We had a race meeting in Adelaide (about 800km from Melbourne). Was on my way home, probably been on road for about an hour travelling happily at 110km/h with the big trailer on the back when BOOM a massive amount of smoke appeared in my rearvision mirror, I pulled over straight away thinking it may have been a tyre on the trailer but unfortunatly no. On inspection of the car I noticed a lot of oil pouring from the xfer case, bummer. It appeared as though the seal has blown off the back of the xfer case. I called the roadside assisit people and they took my big blue monster away to be trucked back to Melbourne. Luckily my father was following with his ford sedan so we at least had transport home. The saga doesn't stop there, my trailer isin't covered by roadside assist so I've had to come home to Melbourne, pick up my toyota 4x4 and drive back 8 hours to get the trailer, we leave tonight, I just wish the ford could have towed. Well I'm not too sure of the damage to the xfer case, anyone want to have a punt at what damage I could have done???? At one stage I was going to pop the seal back in fill it up with oil and head off again but I didn't want to risk more damage I've heard that these xfer cases dont' like running low on oil, and they can be very costly to repair! Should have the car back on Thursday then it's off with the xfer case for assesment. As I was pouring in gallon after gallon of coolant, I even looked under the vehicle! Ha! :) I think it is pretty much burped now. However, in a day or so, I expect my new 4 core radiator. At that point I'm switching back to a 190 degree thermostat. I tested the thermostat in hot water yesterday, and it worked fine at around 190 it started to open and at 195 it came fully open. Pulled the transmission and transfer case out yesterday, it was getting late and I forgot about the gas vapor lines attached to the side of the tranny...... Well the hoses pulled off in front and the wiring harness popped it's connector OK, but then it broke a fuel line hose in back. All seems easily fixed. However I'm going to remove the lines and such from the tranny anyway and put up in the vehicle before I put the tranny back in. I'll have more room to work that way. Morning all, awhile back I asked you guys about a hesitation I was experiencing when accelerating slowly (85 grand wagoneer-360 auto). after doing a lot of reading and talking with friends/mechanics, I have come to the conclusion that I have a problematic accelerator pump. I have looked on auto parts stores websites and have not been able to find this part. is the pump or diaphragm available? I haven't really dug into the Haynes manual yet but I am also curious about the difficulty of replacing this. Is it something the normal shade tree mechanic can do? I had plans for a 4 barrel carb and intake (intake is sitting here next to me) but it looks like hard times are around the corner and I am just going to fix my existing setup. the first round of layoffs have come and gone and round two is said to be in the works. I am likely on that second list, just not enough seniority. I am going to get all the little quirky things worked out on the wag as I will likely have to sell it if I get axed. just out of curiosity what are these things going for nowadays. good interior (some small crack and imperfections in the leather), factory sunroof, no rust, minor ding in hood, everything working, a few minor engine upgrades, new tires, 126,000 miles. I love this Jeep. I really can't imagine letting it go. but if I have no job I have debt that would need to be taken care of and the waggy would pay some of it. one car is enough for someone whose unemployed :) anyway, thanks for the help Dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Aug 2002 09:34:49 CDT From: Dan Black Subject: Re: fsj: Re: News about nothing Tesar Landon-r16884 said: {- that is great news. My AC was low on charge a year ago, and I had mine re-done for $300. That was with a working compressor, of course. But I figured $300 to have it converted and charged was the same price it would cost to have it charged with the old stuff, and if it ever happens again, this will be much less expensive. They _used_ to be $800 and up to get a system converted, but that was apparently because they had to take everything out and apart and flush the whole system, etc. etc. They still have to do some of that, but they apparently have a new oil (for sealing or something?) that is compatible with (blends with) the old oil to work with the new. They claim the new stuff can actually get colder temperatures than the old stuff. I'm not sure, but there really isn't too significant a difference IMO. I still rarely turn the AC up very high; it cools off pretty quickly. (And this has been a hot summer; we've had temps in the high 80s to mid 90s -- very often in the mid 90s, in fact -- with fairly high humidity for weeks and weeks.) So if it's been more than a year or two since you've priced the stuff, ask around. It's probably worth it to get it converted for that price. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My cat's name is "Mittens". -- Ralph Wiggum - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Aug 2002 10:47:12 -0500 From: "R.J. Don't fix it! and if it can wait, let it.. I don't want to see any body get buggered up because of a little stripped out bolt, and let it ruin the the trip, causing even more work. I am tempted , very sorely even with a blown engine to take mine ( only on that # one cylinder ).. But my Ford Diesel 250, blew up yesterday, completely , and is really burning water now, bouncing oil pressure, when engine revs, blowing big clouds of smoke. I have been running around all summer letting it burn water, just filling it as it needed, although some water is going in the oil too, getting mixed.. Maybe I should change out the oil now? Maybe it full mostly water by now? hhmm.. So I am out of business , or until my friend Kevin, comes over and helps me figure out what to do about it, fix the ford, or the Honcho Any way I hope every thing is going okay, I feel nervous, anxious and counting the days.. The annoyance kicks in when several messages are cross-posted to every list, and then the replies are cross posted or cross forwarded as well.
