I undid the drain plug on the NP229, and, ooh, what's that mucky gray stuff? GEAR LUBE! after water has entered, and not much of it. Ahh! So I ran some ATF through it to wash some gear lube out. Found a good funnel to fill with, and added about 3 quarts of Dexron III. Everything seems to be working OK, as I tried out low range on a patch of dirt in the new part of the neighborhood. Is there a quick way to check the chain tension, or other xfer case tuneups, in an effort to get ready for Ouray? - - Landon 89 GW ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 09:20:11 -0700 From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: fsj: Qs - Front Axle Shafts hi all, i currently have both front axle shafts out of the front axle carrier...it's a D-44 from a 75 GM. the rotors and hubs are at the machine shop being resurfaced, replacing some wheel studs, and new bearings and seals are being put in the hubs. Q1: what should be serviced in the axle shafts while they're out? one of them does not move very freely at the joint. are there seals to do? Q2: what is the best/cheapest/easiest way to service them? i might think to take them to the local axle shop? what might i expect to pay? i don't plan to put in a front drive shaft for a while, the rear will be first...once i get this project driving, i will work out the kinks on the road, then i'll do the front drive shaft. Q3: should i do anything in the pumpkin while the shafts are out? or can i work on that later without removing the shafts again? thanks everybody, jeff 63 willys wagoneer so-cal This electronic message transmission, including any attachments, contains information from Prescription Solutions which may be confidential or privileged. BTW, I have a set of 16" 6 bolt wheels for sale (rust and chrome) with useable 32" equivalent tires on them for $100. I just took a pic of Black Jack with them on to see how much bigger of tire I will need! That's what I have planned for my front axle. I will be switching to locking hubs on my MJ when I do the diesel conversion anyway. (got permission from my wife as her leg injury won't let her drive stick anymore, and I'm trying to catch up with a guy that had a Maxima 3.3L diesel and automatic for sale. I'd have to swap the tranny output shaft, but since both are AW4, it should work fine. I guess I'll finally have a use for the 3.08 diffs I have!) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Lockers sounds like a good plan, but you'll have some issues when turning in tight spots on the trail, I've seen guys with front lockers have to disengage a hub (or was it two) to make tight mountain switchbacks. :) So, are you coming up to Ouray for the 40th Anniversay of the FSJ? :) john On Mon, 24 Jun 2002, Chris Medlicott wrote: >-->Hi John >-->Your website shows some ideas re lockers with the XJ. About 20 of them the last time I was there.. check the web site http//:www.spokane.net or search using that key word..you might find something listed in the online classifieds, the the newspaper has.. and what else is in the area, including the Cour de lane area.. I used to own a 80 wag.. R.J. Baynum 256-527-4036 Huntsville AL. 80 J-10 Honcho "Stephen D.
