(I have to figure how to upload my pics from my digital camera to the computer. It looks like the same piece to me. From: "Whit Hickman" Subject: fsj: Tailgate Part I broke the tab on my truckbed where the tailgate latches on. It's just a little piece of metal about 1" x 2" with a square hole cut into it. Anyone have suggestions on where I can get this piece. I haven't bothered checking the dealer. I assume they won't have it because it is a weld on piece to the truck bed. I guess I could go to the junk yard and grind it off an old truck. I could fabricate it as well but it looks like a lot of effort for a simple piece. Will the {- weight of a full 40gal reserve really make a huge mileage difference over {- that of say a 20gal or 30gal? I doubt it would make much difference at constant highway/interstate speeds, with minimal acceleration and deceleration. It's the whole momentum thing. In town, with lots of stop-n-go, it probably would make a little more difference, but even then, think: 40gal * 7lbs/gal = 280lbs, equivalent of one large adult or two small adults. So how much do extra passengers hurt your mileage? Probably not _too_ much. Technically, this is behind both axles rather than between, so that would hurt a bit more, and might hurt handling a bit (or possibly help a bit in the snow) -- might just have to experiment and see what it's like overall. But meanwhile, also remember that you don't _have_ to fill it up all the way every time. My guess is that I'd (a) fill it up all the way on long highway trips but usually only put in 20-30gal at a time in town, or (b) if it didn't affect mileage much in town, keep it full when it's cheap and try to hold out longer when it pops up, say, $0.12 in a couple days, like this past week... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It IS as bad as you think, and they ARE out to get you. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 18:03:28 -0500 From: mpolkkidodge-at-netscape.net Subject: fsj: anyone seen a Factory Front Winch 1970? http://home.earthlink.net/~charliethompson/winch.jpg - -- __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. If you divided Colorado into four equal sections, Ouray would fall in the lower left quadrant but up high towards the center of the four section intersection. It is absolutely beautiful there, with many offroad exploration opportunities. I've been there four wheeling both in the summer and in the winter. Winter was a little tough. Yet, I aired down my tires and ended up riding on the top crust, was kinda weird. From what I saw of the locals though, skinny highly aggressive tires are the norm. Almost all of the trails are easy. Any stock Jeep or SUV can do almost every trail in the area without risk of body damage (accept Black Bear Pass). Scenic beauty is off the scale, and that's why we go back. This is an excellent area for anyone who is not into hard-core wheelin. You can literally drive on about a hundred miles of trails, and take trips to Lake City, Silverton and Telluride without ever leaving the trail. Tons of history with several well preserved ghost towns and mines. High altitude trails that may not be open before late June /Early July. This area is best in mid-September when the Aspens are changing. I recommend staying at the Best Western at the south edge of town. The natural hot springs pools are perfect after a long trail ride. Check it out next fall. Here's an update on my 63 fixer-upper for those who've been following the saga... I have not done much work on the old thing for a couple of weeks...did more research than actual work. Was also waiting for my brother to come around to help with the heavy lifting required to get the xfer case bolted up. It wasn't easy, but the NP-203 xfer case is finally in. Narrowly cleared the frame rail, gas tank, and floor. Very close clearances on all three. The 3" body lift gave me just enough room to fit under the floor, but I may need to cut a hole in floor to access fluid-filler-hole in xfer case. here are the questions: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Now that my GM motor/trans/xfer are all in there, I turned my attention to the driveshaft that was behind the original 230 Tornado...it's 10 inches too long to be able to go back in. Not sure about the front one yet, because it hits the exhaust header. I need at least one shorter headers. - --ANy free advice on running non-matched headers? i.e. yes it's safe, or it'll damage a motor? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I've decided to go ahead and get custom springs, and I'll probably get them from Alcan. I can get 8" for under $1000. - --ANy free advice for-or-against a big 8" lift? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I'm thinking I'll re-check drive shaft fittment after I get springs in it. - --ANy ideas on what are my chances that a shaft 10" too long will be just right with 8" taller springs? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- It takes 3 weeks for the springs to get built, so in the mean time, I'll probably try to swap in a bigger master cylinder and a pwr assist for the brakes...any advice for that project? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-= Thanks again everyone, jeff This electronic message transmission, including any attachments, contains information from Prescription Solutions which may be confidential or privileged.
