The starter is far better design though. I'm going with a Delco 100 amp unit in place of the XJ one (It just happens to be chrome! ) and since I don't have an ammeter with messed up wiring to go offline and croak it, it should be fine. Many of the GW alts that came in were fine and only the vehicle had wiring trouble. From: john wrote: Seems like our old FSJs eat alternators and starters... On superdawg I'll be using the newer XJ style alternator with the 4.0L, I can't see why one of those couldn't be adapted to an FSJ. john ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 MJ http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ Black Jack's before pic: http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/FESTS/Snohomish-April2-2000/PIC00004.JPG ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 01:23:25 -0700 From: "Mike - G" Subject: fsj: Towbar on a 77 Cheif? To make a long story short I made an attempt to recover a broken exhaust manifold bolt and broke two others in the process. Then I broke my screw extractor inside the head trying to remove one of the bolts... ...so the next step was to remove the engine and have the head taken off and sent to a machine shop. I figured if I'm going to take the head off I may as well rebuild this tired motor (180K Miles). I never did pass emissions, since I have 2 dead cylinders. I never could find the problem with those cylinders. Swapped plugs and wires, and sprayed the intake to see if there was a leak somewhere. Ran the motor with the valve cover off. I didn't see any obvious problems with the valves, rocker arms, or rods. Of course with my limited mechanical experience it would have to be a very obvious problem for me to spot it. Took me about 7 hours to mark hoses, wires, and bolts and have the motor disassembled and removed this weekend. Of course this is exactly what I wanted to be doing on the nicest weekend the PNW has seen since.... well, I can't remember, but it's been a long while. Where can find a good rebuild kit (PAW, Summit)? Or should I buy a rebuilt motor? I'm open to any suggestions! I'm going to trash the intake, MotorCrap 2150 2-barrel carb, and cam. I'll probably replace those with Edelbrock Performer intake (and say bye to the power robbing EGR), carb, and cam. Unless I decide to go to Holley Projection, but that's more than I want to spend right now ($800 compared to $400). I want to be on the road again in two weeks and I'm budgeting about $1K. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 13:57:05 -0600 (MDT) From: michael.shimniok-at-usa.net Subject: fsj: Full Size Jeep Invasion Newsletter [V2/I3] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2002 FULL SIZE JEEP INVASION NEWSLETTER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - June 3, 2002 Volume 2, Issue 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - T-SHIRTS Designs for the 2002 T-Shirt are finished! Registration is currently open only to those who are pre- registered. Organized trail runs are available on a first paid, first served basis as determined first by the postmark on your payment envelope and second by when you registered. The number of available slots is limited. While we aren't charging for trail runs, we wanted to give you an inscentive to pay early, because early payment helps us a great deal. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TRAIL RUN SLOTS ARE LIMITED We are limited to 6-7 organized trail runs per day due to a limit in the number of trail leaders available. We will be running 10-15 vehicles per trail run. We have found that too many vehicles on an organized run diminishes the fun of the experience. If you don't get to participate in an organized trail run, we recommend that you organize your own trail run with people on the FSJ lists which can also be lots of fun. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WHAT TRAIL RUN SHOULD I PICK? Generally speaking, most of the trails in the area, excepting Poughkeespie Gulch, are suitable for stock FSJs. And all the trails offer great scenery. Don't wait to register just because you aren't sure what trails to pick. You can now change your trail picks after you've registered. The URL to do this will be printed on your invoice. Want to learn more about the trails in the area? You can view our Trail Encyclopedia at the following URL: http://www.cfsja.org/2002/planner/trails/index.html In the top frame you'll find a list of individual trails as well as a hyperlink to a page with all the organized trail runs and their difficulty ratings. In the bottom frame is a list of links to resources you can use to research the trails. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We still need your help to man the sign-in booth during the mornings and evenings. I finally got the 360 in the parts J10 uncovered enough to fire up (It runs SWEET!) 40 lbs oil hot just off idle (choke needs adjust) I had to buy a points dist to make it run (not too bad. Only $55 rebuilt) The Edelbrock carb and intake (probably has the cam as well) along with the headers makes this motor sound like I want my 6 cyl to sound! (Probably will too! LOL!) I have to run it for a bit then I can compression test it, but even with the broken Mallory plug wires and Champion truck plugs, it fired like it was running yesterday! (A little PB'Laster down the plug holes last week didn't hurt) I'm looking for the email of the first person that asked me for it when I posted this parts rig. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 21:46:19 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: another XP update... My PowerBook G4 with 512M didn't sell on ebay... so I'm going to relist my G4 with 384M ;) Turns out the memory is the same. relisting the mac tonight... :) So now my Sony has 384M, max'd out. But still noticed performance was slow, thought maybe I had a bad memory chip... So I swapped chips around, still slow... then I watched the processes and saw "Pop3trap.exe" eating CPU like a herd of teenagers at a movie... changed the priority, moved it to real time... yikes, took me 5 minutes to rein this guppy back in... set it to below normal, despite the protests of the windows warning message, improved... hmmm... searched and found it was the virus scan tool, set it to very low and man oh man this thing acts like it's a 1 GIG CPU with 384M of ram... rock 'n roll... I may remove the virus scanning stuff anyway since I have other tools to avoid infection. It's called Linux and "strings". :) Besides, it's already got the worst virus known to man already installed... M$. :) thanx for all the help and advice... back on track and cruising at freeway speeds again... john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1659 **************************
