I'm in the middle of putting a DIFFERENT 6 in SuperDawg... ;) On the '67 I had to move the motor mounts just a bit. There were holes already in the frame right where I needed them. :) I left the cross member in place so I didn't need to relocate or redo driveshafts. I converted it from a 327/T-85 to a 3.8L Buick V6 with a TH350. Kept the Dana 20 xfr case. I prefer to keep the trans/xfr case in place and move the engine mounts. On the 4.0L conversion it looks as though the rear member will have to be moved to the rear as the Aisin Warner automatic is longer then the T-5 and the NP219 is longer then the NP208. I think Curtis said something about 8 inches overall... :) If the 4.0L conversion works well in SuperDawg I may do it again with a nice late model Grand Wagoneer... But I still hope to convert an FSJ to Diesel one of these days... one of these days it'll work out... always does... just takes time... parts... money... time... did I mention time? ;) john At 07:41 PM 6/26/2002 -0400, fsj-digest wrote: >Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 16:41:02 -0700 >From: Kevin Pekarek >Subject: fsj: eight to six swap >While this might be sacrilege to the american "more is better", "size >matters", "sixes are wimpy" etc mentalities, I've been thinking about this >for a while. > >What all is involved in a 6 to eight swap or vice versa in an FSJ? Mounts will be needed (frame and motor brackets are also in a different position) Rad saddle will work 8 to 6, but the 6 is narrower. Exhaust, wiring (I have the 6 cyl ignition box and carb computer harness from my '84 J10 for sale. Just to the firewall plug tho) and driveshafts (front is about 5" longer and rear may be -at-2" shorter or 5" longer, depending which transfercase you use) Trans crossbar is moved back a set of holes for the 8 to 6 and vice versa. From: Kevin Pekarek While this might be sacrilege to the american "more is better", "size matters", "sixes are wimpy" etc mentalities, I've been thinking about this for a while. What all is involved in a 6 to eight swap or vice versa in an FSJ? Is it like an AMC car where the crossmember is different? Is there any difference at all? I've been thinking about stuffing a six into a newer wag, but was wondering what all would be involved. Thanks. I'll be driving through Fort Worth, and would be happy to pick you up and deposit you. Yeah, you gotta cross 3 states to get there...and I'll take the company on the trail rides, I have no preference, so you can be navigator. Cast aluminum pistons are stock and are fine. Forged aluminum pistons are nice, but require more clearance, and are louder, and are only necessary for very rigorous conditions - read - drag racing. I know some engine builders prefer cast because they feel the clearances cause power loss. Don't fault yourself, unless you heard the engine pinging, then went out and abused it for a few hours. I don't think even the idle jet miscalibration could have caused a severe overheating or lean condition. Lemme know on the Ouray deal. Wag is just about stock, so can't really go to the tough places, but would be nice to get a picture like one of the new jeep ads where the helicopter has to put the jeep down on the edge of a cliff.... My only major decision at this point is: do I take out the back seat ? so far I'm thinking, yeah, probably. - - Landon 89 GW Austin, TX ============== Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 16:32:53 -0500 From: "R.J. Well, it seems I will not be able to get my 80 J-10 Honcho, pulled apart and fixed in time for Ouray, at the very least.. It seems that the place I got the engine rebuilt at has a reputation, of building them just enough that when the warranty goes, at the 12 month , or 12 thousand miles, the engine starts to disintegrate, via the pistons.. It seems I should have bout the higher priced engine, built by companies here called "Jasper", and "Grooms" for 500 bucks more.. plus they used aluminum pistons, instead of forged pistons, and claimed they were stock.. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 07:21:26 -0700 From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: RJ Mail R.J.
