Guys, well i noticed awhile back that one of my front springs has a kink in it. its actually bent near the rear spring mount. i was hoping to replace it with a stock spring but i would have to do both front springs, matched set. i am also planning on towing with my wagon and the rear springs have a little sag in them, so i would probably need to replace both of those too. which leads me to a lift kit for the waggie. i figure if i am replacing all four springs may as well get the wagon up a little higher. this is my driver (not right now because i screwed up the ignition system). i have 31" pirellis (sp?) on it which are new and will stay for at least another 30,000 miles. i am looking for something in the 2" to 3" lift range. i doubt if this thing will ever see a rock bigger than a bowling ball so please, no soa conversion or big spring lift suggestions :) what manufacturers should i be looking at? I would like to not compromise ride but I am also looking for a good price. meaning if the softest and flexiest springs out there are also the most expensive i won't be getting those :) i guess i am compromising those two...soft ride and price. anyway any suggestions or testimonials are greatly appreciated. If I get the lift on and the sled running good I will likely wheel Ouray in the Wagoneer...I just can't break it, that's what my CJ is for :) thanks a lot guys, Dan _________________________________________________________________ Join the world^Rs largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2002 11:25:57 -0800 From: "allyoop" Subject: fsj: Tires for narrow rims Fellows, Update: I've now got a real exhaust on my '73 J4600 (with first year Quadratrac, optional lo range and last year drums), with non-leaking stock manifolds instead of the ratty headers, and Airport Welding's finest glass pack feeding through a 2 1/2" single pipe. Sounds good and, like a car wash, makes it run better too. I'm liking this rig more and more. I visited the pull-a-part yard and snagged an under car spare tire carrier from a '67 Dodge PU, which is now installed. I've decided to stick with the original 16" x 6" steel disk wheels, which are now equipped with 7.00 x 16 LT 6 ply rating nylon lug tires. I'm thinking about replacement tires that would sing less, and wonder what the list would recommend as the largest section I should fit on these relatively narrow rims. Off road clearance is not an issue -- the slippery place at the beauty bark yard is about as tough as it gets for this old veteran. All of the spring lifts I've seen for our various SJ's seem to start at 1974....why for? Does it maybe have to do with 'spring width' ? For those who've seen my recent posts, you know I've got myself a 1963 Willys Wagoneer fixer-upper.....next weekend I'm planning to install the NP-203 xfer case, and then set out to fit in a modified length drive-shaft. I thought I could save a little $$, a little effort, and a little time if I put on the lift before I put in the drive-shaft, so I was thinking about ordering me up the big 6" kit...need to keep up with those cool Ford F350 high-ups...not that it's a competition, well maybe it is. higher = cooler :) I called Rusty's today about their 6" lift that's been going around the discussions for a few days now...hoping I could use a 74 kit on my 63 ...they say no...something about that I got narrow springs? Which reminds me, Wes, you going to Ouray with us all? We're forming a convoy... :) I hadn't planned on being part of a convoy... but the company keeps getting better and I'm thinking it won't be so bad... in addition, it'll tend to keep my speed down which will do two things: increase my fuel economy, and make my wife happy. :) (she is still hasn't gotten over my five years on the Autobahn... even though that was over 20 years ago... :) This is the directions I pulled off of mapquest... basically heading to twin falls and turning south to SLC and then Ouray... http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/ouray-directions.html From Medford it might be a good idea to head down to Reno and hook up with Michael Baxter and Super Ken. Look around in Jeep parts places (junkyards) for a post-1974 Wagoneer. If you can get the spring hangers and shackles from the truck, you may just be in business. I have to admit that I have not had the opportunity to lift a pre-1974 rig...all of my FSJ rigs have been from model years 1979 to 1986. Good luck. Does it maybe have to do with 'spring width' ? I don't remember if I covered this in the lift article. The 1973 and earlier have spring mounts in different locations. It may be true that the spring width is narrower too. For best flex and ride and height, and most cost, custom springs are the way to go. They may not be as expensive as you think. There are a number of vendors. Look for National Spring in I think CA or Alcan in CO, or local spring shops, or ESPO. Do a web search too. Spring shops can rearch the springs to give you a little more height but this doesn't improve flex or droop, and it may not last. Add a leafs will give you 2" and poor ride, and probably won't last long (like putting one good battery with 2 bad ones). I thought I saw something about cross-vehicle compatibility on CFSJA just recently. The archives are on http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/cfsja and it was 1-3 weeks ago. You'll need a yahooid and will have to join the group for the time being to search thru it. Something like the same dimensions up front as a Wrangler rear leaf, and in the rear, same as... something. The spring rates would not carry over so this info would only be helpful in doing custom springs. But honestly you should probably just measure the springs as the spring shop wants you to and go from there.
