And since my focus in recent > years has been limited to things built by Benz or Jeep I'm basically > clueless as to what is out there... > > suggestions, recommendations, caveats? I think you're looking in the same realm I am. There aren't any acceptable solutions out there, so one will have to be built. I have something oddball that's built that I need to fix, but it's sooooo oddball it'll take me a while to get it going. What I've landed on until I get it working is an 83 spirit with 2.53 axle, T-5, and 258, but the carb is really annoying me. I'm getting about 18 mpg right now with a shot carb and stock timing, both of which will be fixed when I can get to a junkyard and get a new carb (it's sooo lean right now if I touch the timing it'll ping). You might consider finding something that is a gasser, but gets decent mileage. I know, they're hard to find, but they're out there. Something without a v8 and full time four is probably a good start ;) Something else you may consider being so close to canada is a turbo diesel land cruiser (think FJ60 but factory diesel). They were never imported to the states, but they were imported to canada, and there's an EPA/IRS/DOT exception on file for them, so bringing them across the border is relatively painless (translation: the feds supply the vaseline). They wheel decently, little longer WB than an SJ (IIRC), but the frame-ground clearance is pretty bad. Upside is you can stuff 31's or 32's under them stock, depending on four corner leaf sag :) There were non turbos (mostly), some were five bangers, some six. I have some limited info on this stuff, was thinking of going this route, but since I'm so far south, it'll be easier to find an SJ and stuff a diesel in it than go to canada and get a cruiser. They like to rust up like most pre-plastic toyotas, so watch out there if you do go this route.
