I need the gears, but I'll be flogging off the extras if anyone is interested. It looks like it has about a 6" deep spacer between the bellhousing and trans. (pretty strange. I thought only the 6 cyls had that). I don't want to play with it much myself as it is GREEN! The box is okay, and frame looks okay, but the RH motor mount rubber was broken. The cab is definitely bent on the pasenger's side as the door can't close. I'll probably pull the 6" lift off it for black Jack and sell my others. (it has 35" Wildcat tires on it and 4.09 D44s) From: Dan Black Hey, was there somebody recently who said they knew of a 401 available, possibly needing a rebuild or something? My '88 (the good one, with the fuel injection) just died, and it may be as serious as a toasted engine... Not directly because of the fuel injection, though possibly because I didn't have the fuel injection quite right at first and it was running rich for a long time -- may have been the cause of getting gas in the oil, which is what we think caused the problem that peaked today. (I can tell the whole story if anybody's interested, but that's the main bit.) Anyway, I was thinking if it _does_ need a new engine, might as well try to put a 401 in it, but may need one (dead or alive) for a core. What needs to be replaced along with a swap up to a 401? Flywheel, IIRC... Anything else? Will it bolt onto my stock TF727? (99.75% sure the engine mounts are the same; it's the same block...) Hope I can get it fixed in plenty of time for Ouray... Heck, I hope it'll be done in less than a month, even if it needs a new block. ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ Black Jack's before pic: http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/FESTS/Snohomish-April2-2000/PIC00004.JPG************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 11:50:21 -0800 (PST) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: fsj: Re: 401 A: Oops! Get this -- the oil filter fell off! I changed the oil Tuesday because pressure was too low, and we theorized it got a bit of gas mixed in. I've been running synthetic since I got it, and it had only been 1500mi since my last change, so this was changing it pretty early, but it had been running rich since I had one thing hooked up wrong on the fuel injection (MAP sensor, specifically). When it stopped this morning (after clicking a bit when I started it and gradually getting worse, eventually losing all oil pressure), I looked for an oil trail, but there wasn't any, and the dipstick looked like there was still plenty of oil in it. (Now I'm not completely sure it actually did, but I still think it did -- just in the bottom, not getting circulated.) And the engine temp never went up abnormally (but it was 20-25deg out), and never saw any smoke or smelled any oil or anything burning. They said when they towed it in, it dumped oil all over the place, and when they got it in, it only had 1qt left. However, they didn't say if they started it to maneuver it for the towing, and it was probably a car hauler, so they probably tilted it quite a bit as they winched it on and off the bed -- that'd certainly dump stuff if there's no filter there. As for the oil change, I'm still sure I didn't do anything really wrong. It MIGHT not have been tight enough, but it was roughly as tight as I normally do it (and I always change my own oil, so I've done it plenty). I didn't crank it on or anything, but I'll probably do it a bit tighter in the future and just figure on taking more effort to get it off again next oil change. I'm also absolutely sure I lubed the gasket before putting the filter on -- I remember doing that specifically, and I have NEVER forgotten to do that. After starting it that night (Tues), I watched under the vehicle for at least 2min to make sure there were no drips, then drove it about half a mile, and no problems, no leaks. Drove it all yesterday (Wed) with no noise, good oil pressure, and no problems. And then it just happened today... So it probably just wasn't on tight enough -- that's really the only possibility -- but it was obviously tight enough to work for a full day (probably an hour total and about 30mi) with no problems. Meanwhile, I haven't picked it up yet, but he said he drove it basically around five miles and there was no clicking and it felt pretty good. I guess time will tell if there was any permanent damage (it's either that or tear the engine apart to take a look), but sounds positive so far. And it's impossible to tell for sure, but using synthetic oil may have helped prevent serious damage. I'm also finding out how much it will cost to get 3.31 gears (or something in that range) put in -- I have the 2.72s now. I may well try to get that done before Ouray. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You weren't listening. -- Brantley Foster - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Mar 2002 17:06:47 -0600 From: "R.J.
