My wife is not coming (scared of 15,000 ft cliffs I suppose) and I will be stopping at libraries and Burger King to check email when I can or if I have trouble. The house sitter won't be answering the phone (but I will be checking messages along the way as my wife's truck will be in the paper, and she doesn't want to deal with it) Just as soon as my oldest is out of the tub, we will be gone! (my 2nd son wanted to come but can't because he has to take care of his second family) If I get a call from Vince before we leave, we may roll past his neck of the woods, otherwise we are going down to Oregon and across the mountains at night. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2002 22:10:23 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: on the road to moab, no wait, ouray... day 3 We're in Moab. Spent most of the day in Arches State park... low '90's... took lots of pictures. Won't be able to upload all tonight... using cell to connect... Moab is a nice little town. Lots of nice XJ's here... haven't seen any FSJ's though... :( http://www.wagoneers.com/ouray/Aug13-john-day3/ Status: Paul Kershner was half way across Wyoming by 10am or so. Email from Jim Blair indicates he's pulling out tomorrow. Brent from Gig Harbor lost his engine, before leaving... The band from CA/reno is a day behind me... they're in Sandy, UT tonight... :) Heard from RJ Baynum, he's in Albaturkey. That's all I know of right now, need to read the digest after I disconnect... We'll be in Ouray tomorrow... :) john meister - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 16:33:52 -0500 From: "Vince Orr" Subject: fsj: Still working on Rez STILL can't find the ignition problem. Nothing makes sense. Checking all the wires now. So far I have continuity to all wires. Today, I replace the coil and the ignition module. Thought I had the problem solved once. One of the wires to the ignition pickup coil was crushed under the edge of the distributor cap. I put on a new pickup coil.....still not starting. At this point there is not one component in the system that has not been replaced, with the exception of the main switch on the column and the wiring harness. I've replaced solinoid, distributor, ignition module, coil, etc. No luck. Started looking through the wiring harness in the engine compartment. Checked all the fusable links. They look fine. I'm running out of ideas at this point. Tomorrow I may start all over again with the diagnostic routine in my tech manual but somehow I don't think it is addressing the real problem. Would appreciate any ideas out there. I'm thinking there is a dead wire somewhere. I don't seem to be looking in the right place. Could the problem be a burned out wire in the steering column? I don't think so because the starter circuit still works. Plus I have power in the red wire to the ignition module when the switch is on. - --Vince '81 Wagoneer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 18:10:43 -0700 From: Kevin Pekarek Subject: [joe-at-visual-concepts.com: RE: fsj: Re: Another Casualty] This was probably destined for the list, not me, since I'm not vince :) K - ----- Forwarded message from Joe Hughes ----- Reply-To: From: "Joe Hughes" To: "'Kevin Pekarek'" Subject: RE: fsj: Re: Another Casualty Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 09:43:32 -0700 X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.2616 In-Reply-To: <20020813214027.GB82244-at-mordred.punk.net> X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2600.0000 Importance: Normal X-Apparently-From: AoHellSuxBad-at-aol.com Vince, I think your thinking of the pick-up, which is inside the distributor. The ignition module is the metal box on the the drivers side fender (assuming you have an AMC motor). If you get a new one make sure it has the blue grommet/connector on it. That is how they identify the different modules. I've had Schmucks (Oops, did I misspell that, sorry Jim B.) give me the wrong one before. They also have different connectors, so you won't be able to plug it in if they do happen to give you the wrong one. Also, I find that new parts are bad more often than used/old parts. I prefer the local junk yard over the parts store, besides their cheaper, and electronics don't go bad very often. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-fsj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-fsj-at-digest.net] On > Behalf Of Kevin Pekarek > Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 2:40 PM > To: Vince Orr; fsj-at-digest.net > Subject: Re: fsj: Re: Another Casualty > > > On Tue, Aug 13, 2002 at 04:32:50PM -0500, Vince Orr wrote: > > I have a technical service manual and the coil checked out > fine on the > > multimeter. It would be going along just fine, then quit running. Would not restart or sometimes it would. Fooled with this and that, replaced a part and it would run for 2 or 3 days then would not start. Or would suddenly die after running fine for a couple of days. And I spent probably near $800 on coil, dist pickup assy, fuel pump, 2 ignition control modules, and I can't remember it all... and was down to where you are now after about 3 months of messing with it like this. I never knew when I might arrive somewhere and it resulted in more than one walk, one easily 2 miles in the dark, which wasn't that big a deal in rural redneckville except for the dang mosquitos-at-!-at-$% I didn't love my Jeep just then... but I digress... Replace the wiring harness. I hate to say it as this is a $400 part. But, after I did that, it has been running every day since then. There is a PFM wire in there, resistor wire they call it. I tried to bypass it with a wire and an appropriate resistor, but that didn't work at all. I dunno what makes it so special but it is one of the leads off to the alternator I think... I'll look all this up if you want, I think the resistor value is supposed to be 1.3ohms or something like that. Let me know if you want the gory details or decide you're gonna bite the bullet...I've got the part numbers, etc. in my files. I think what happened to mine was that this "resistor" wire must get hot and over time ended up shorting out things within the harness... I took it apart after replacement and a couple of red wires had melty spots in them where the other wire had been laying across them and was shorting volts to ground... but only occaisionally apparently... But I am fairly certain we have had at least one or two other list members with the "dropped dead symptom" which also ended up being a harness replacement fix.
