She mentioned the evil "minivan" word. I told her that would not happen! So my quest for something with three rows of seats began. I went to visit my friendly, neighborhood Dodge Dealer. I really like the looks of the Durango, and it has three rows of seats. Then I found that Dodge believes that tall people are only 6'. So at almost 6.5' there was not a single seat that I found comfortable in this truck. If I was not hitting my head, I was hitting my legs. As the great depression set in that I would not be able to have a truck that would wear a Pentastar, I swallowed my pride, and went down the street to a Ford Store. I owned one once; and found it to be more reliable, and easier to service then my buddies, garbage motors rides of the time. I took home two possible candidates to show Lady Susan. One was the Expedition, and the other was the Excursion. I liked the Excursion; but Lady Susan said it was to big. The Expedition turned out to only be like an inch or two longer then the USS GW, and a lot taller. So my quest has begun to find a 99 or newer top of the line Expedition, or its counterpart the Lincoln Navigator. What I am wondering is, how does the Ford 4 wheel drive work? I have seen that they must have several different styles of systems, since some trucks have a 3 position 4 wheel drive control, while others have a 4 position control switch. I am looking for a system comparable to out Select Track units, which allow us to run 4 wheel hi on dry pavement. Does ford have a comparable system? My next question is about these darned antilock brakes. I know on the XJ's if we pull the computer for the brake system that the brakes will work like regular brakes. A: I thought '71 was the only year the 232 was available? (304 would have made an adequate power plant for the soccer moms rig) I parked Elmo in some seemingly small spaces (usually the one right next to the right wall of the parkade at the hospital. After I found that one was almost always available, I'd beeline straight to it. Only time I couldn't get in was when an Excursion crowded the spot (I complained to the attendants and they doubled his parking fee for taking 2 spaces, then they found out he was parking there daily and taking a bus the rest of the way to work which wrong as it was posted as "hospital parking only". VMH was having their main lot overhauled at the time due to the earthquake and couldn't afford to let bozos like him park there when they were so short on space for patients) I'm converting the 5 lug axle I'm getting to 6 lug (Dana 60-2 for strength because I plan to tow a 5th wheel in the near future) I will be keeping the rear drums though. Not sure what size drums the D60 rear has but I'll be keeping them on the back! I wrote Stant customer support about the cap and should hear back tomorrow about it. owner-fsj-digest-at-digest.net writes: 71 to 73 are another group... AMC v8's, closed knuckle front axle, no disc. 5 lug. these are the least desirable bunch, sorry Ben... From: Brazzadog-at-aol.com LOL. To tell you the truth, I used to feel the same way. IMO, the '73's have the worst traits of both Kaiser and AMC rigs. I can't say I'd prefer a '71 or '72 to a '78, but it's about a wash for me. In '71 the 258 was an option, and most people wouldn't hold the 360 against a FSJ. The 304 is another story altogether. The Dana 30 front axle is plenty stout for my needs and the closed knuckles can be rebuilt with nothing fancier than a .5" drive ratchet and a fisherman's spring-scale. The turning radius is not stellar, but an open knuckle axle wouldn't help me get into those "compact car" parking places anyway. The 5 lug wheels are a bonus for me. I can swap wheels/tires back and forth between the Wagoneer and the Bronco anytime it suits me. The drum brakes would be a non-issue if I weren't too lazy to put new self-adjusters in the front. But, I don't mind tightening them a few clicks every 10 days or so. It's not like I'm ever gonna have bad weather for the 90 seconds I'm on my back in the driveway : ) The only time I notice a lack of stopping power with my drum brakes is when I drive like a moron. I try not to do that anyway, so if it kills me... good riddance of bad rubbish. That said, anybody got a mint '78 1-ton J-truck just laying around gathering dust? (or mold, depending on where you live) You know what the worst problem is with a '71 Wagoneer? From: Chris Madden Subject: More Jeeps for sale... Hey All, Well, with a heavy heart, I'm putting two J-trucks of mine up for sale... I've fallen into the "too many projects, not enough time/$$$ to go around" trap. So, One 1969 J-2000 and One 1962 J-300 must find a new home. They both run and drive fine. The '69 needs new rear brake cylinders, I bought them, but haven't put 'em on, and needs new rear drums. Has some rust, mainly a little at the cab corners and where the bed meets the bed side. Rockers need to be replaced. Has the Buick 350 and T-15 trany, D 20 T-case. The '62 is in better shape minor rust, has a hole in the drivers side rocker panel, a few pinhole to pencil hole sized rust thru spots where the bed meets the bed side. Hydraulic clutch master cylinder needs to be rebuilt. 230 tornado engine has maybe 4000 miles on a full rebuild, 3 speed trany, was on the tree, PO put in a hurst floor shifter, D 20 T-case with PTO. Drive train has been rebuilt several times. Both in the Pittsburgh, Pa area. Make me a reasonable offer, I don't want to send 'em to the Yard of Doom. - -- Chris M. My server is down so I am using my laptop. Thanks, Jim Sterling Hello everyone, Here are the parts I currently have for sale: 1980 J-10 AMC Model 20 Rear end. I will figure out what gears if it matters, but this is out of a 6 cyl truck so I think it is 3:31. J-truck/Cherokee front fenders with flares for widetrack. These will also fit a wagonner. 3.5 inch lift front springs and all 4 shocks from Rough Country. Fits 76 and later FSJ. This kit came with rear blocks, but I did not take the blocks off the Cherokee when it was hauled away. This kit has only 8 miles on it. I put it on the Cherokee, but then took everything off the cherokee and am putting it on the J10. Also going with a taller lift. All parts MAKE OFFER. This needs to go so that I can have room to get the J10 together before Ouray.
