So the engine and transmission out of it are for sale. The engine is a complete (air cleaner to flywheel) 258 with all the smog stuff on it. It passes GA emissions test. $350.00 Transmission is a T-176 4-speed in great condition - $400.00. They are still in the Jeep so you can check them out. Will remove them when sold. Would trade either one for a set of 4" YJ springs. OR Make offer on all of it. Cal Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ADVERTISEMENT Visit our club website at http://www.southernjeeps.org Your use of Yahoo! If it was me, and I was in love with that 5 bolt pattern, I would grab Ford pickup 4x4 1/2 ton axles to put under it. Just watch what drop they are! (hmm... Ford D44 spindles should bolt onto the '76 Blazer D44 front axle I'm selling w/o spindles, then you would have the correct drop and bolt pattern with disc front brakes!) I've not heard of anyone putting discs on a Dana 27. There is a disc kit available for CJ open knuckle Dana 30s that you might be able to modify to work -- if you'd feel safe with CJ brakes. The best answer is to swap to a later model Dana 44 that already has discs. One thing to bear in mind is that as a general Jeep rule, disc brakes are gonna come with 6 lug bolts rather than your current 5 lug pattern. Unless you swap both axles for 3/4 ton, 8 bolt hardware, you're gonna have to decide whether you want to modify the front to match your 5 bolt rear or the rear to match your 6 bolt front. I've done the research on swapping the front 6-bolt pattern to 5-bolt, but haven't actually done it. If you decide to go that way I can help you with the details. I think both Warn and Stainless Steel Brakes have Dana 44 rear disc conversion kits. I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but you asked -- sorta. Based on the lift and other mods you've made it sounds like your building a big-tired off-road beast. Over the years the consensus of the lists has been that the Dana 27 and Dana 30 just aren't up to that kind of punishment. If you don't want your axles to be the weak link, upgradeing to 3/4 ton axles will probably be in order. Your 8" lift and big tires are going to significantly raise the center of gravity on what is already a proportionally narrow vehicle. If you got wider, 3/4 ton axles it would help offset the rollover potential. 'Course then you'd have to figure out how to mount flares to cover those rear tires so you're not getting pulled over every couple of miles. If it was my truck I'd keep the Dana 27, tune up it's drum brakes, and settle for a little less lift/tire. The drums will stop pretty well when they're working right. You just can't get away with riding them all the time like you can with discs. The combination of closed knuckles and drum brakes is hard to beat in the mud. If you're serious about building an off-road monster, then you need to get hooked up with SuperKen and let him tell you what he's learned building his '67 Super Wagoneer. I don't know if he's still on any of the FSJ lists anymore or not, but I heard he's planning to be in Ouray. Maybe someone reading this will know how to get in touch with him. There's the standard pre-flight check... In other words, before you go, check all the U-joints, engine mounts, maybe make sure it's been oiled and greased recently, good battery with plenty of distilled water, etc. You might end up adjusting the carb a bit if you know how, but all I know is that if you adjust it, you'll probably end up leaning it out a bit; I'm not an expert on that. I've heard you can get adjustable jets for the carbs fairly cheap which let you adjust for elevation quicker and easier and more effectively, but I don't have any personal experience with them. Might make sure you bring a can or two of carb starter stuff. And it might just take some patience at some elevations: I noticed with I think both the old '84 I had and my current '88 (both 360s -- and counting the '88 only when it was still the stock 2bbl carb) that, coming from Iowa (~1000'), they did a lot of wheezing around south Denver, through Colorado Springs, and pretty much til around Canon City, which meant roughly in the 6000-7000' range. The '88 died completely a couple times and had to wait several minutes for it to dry up. But once I made it past there, above 7000' (even went above 10000' with the '84 on trails once), they basically didn't sputter or complain a bit. Power was almost what it was here in Iowa, and I didn't have the slightest problem starting them in the morning. (My dad always used to flood an '85 Ford van, V8/351/4bbbl, each morning at 8000', then wait 10-20min, and it would be ok the rest of the day. No such problems with my GWags after 7000' or so.) Ouray is ~7800', so same general elevation. So even if your FSJs have trouble around 6000-7000', and even if they die once or twice (allow extra time), I'd try to make it to Ouray before making any adjustments -- they may be unnecessary. (I'm just hoping my fuel injection will do better -- and hopefully I'll know before then since I'm planning two Colorado trips before the Invasion.) BTW, I just happened on this on the web: http://www.ouraylodging.com/ If the motels are charging $100/night, this looks like a nice inn for the same price! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1587 **************************
