Sometimes I make modifications where they don't really impact anything, but I try to leave them alone. The rig was designed to work with all that stuff in place. I would especially keep the vapor cannister since it's where your fuel tank vents to. My '71 doesn't have one anymore and it's a real pain. I need to drop the tanks, add vent lines, and run them to a vapor cannister. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. You probably don't need the exhaust flapper, but you will need the housing it's in or else you exhaust won't quite reach the manifold. Your engine is supposed to warm up better when it's closed. I have mine wired open cause I don't trust it to open properly. I have plans to hook it up to dash mounted cable so I can operate it manually. My engine was painted black. It was impossible to see anything against that background. I got some AMC blue from Eastwood and now everything except the block is that color. I like it. The clunk you feel can be tested to see if it is the transfercase or not. With the truck in 4WD and trans in park, BLOCK the rear wheels and lift the front. Then turn the front driveshaft back and forth to see how much slack there is. The noise could also be motor or tranny mount slop, or the rear band in the trans may be slow to engage due to wear in the bore of the engagement piston (often this can be fixed by adjusting the rear band, which is inside the pan above the valve body) The V coupling is the viscous coupler, which is like a positrack unit between the front and rear driveshaft inside the transfercase. It's filled with silicate gel that will chew everything up if it pops from too much difference in tire rotation front to rear. From: Joe Schuster Hi everyone, I am looking for a glovebox owners manual for my 1987 GW.Also looking for front door speaker grills. Also when I put the GW in drive I first feel the engagement of the tranny, and then another engagement after the tranny. Is this the trans.case? Is this normal? Is there a problem.Or is there a v coupling problem and how and what is the v coupling? thanks,Joe 1987 GW ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 MJ http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ Black Jack's before pic: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/jim-b-J10.jpg ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jun 2002 08:01:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Carnuck2-at-webtv.net (jim blair) Subject: Re: fsj: Rez Report A: I use oil or spray lube on waterpump bolts (or any bolt screwed into aluminum for that matter) If you don't have the vapor pickup on the float bowl, you should plug off that port on the cannister, but I'd keep it unless you like the smell of gas while 4 wheeling! The exhaust valve can be cut out with colder running and taking longer to warm up in winter as the only "problems" AMC blue, Cat yellow, IH red all look good (as long as it isn't green!) From: "Vince Orr" Well, got the old engine pulled out today. Got all the exhaust manifold studs to spin out without breaking! Waa Hoo! :) My replacement timing cover had a water pump bolt broken off in it. Ended up breaking an easy out in it trying to get it out. It was glued in pretty good. Finally drilled it on the drill press and tapped it out again. Word to the wise......don't get gasket goop on the bolt threads when putting on your water pump!
