 Grand Wagoneer Model 20 rear diff 2.72 gears. Needs one tube rewelded, but appears to be fine otherwise $50 w/o brakes. 1 GW taillight $20 (forgot which side), '84 GW gas tank $25 (skidplate is spoken for, if I can arrange shipping) Other vehicle stuff: '76 Blazer Dana 44 front axle (3.08) SOA without spindles (unless you wait till I pull my '84 J10's front axle for regearing). CJ5 Model 20 open carrier 3.54 (was going to go in my J10's M20), pair of trailer axles wide enough to make a Jtruck tow dolly $75 (come with a free ex-boat trailer I didn't get title for) Misc shop stuff: Coates 1010 tire machine (non-air up style) $100 (after I finish swapping my tires!), Allen engine scope (haven't used it in 3 years. So old it still uses tubes and has a round screen!) $100. 1934 220V single phase Vee twin air compressor with 60 gallon vertical tank $250 (ran the gas station I worked at, car hoist and all) Wish my wiring was good enough here to use it. Much quieter than the 5 HP contractor one I'm using! Outboard oil (couple kinds. Synthetic and non-synthetic) $1 each Parts Wanted: J10 Dana 44 centered rear diff (gears don't matter, but its wider than Grand Wagoneer and WT Cherokee) I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm off to help my mom do services arrangements for my dad, so I won't be online till tonight or tomorrow eve. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 14:59:37 -0800 From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: fsj: 63 Willys Wagoneer progress I had to take a break for a couple weekends form the Wag to get the s-10 running again...so now that she's a runner again, I spent the other half of last weekend on the Willy's. The GM 350 engine looks (and sounds) to be running strong. I charged up the battery, and got the distributor in, set Top Dead Center, and fired it up. Then I find out about carburetor problems...something wrong with the choke was my only suspicion. I end up buying a rebuilt..and see that the choke assembly was gone, and the throttle body was cracked. The carb made it run great...I got the idle and float adjusted okay. Ran it long enough to open the thermostat and cycle water through the radiator engine...(no heater in the loop a that time.) Then I put the driver side fender back on, as well as the grill. Got the head lamps in, but can't find part of the wiring harness for them...probably in the other box-o-parts. Bolted in the 2nd battery tray too...do all these old dogs have two battery trays? looks like it could be a home-job. oh year, I put the hood back on it too. Finally looks like a wagoneer again! Next is to put in the NP203 transfer case with its own cross-member...after that comes rear driveshaft. I don't know yet, but it'll probably need to be shortened. Then steering, then brakes, then a seat...eventually a front driveshaft too..this is supposed to be a 4x4 project! I did have to remove the steering box to get the exhaust headers on...no biggie because I wanted to do up power steering which would need a new box and relocation of said box anyway...pitman arm pullers, what a cool tool! Question: Does anybody out there have experience with power steering swaps? Ideas or advice to share? I am a computer geek and electronic tech, not much of a motor head at all (although I am learning quickly). I live in NJ close to Fort Dix Army and McGuire Air Force bases. I bought a 1977 Jeep J10 in Oct of 2001, have replaced the exhaust headers and exhaust pipes/mufflers/two freeze plugs (now remember I'm not much of a motor head) all by myself. Right now I have a small wiring problem (short under the dash that caused it to smoke - -NO FIRE) that I am working on. If any of you have any books/webpages/other about body work I would appreciate it if you could point me in the correct direction as this J10 has some rust and I have never done fiberglass/bondo work before and any help would be appreciated Someone posted the Daimler-Chrysler phone # to buy FSM's, although I have an older Jeep I figured what the heck I'll give it a try....they didn't have the manual, but, the nice Daimler-Chrysler lady gave me the number of a company called Faxon. They are on the web at www.faxon.com although their page is not very informative. I gave them a call and asked about the FSM for my Jeep, in about 10 secs. the salesman (Rafer whom you should ask for as they get commission) told me they had it and it would be $69.00, and they have a 10 day guarantee. I also asked what other manuals they would have, Rafer told me they have 'most manuals, paint cards etc from 1902-present foreign and domestic.' THE SPECIFICS: Faxon 1-800-458-2734 Ask for Rafer Web page at www.faxon.com Thanks for any help and hope the Faxon # is a help too!
