Here's an update on my 63 fixer-upper for those who've been following the saga... I have not done much work on the old thing for a couple of weeks...did more research than actual work. Was also waiting for my brother to come around to help with the heavy lifting required to get the xfer case bolted up. It wasn't easy, but the NP-203 xfer case is finally in. Narrowly cleared the frame rail, gas tank, and floor. Very close clearances on all three. The 3" body lift gave me just enough room to fit under the floor, but I may need to cut a hole in floor to access fluid-filler-hole in xfer case. here are the questions: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Now that my GM motor/trans/xfer are all in there, I turned my attention to the driveshaft that was behind the original 230 Tornado...it's 10 inches too long to be able to go back in. Not sure about the front one yet, because it hits the exhaust header. I need at least one shorter headers. - - --ANy free advice on running non-matched headers? i.e. yes it's safe, or it'll damage a motor? A: Won't hurt anything (I ran 1 header and 1 stock exhaust manifold for over a year. Made the motor lope a little more) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I've decided to go ahead and get custom springs, and I'll probably get them from Alcan. I can get 8" for under $1000. - - --ANy free advice for-or-against a big 8" lift? A: The bigger the better, the tighter... err, the garage roof clearance! I would consider wider axles to stave off rollovers. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I'm thinking I'll re-check drive shaft fittment after I get springs in it. - - --ANy ideas on what are my chances that a shaft 10" too long will be just right with 8" taller springs? A: Slim to none! Now if it was a 8" too long and 10" lift, it would be about right! (you can use the pythagorean theorem to guesstimate the length. Measure the distance now, and measure the distance to 10" below that. Square both, add together and divide by 2. That should roughly be the length of the shaft you'll need (unless I'm too tired and messed up my math) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- It takes 3 weeks for the springs to get built, so in the mean time, I'll probably try to swap in a bigger master cylinder and a pwr assist for the brakes...any advice for that project? A: I suggest the double booster from a J20 truck. Or hydroboost from a GM diesel pickup or car. The master depends on front disc or drums. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-= Thanks again everyone, jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2002 00:06:29 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: '81 J10 axles and springs A: Probably tomorrow or friday I will have both axles out of Black Jack. 2.72 ratio open carrier (AFAIK) Model 20 rear complete, drum to drum $200. Dana 44 front, same ratio, $200 or will take part trade on your old front diff (I only need a good housing and axle shafts with LH drop for my SOA buildup. I have high mount Chev hubs already) complete except front brakes (I have zero miles on the carbon metallics) I will be pulling the springs as well so I can put in my custom built ones. I think they are Rough Country pack in the front with AAL in the rear because the shocks are Rough Country. I'm open to offers on them. (you can see the height difference between them and John's stock rig on http://www.wagoneers.com by searching for Blackie with google.) I have the truck heavily loaded right now, and the springs are just flat. I called Moser axles up, and it looks like the D60-2 new shafts with bearings will set me back -at- $400 plus the diff for $100. Add to that the transfercase and other goodies I want, and I have to come up with -at- $1500 in a hurry! Is there any interest out there? Well, it sounds like my sister and brother-in-law are probably going out with me, and they'll probably be driving her '93 (or '95 or something) GChero. (Unless we use a trailer, I doubt the '74 would be too great on the interstate -- low gears and bad mileage. There definitely won't be fuel injection on it yet.) Anyway, might figure out where you had in mind, but generally I think we're the drive-straight-through types. Taking similar routes and trading cell numbers could be a good idea, though -- more options if somebody runs into car trouble. We're in central Iowa (Ames -- ~30mi north of Des Moines), so I usually take I-80 across Nebraska until I-76 to Denver. Then we may take a southern route from Denver to hit relatives along the way, else take I-70 from Denver as Mapquest suggests (correctly, I believe, for the shortest route). As it approaches, should we join the CFSJA list? - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My doctor diagnosed me with a disease called Hypochondria, but these sugar pills he gave me should keep it under control. -- J. Hi all - I'm new to the list. I live in Colorado where I camp whenever I can. I do mostly 4wd/vehicle camping in undeveloped areas - though I would like to get into more backcountry type camping in the future. I don't like campgrounds all that much, but can tolerate them when I need to if there's not too many RV's (I know this is a tent group, but nothing personal to the easily offended anyway) and the sites are nicely spaced so I don't have to be subject to overhearing every conversation at the site next door. Anyway, I will be heading to the Seattle / Vancouver area for a two week (mostly) camping vacation in June. I'm having a hard time finding a campground that I feel confident I will like enough to commit to a reservation. I understand from guides that there are places (especially in the islands) that you just must have a reservation for, but most don't give much info on the campgrounds other than how many sites there are and how much they cost. So, if anyone out there has been to a campground or two in that area that you particularly liked, please letnbspknow! We (just my husband and I) plan to camp a few days on Vancouver Island, some other island in the San Junbsp and possibly on the east side of the Olympic Penninsula. THANKS! Try FREE Yahoo! If you divided Colorado into four equal sections, Ouray would fall in the lower left quadrant but up high towards the center of the four section intersection. It is absolutely beautiful there, with many offroad exploration opportunities. I've been there four wheeling both in the summer and in the winter. Winter was a little tough. Yet, I aired down my tires and ended up riding on the top crust, was kinda weird. From what I saw of the locals though, skinny highly aggressive tires are the norm. Almost all of the trails are easy. Any stock Jeep or SUV can do almost every trail in the area without risk of body damage (accept Black Bear Pass). Scenic beauty is off the scale, and that's why we go back. This is an excellent area for anyone who is not into hard-core wheelin. You can literally drive on about a hundred miles of trails, and take trips to Lake City, Silverton and Telluride without ever leaving the trail. Tons of history with several well preserved ghost towns and mines. High altitude trails that may not be open before late June /Early July. This area is best in mid-September when the Aspens are changing. I recommend staying at the Best Western at the south edge of town. The natural hot springs pools are perfect after a long trail ride. Check it out next fall. My '88 (the good one, with the fuel injection) just died, and it may be as serious as a toasted engine... Not directly because of the fuel injection, though possibly because I didn't have the fuel injection quite right at first and it was running rich for a long time -- may have been the cause of getting gas in the oil, which is what we think caused the problem that peaked today. (I can tell the whole story if anybody's interested, but that's the main bit.) Anyway, I was thinking if it _does_ need a new engine, might as well try to put a 401 in it, but may need one (dead or alive) for a core. What needs to be replaced along with a swap up to a 401? Flywheel, IIRC... Anything else? Will it bolt onto my stock TF727? (99.75% sure the engine mounts are the same; it's the same block...) Hope I can get it fixed in plenty of time for Ouray... Heck, I hope it'll be done in less than a month, even if it needs a new block. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When ransacking a town, always remember: Pillage first and *then* burn, not the other way around. -- David Henry - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1582 **************************
