Hi Folks. I'm thinking about fixing up my 88GW & if I'm going to go through the hassle of some sort of motor transplant it would be nice to fix up the body a bit. Would like to find a tailgate, hood, & driver side doors in the very popular medium gray so that I wouldn't HAVE to repaint. All my stuff is usable, but has some shallow dents & peeling clearcoat. The Tailgate is the most important since a previous owner used the bumper jack to change a rear tire w/o bothering to chock a wheel & now I have a strangely rectangular dent in the back of my tailgate. :) Anyone know of some fairly pristine gray body pieces that I can buy/trade for pretty reasonable? You may have to put front fender flares on (WT fenders) I have the set I was going to put on Elmo (I actually tried them on w/o lifting, but I couldn't steer w/o hitting the fenders in front. The rear were fine) If you go SOA front on a FSJ, you will get 5-6", not 4" like the CJs because the D44 axle tubes and pads are thicker than the D30 they ran. SOA lift equals original mount pad thickness, plus tube thickness, plus new mount pad thickness. You could take the '76 Blazer D44 front axle housing I have and get your tubes put into the pumpkin, so you only need to add one spring pad! I had the pics of Elmo with the 33" tires on Photopoint, but they're gone now. :^( You don't really need much tire width to go with the height, but the 33/9.5 seems too narrow and wobbly for a FSJ. Your MAP sensor will have a HUGE difference in your gas mileage with higher vacuum readings. Apparently there is an adjustable MAP out there you can switch in 3 positions. Lean for long highway trips, middle for average power or higher altitude long trips, and extra rich for those heavy pulls and hill climbs! (As soon as I can afford it, one's coming for Black Jack. I believe Hesco makes them) Just don't forget with taller tires you need lower gears, or a different trans speedo gear, and your braking power is diminished. A couple ways of boosting your brakepower are a double booster off a J20, or a GM Hydroboost which runs off the power steering (I have one, but it needs a seal kit, so I'm not sure if I'm going to use it) I also saw a Hydroboost on a '79 Lincoln that looks identical. From: Dan Black If I got a 4" lift, what tires could I put on my FSJ ('74 Wagoneer)? I'm looking (long-term) at a SOA conversion in front and a matching lift in back, which most people say ends up being around 4". I was wondering if I could put 35" tires on then. Anybody know how available wider rims are and what width I should get (rims and tires) at that diameter? Anybody have any pics of 33" or 35" tires on their FSJ or stories? In unrelated news, it looks like I finally got the TBI system I got from www.customefis.com running the way it should. Looks like I got virtually everything installed right on the first try except one little detail -- I put the MAP sensor vacuum hose on a timed vacuum port instead of manifold vacuum. (I knew it went on manifold vacuum; just messed up.) The initial results since the change (last night) are very encouraging; I'm definitely eager to see the results in mileage over the next tank (got gas last night to give me a full tank to start with). Was getting 8-10mpg; hoping for 15mpg, which would be quite a difference for such a minor physical change, but entirely possible. I'll keep y'all posted. ;) - - - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand. ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 12:48:58 -0800 (PST) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: fsj: Re: 77 wagoneer A: What do you need for it? I personally made Up a nice little flyer, about the FSJ group, with my name and e mail, and a written invite to potential members. Every time I see FSJ 's weather on the roads, doing errands, going to school, I make sure to keep a stack of Flyers in my Honcho and my Volvo every day. So far at least 5 times this year alone I banged a U turn, to track a person, or followed them, to hand them in person a flyer,( sometimes a wind shield is fine) with a warm big smile, and a friendly greeting, and ask about their FSJ and tell them about the group. Chances are they love to talk about their FSJ! And all of them have seem for the most part very interested about the group and often thank me! Two have people remarked, that it was a great idea. I figured if they did not love their FSJ by now, They would not have kept for very long. It's a love/hate thing for sure! So if they are Driving one, chances are, they love it.. Some People who drive a FSJ have said, They have never heard of a "FSJ".. "What is a .."FSJ"? ( they get it confused with a XJ).. or "Where can I get some Advice or parts about my wagoneer? Is a Cherokee a FSJ? Not many people know much about them , What Makes , and models, and who made what, and the Quadra trac is confusing for some, but they love it just the same. " I have heard that statement as well. Maybe it reminds them of a bygone era, as it always has for me when I was small boy growing up. I saw the pictures in the all the outdoor Magazines, of the Wagoneer, Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer, with the Canoe on top, and the Camping gear, always ready for the open road and adventure! It was Beautiful! The lines, the grill and real 4x4 Full time drive( at least I thought. hey I was a kid...;) I saw the Wagoneer and it's kind, as the romantic Rugged tough Outdoors type vehicle! I still do today, every time I look at those lines, and the woody sides, complete with luggage rack just waiting to take me away. It's powerful V8, always ready to take me on another adventurous journey into the wilderness where no other humans can be found for hundreds of miles. So hey .. Please get out there and promote the Group! Make friends with FSJ'S!!! Stop, Get out and wave them to come over!!!! Say hello! say.. HI! How are you ?! Start a conversation! Strangers are only friends you have not met! So get out there and DO SOMETHING about it! R.J.
