Evans: http://129.186.79.84/Mt.%20Evans%20-%20temp/critters/DSCN3396.JPG http://129.186.79.84/Mt.%20Evans%20-%20temp/critters/DSCN3397.JPG There were goats on the road, which isn't that unusual, but these are especially funny because of the other Jeep and where the goats are. Obviously, I pulled up slowly and then stopped, and then the goats walked around the front of the vehicle, but the pics look like I hit one or am about to (if the vehicle had still been in motion). Would've been even funnier if I had gotten a pic a split second before the last one; the goat directly in front of me actually peeked above the hood, so you could just see his eyes above hood level. It was hilarious... And I thought it was especially appropriate to have the sure-footed mountain goats and another Jeep (a newer Grand Cherokee) all in the picture taken from a GWag -- even got my hood ornament with the "Jeep" logo. If it weren't for the Ford Exploder behind the other Jeep (which could easily be edited out...), the pics would be perfect. :) You're welcome to browse more in both the "critters" directory and the entire "Mt. Evans - temp" directory. It's labeled "temp" because I intend to eventually edit the pics -- adjust color, save with better compression, give them descriptive names, make a description file, and weed out similar shots. Most of the ones in the "view" and "Summit Lake" directories are taken as pieces with the intent of trying out some graphic stitching software to make them into huge pics. And when I do the editing, I'll rename the best ones and throw out the extras. Another of my favorites is http://129.186.79.84/Mt.%20Evans%20-%20temp/parking%20lot/DSCN3316.JPG because it's a good full view of the Mt. Evans parking lot -- with the '88 in it. (That's the top of the highest paved road in North America; the parking lot is around 14,150'.) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've got a dirty thumb. -- Prince John - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 May 2002 11:35:50 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: Re: Now parting '75 Jeep J10!!!! Baynum" Subject: fsj: Ouray Mission control we have a problem!!!.. Well it all it all started back when it my 80 J-10 Honcho was burning 8 mpg , instead of 10, and then started dieseling when you shut it off. Then when I was loaded, with trailer and equipment ( lawn tractors), on I565, it had a hard time trying to go and keep 65 mph, when the speed is limit is 70 mph, it starts to get warm, I could start to smell oil burning.. I think .. oh-oh.. So I slow down to the side, at 50 mph.. which brings the temp down ( I am thinking at this point the gears ( 4.09 )is the problem.. the RPM is too high. ) So any way, I get off the Freeway, make sure to take it easy.. I get home, And mine best friend Kevin is also there( and my mechanic) I am told him what was going on .. he said , did you know you have Smoke coming off your bed of the truck? I look over and indeed that was the case, some grass clippings had caught fire, plus smoke was coming up from between the cab and the bed. It was running really rough! So .. He gets under to look, and sees the Catalytic converter, glowing a really bright orange! (pretty..) so we think oh great. a clogged Cat!, well it could be because the Air pump, has been broken down, for the last 6 months?.. well since here in Alabama, there is no Emissions.. Yeah!, We can just get a straight pipe, and hook it on.. so we race off to Worth Exhaust, made it in the nick of time at closing, ( only to get the wrong size pipe, we got 2 1/4 , we needed 2 1/2 ") The guy there made a good point ( He been working there for years and is really good) He said, you have only had that High flow Cat convertor a year, and in fact, we put it on for you , only because by law, we have to.. But You might want to see if something is dumping Raw Gasoline down the Intake, that may o caused this to happen prematurely. So we get back borrowed a electric Saws all from a neighbor, take off the Cat , and guess what?, you can see right through it!. We start it up thinking great.. It is really loud, and it is really jumping and running rough Something is seriously wrong besides the Cat! So now we are thinking.. Gas.. carburetor..? So we start looking at the fuel mixture.. turns out , one side ( the left ) was out three turns, and the other side was out, only one turn ! So we adjust them to 2 1/14, turns, adjust timing.. still running rough! but then Kevin notices the the coil wire, it not the right wire for it, it is a old spark plug wire that is loose, it burned the cap, and beat and burned the rotor.. ( I had went to Precision Tune to see about a quick tune up, the kid there, saw the my coil wire, was fried at one end, and pointed that out, and must have stuck it there, but He did not charge me! It ran much better after that.. not for long though..) So off to the Auto Zone where once again, I almost got a speeding ticket, we made it ,on the dot, in the nick of time, right before they closed, to get a cap, rotor and coil wire that would fit right. So we installed that.. Think that would do it? Nope.. It ran rough, sputtering, and still could not get it to smooth out were we knew what it sounded like only a few months prior.. After a call to Jim Blair, Thanks Jim! You always come through! ( I thought it was the Power valve ) Then we too took off the top half of the Carb, and found out the Float was working, but the gas behind the float, was pouring out causing a slight flooding.. So the next day (friday) We rebuilt the Carburetor, I am glad to say That FINALLY Made it run smooth. The Needles were dirty too.. BUT , hey.. hey.. that's not all! the grand final is this! We get it on Friday night, And we are trying to get the timing and the smooth out , under load so for the most part, we thought we got the best we could do.. so he leaves for a test run,.. and comes back a short while later There is a knocking sound from the number 1 cylinder.. Kevin get a long extension rod , using it as a scope, listens for noise, on the engine, to pin point the exact location of the sound.. the he pulls the spark plug off the number 1.. Guess what... here we go again! The spark plug electrode is smashed, as if the piston has chipped off inside.. on a newly rebuilt engine.. Kevin said," the could be aluminum pistons, ..and they could be melted, if the cat was that hot, what would the pistons look like?" he said.. All I know I Feel so depressed I want to cry, find a gun and just shoot myself in the head and put my self out out of the cruel cursed misery! I might make it to Ouray, but not with my FSJ.. So, I could I my self need a really, REALLY big favor, I could use a ride maybe for the trails at Ouray, However Like I stated before, I am a Photographer ( amateur 0 I wanted to do some ( just some.. like a few) Landscape photography along the way, just jump out quick set tripod, take shot , jump back in.. and away we go.. kind of thing , but stop if I see the picture.. For that I am will to be your personal slave, and anything I can do for you that is within my power, will granted to you, as my sign of loyalty and friendship, and forever in your debt.
