The little squeaking noise I have been hearing for some time off and on is now on most of the time and seems a little louder. I got home last night and put it in the air on 4 jackstands. Put it in 2wd mode, dropped the tranny into drive and crawled underneath. ...brave or stupid, not sure which, your opinion may vary ;-) Anyway it sounds to me like it is the front output shaft front bearing that must be squealing. It isn't "grinding" yet, but "mouse squeaking" as the shaft turns. eek, eek, eek, eek,... Now in 2wd mode the front wheels were spinning slowly too, but I could stop them with my hand, and the squealing stopped. So it is only when the front output shaft turns that it happens. BUT.... maybe it's the double cardan joint? One is a pain to fix the other a nightmare...(to me at least)... Anybody have a good idea how to figure out which it is? I think the xfer case, as I can "feel-the-squeal" in the case cover. Of course I don't want to hold onto the spinning shaft so see if I can "feel" it in the spinning shaft... a moment of lucidity... ;-) The problem is that I have one more trip to make either next week or the following one. I'll find out when I get back to the office this morning. Can I just drop the front shaft and make the trip? I think that'll take any direct driving force off the front output shaft, tho it might spin free some according to what I saw happen with the front wheels in the air... but I think this would be ok for the interim... till I can get $900 for a rebuilt I can swap in. No way to fix this before the run and I'd rather drop the shaft and drive the Waggie than rent ... some... CAR... it's sick isn't it.... :-) Thanks for any idears... BTW, if you lift the floor pan it will be easier to get at! From: Ken Gaines If the seal is the one I am thinking about, it is really easy to change. It is simply a little crankshaft seal that is pressed into the tranny housing. You may have to come from under it to remove it though because the shift pivot may be in the way. Worst case scenario (like the TF727) you may have to go as far as removing the valve body and parking linkage to get the seal out. Good luck with it... Also - post it on any BBS that you regularly visit. This is BAD for is. It's another way to legislate and regulate JUST the motorized users. It's another form of taxation with out ANY representation. Also - what about the occasional guy who goes up once or twice a year to collect fire wood or to take the family out for a nature hike etc? We need to get the word out that this is an unacceptable solution. This is set up by a COMPANY to generate revenue (and as you can see below they are already taking advantage of the situation). The company is hoping to get federal authorization to institute a mandatory permit costing $35.00 as a requirement for all OHV travel on federally-managed lands. The permit would be required before any person may travel on federal land using four wheel drives, ATVs, or motorcycles. In order to obtain a permit a user would be required to take a test and pass it pertaining to appropriate mechanical requirements and user ethics. Test taking stations would be available at merchants such as auto dealers, parts places, and 4x4 shops. In addition to the permit, the company would institute its own law enforcement regulations. Fines for violations of the regulations are ranging from $900 to $1000 per violation. I have been discussing the program with one of the partners of the company and trying to explain to them the problems associated with this system. He has recently informed me that he intends to poll four wheel drive clubs to see whether they support the development of such a system. One of the initial problems I have with this concept (and I have many problems with it right now) is that their website is currently set up to allow a user to take the test and if they pass, collect their $35.00 for a permit. The website can be viewed at www.superiortrail. com . However, until the program is approved legislatively through Congress the money you spend on a permit gets you nothing. Also, the website has Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) but it fails to plainly state that this program would REQUIRE every motorized user to have one of their permits to recreate on federal lands and it fails to indicate that a permit paid for now means nothing and the money the user spends to get the permit ($35.00) gets them nothing, it simply lines the pocket of the company developing the program. In short, I have strongly indicated to these people my problems with their idea. My concern is that your member clubs will only get a part of the story when they are polled for their reaction. Please advise them to proceed cautiously with this company and their program and to ask a lot of questions if they are polled before taking a position on whether to support this program. Thanks for taking the time to pass this information on to all your members. If you or your clubs have any questions about this program please don't hesitate to contact me. Tie Rod Question Hi all, I'm trying to get the psgr side knuckle off of my D-44 front axle to prep for cross-over-steering. The ends of the tie rod attach to the knuckles, so I need to remove the tie-rod from the knuckle to get it out. Here's my problem: When I turn the bolt attaching the tie rod to the knuckle, the whole bolt spins...up inside the tie-rod's end piece. Wrenching it does not back the nut off the bolt. Here's my question: Does this sound right? I think maybe I got a busted tie-rod end?? Seems that maybe the tie rod's end-piece should prevent the bolt from spinning freely.... It's either that, finding something else that will work as a coupler between the two speedometer cables, or finding a single cable that'll run all the way from the transfer case to the speedometer. I realized one night while driving that I didn't have a speedometer. On getting to my destination, I investigated and discovered the upper cable had become detatched from the sensor and the end didn't look very good, so I got a replacement at NAPA. It wouldn't seat properly when I went to install it; and it appeared remains of the old cable was down inside the sensor, so I drilled it out, using the smallest bits to try to maintain the square hole, but I may have rounded it a bit anyway. The speedometer works, but there's noise coming from the old sensor. (I also checked operation of the lower cable and sensor by attaching a variable speed reversing drill at the transfer case end of the cable and found the sensor to be loose and noisy without the upper cable attached.)
