From: brien m tourville Subject: ~VAM 282cu.in Redline / Blackline - Yikes!~ A note I recieved from a former VAM Engineer - - I'd wager if we made AutoZone an offer - they'd sell these 282s' by the Ton for Cheap! -.- b.t. Hi Brien: Greetings, hello. Uhm... redline 282... One question asaulted... U know what concoction resumes in that engine? This powerplant resulted frm the energy crisis that sent the gas price up to the skies in Mexico. In those days the only available fuel, very scarce, was a poor 69 octane gasoline using as antidetonant asphalt. Yes. Tetraethyl was an expensive import that was ingeniously replaced with that black pavement gooey. In the early 80s, EPA equiped cars in USA with catalityc converters. Gringos visiting Mexico in the epoch, used our fuel and damaged inmediatly their early attempts fr a clean air act. The redline was a larger diameter than stroque engine that produced larger torque output than a W351CID frm Ford at that time. Horsepower was rather mediocre. Torque was important. Using hollow cup low pistons and an extremely low compression combustion chamber, U could mix the allready poor gasoline with one third kerosene, and the engine would not know the diference. Problem with that engine was a very lousily ported head. Porting fr exhaust fr instance, baked continuosly exhaust valve guides to seizing point. Burned valve was then a continuous problem that gained the engine the nickname of 44the red suppository44 because when U went after a mechanic to fix the unending string of overheating ocurrences, unvariably the nutlooser would say 44hey... why dont U stick it up ur a....44 Yeah, asides there was a change of attitude in Mexico. This was the first time an engine was metaphorized to such an inserting level, yes. As U see, this problem was never fixed on the redline and it was until VAM released the blackline, equiped with a plastic rocker arms cover to proove this engine would never melt it, that VAM superficially improoved the design never eliminating completely the overheating tendencies. At same time, all peripherals of the redline, such as the shitty Prestolite point and condenser distribuitor and the incredibly poor Holley one barrelled piece of thurd, were replaced with the elegant Prestolite Hall type Electronic Ignition and the two barrelled Motorcraft carburator now standard on the blackliners. Almost forgot to tell U: two of my friends asides myself, desperated with their melting hot redlines, decided to place nice 50 gallon drums with auxiliary hoses connected to the cooling systems, in order to increase their range without risk of valve burnout. Thanks God, all is now history and past nightmare. Har. This sounds like they're giving away previously made reservations. I made my reservations a month or so ago. How, exactly, do you "finalize" a reservation? I'm wondering if there is something about the whole "reservation" concept that I don't understand. I should have been more descriptive.
