This would be a worthy acquisition, this is the last year of the FSJ Cherokee and with the Chief option will appreciate more in the years to come. john At 12:54 AM 2/23/02 -0500, fsj-digest wrote: >Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 12:00:58 EST >From: Brdshootr-at-aol.com >Subject: fsj: 83 Cherokee Chief > >Hey guys, >I found a very nice '83 Cherokee Chief for sale here in Ohio and was >wondering if you guys could give me some info. An '83 6 cyl or 360 with NP208 and (optional 4 speed or) 999/727 automatic would have hubs. If it had a NP229 or NP219, it would not. 3.31 and 2.72 are the only stock gears available after '80 on the Cheros AFAIK. If it has a 999 auto, then the factory wouldn't put in the class 3 hitch (torque converters tended to self-destruct when you pulled trailers like my 5 ton w/o the heavy duty version put in. 999 also had better gearing than 727 for take offs and got better fuel economy if it has the lockup) From: Brdshootr-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: 83 Cherokee Chief Hey guys, I found a very nice '83 Cherokee Chief for sale here in Ohio and was wondering if you guys could give me some info. (long) A: If you want to stay away from 21 splines, don't bid on pre '91 XJs! From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Message: 23 ;) reply... (long) well, curtis has been trying to get his house deal closed and been battling mortgage companies for months... I think he's going to get back to the project in a month or so. I still need to run up to Canada to get a 23 spline NP242. Although I'm bidding on some totalled cherokees at the same auction place where I picked up the '99 WJ. Only problem is I think they're all 21 spline NP231s. :( I've got an NP219 that just needs an adapter. We've got a chuck of $65 scrap aluminum alloy we can make one out of... If I go with the NP242 I'll want to do the slip yoke eliminator (SYE) and maybe the 4:1 low range... but that's $$$$ :( The SYE alone is close to 3 c notes... I have a buyer back east for the NP219, but it won't cover all the costs... so we'll see what happens. curtis will need about a month to put it all together. I've been gathering parts for years for this project. Have the entire guts out of the '96 Cherokee, except for the xfr case. I bought a totalled '96 xj on ebay, only problem is it had the 5spd/np231... so I found a '96 Aisin Warner tranny up in BC. Should have bought the xfr case at the same time... was trying to avoid the SYE project... oh well... it's nice up there, not far from Eddie Pedersen's place... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 16:56:24 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: the 83 Cherokee Chief At 07:46 PM 2/23/02 -0500, Brdshootr wrote: >In a message dated 2/23/2002 1:01:14 AM Eastern Standard Time, >john-at-wagoneers.com writes: >John thanks for the reply. > >>yes, they came stock with 258's/np208 and hubs... >>think the 4spd was std... but since you have the at it >>was upgraded. >> >>3.31 is the optional gear ratio (2.72 std), unless >>you have the 258/tf727. >> >>if you have the v8, the 3.31's were the option. > >Yes, it has the V8 with auto trans. If it has hubs it's the NP208. The NP229 was more often found on the upscale Wagoneers. The Cherokees came with less... If you see hubs on a Selectrac NP228/229 run the other way... :) (well, it's a clear sign that whoever had it didn't understand what the Selectrac was, and that if 4wd is engaged with the hubs disengaged you'll blow the viscous coupler in the 229. The 228 I believe is differentiated so it's only issue is you wouldn't go anywhere... :) If it has hubs it has the NP208, an excellent xfr case. Probably called Command-trac, at least that's what Jeep called the part time systems from '84 and on... and I've seen that referenced earlier as well... >>how much? > >He started asking 7500, but we eventually settled on 5000, if I can scrape >it together. I think there was one up here for sale that went for about the same. The Edelbrock performer manifold and carb is a nice setup, very smooth... Someone in Europe offered me $7,500 for my '83 J10 Stepside... with a bad engine... an appraiser looking at my totalled '88 xj wagoneer limited looked at my '83 J10 and said when it's done with all I have planned it'll be worth over $13,000.
