What do they test for in IL? NOx are reduced (main bad component of acid rain) with the EGR and also engine ping is conquered by reintroducing the exhaust gas and lowering combustion temps. (I had the one on Black Jack hooked to an electric solenoid so I only used it when the motor pinged due to crappy gas) As for the cat, I'd go non-aerobic high flow (BTW, those who complained about their high flow burning out in a hurry, did you have the AIR system intact? I read today that will cause the premature burnout!) Cap off the AIR system or get the earlier manifolds w/o the ports (not too early though! '73 and later) From: "Terrill, Patrick" Subject: fsj: RE: Rez is drooling The purpose of the EGR system is to lower the combustion chamber temperature and thus lower the NOx emissions. (eg - the higher the temp the more NOx is produced) As long as Illinois is using a no load emissions test and doesn't care about a missing EGR, it doesn't really matter whether you have it or not, unless you care about the extra pollution you may be putting into the environment. However, if Illinois, like many other states, goes to California's more stringent emissions testing, you'll have to have the EGR system installed. As for my opinion, a properly working EGR system doesn't effect the overall power and performance of an engine, so I'd go ahead and leave it on. But do note the words "properly working". An improperly fitted or incorrect EGR valve can cause an off idle stumble on many engines. Pretty decent looking too and came with a new oil pump assembly and all the gaskets (felpro). Now I just need to collect the other parts I want to put on the engine plus strip my spare and ship it back for my core deposit! Is it necessary to keep the EGR system? I'm wanting to get a manifold that doesn't have EGR but not sure if this is going to cause problems. My '81 Wag has EGR on it now. I'd like to eliminate much of the emission controls except I do have to keep the catalytic converter to pass emissions in Illinois. Does the EGR really add that much to emission control? Am I going to regret using a non-EGR manifold? - - --Vince '81 Wagoneer '99 TJ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 23:22:51 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: XJ tank for Blackie A: I wanted simplicity of the in-tank fuel pump for the EFI and I have them here already! (saves buying another electric fuel pump) I pulled my J10 tank awhile ago (It's at Frank's place in TX now thanks to UPS) but the skid still hangs there. It's just a stock 18 gallon and it's only temporary till I get my LPG functioning (I have to test the wiring conversion from the '89 XJ somehow) I have the parts MJ's tank as well that looks like it will fit where the original tank was (I'll find out in a day or two) I have a skidplate from the XJ to put around the new tank as well. Once the 4.0L is fired up, the tanks will come out again (at least one will. I'm not too sure about LPG availability in Ouray) From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: XJ tank for Blackie Great job, Jim. How many gallons is the XJ tank? Why do you prefer it to the SJ tank? Is this a good mod in general for the pickups? I'm sure you tried a screwdriver under the head of the skidplate bolt, we've all been there.... - - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 May 2002 20:32:44 -0400 From: "Joe H Lawrence" Subject: fsj: How to ship a pickup bed????? HELP!!!! Depending on how far west in Kentucky, it'd be a one day trip there and the next day back... sounds like a Memorial Day weekend trip to me... Does the seller know a kid in Kentucky with a pickup & trailer or a flatbed and the urge for a roadtrip? Give the kid something for making the run and tickets to a local club with some garage band... or a handfull of Wendys gift certificates... know any motel managers you can get a discounted room for him for the overnight?... something like that would maybe be cheap for you and fun for the runner... Heck I used to drive further for less.... I once picked up a squid in Virginia heading for Indiana after a MedCruise and finally got there via DC, Buffalo and Toronto! My office pays 0.36 per mile when I run in my truck. That pays gas x2 just about, so it makes it worth it to me to drive my Wag rather than a rental, especially since I gripe about driving anything else... Maybe you can find somebody that would make the trip for just the mileage...
