I still need to compare the numbers between 3.54's and 4.10s though to see the difference... fuel economy is the goal, but I know that off-line performance, towing and so on will be better with the 4.10s. Especially if I use the 31x10's I just got back from my son when he moved to the 35's. 4.10's would save a bit of work, I could just move the rear axle from the '75 J10 to the '83. (that also gets me upgraded from a Model 20 to a Dana 44. The front axle will need an R&P swap. I'll probably be running my 235's for a while... wait, I just bought an '87 XJ... it has some of those nasty les schwab tires on it... makes it ride like an ox cart... I could put the 235's on the XJ and use my recently reaquired 31x10.5 Michelin LTXs back on SuperDawg... Hmmm... I could have the steel rims painted the same as SuperDawg too... thanx... john >Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2002 22:50:59 -0500 >From: Mike Dillon >Subject: fsj: Re: fsj-digest V1 #1746 >John, > With 31" tires and the overdrive, 4.10 hands down. From: john Subject: fsj: out with the Z, in the the XJ... never mind the 300CD... Waiting for my J10 to be done, need wheels... wife is getting cabin fever, wants her Jeep (WJ) back... :) I'm getting tired of driving her WJ anyway... put over 23,000 miles on it in just over a year! And heading down to LA at the end of the week! Found a nice '85 300CD this weekend, but even trading the 280Z and the son's '67 Fairlane I'd still have to come up with some cash... nice car, but I don't know if I'm really ready to deal with another Benz just yet... The climate control, the cruise control... no, it's not been long enough to forget having heat blowing out when I told it I wanted cold... :) So, while driving to Home Depot I spotted a beautiful '87 XJ, Jeep Cherokee... Pioneer model, pretty simple... at, ac... no power locks/windows, no cruise... but by golly... the rear window wiper works!!! cool. mega-miles, 238,000 and it feels like it... needs some minor TLC in the mechanical division, but priced right... Should get me to and from work for a while... still have a few extras for XJs left lying around even... :) Where did I put the AMSOIL air filter from the little wagoneer? :) http://www.wagoneers.com/XJ/rigs/johns-87/ My Z should be coming out of the shop in a few days... will see if the lot with the Benz is interested in buying it, or maybe putting it on consignment at the least... need to get some cars out of here. :) http://www.wagoneers.com/tmp/280Z/ BTW, talked to my friend who's working on my J10, he's taking it apart even more... going down to bare metal on the frame... it's going to be nice when he's done... http://wagoneers.com/superdawg So, at least with an extra Jeep if he doesn't get it done by first snow it won't become a crisis situation... Hey, anyone got a set of front spacers for this XJ, and a rear add-a-leaf... can you say lift "kit"? :) I found a pair of XJ rims with 30's on 'em up in the field in my Jeep parts pile... rofl... No, NO, NO... I'm not going to start working on this one... drive it, use it, sell it... no modifications... (yeah, right, we'll see... ;) It comes home tomorrow night... both my wife and daughter thought it looked nice... makes it easier to bring it home... now to get rid of that '88 Buick with the dead engine, the '54 Chevy pickup box and that pile of cedar railing... I'm trying to decide which R&P to use on my J10 project for the best fuel economy. Performance is desired, but a distant second... - ----------- This is a tough one. You've got a heavy, un-aerodynamic vehicle, that might be a tad underpowered. But OD should be good. One big variable is tires. I think you put on new 235/75/15 last time. I had 3.73:1 gears in my Chevy 3/4 ton w/235/85/16 (much taller) but direct transmission - no OD. and was turning 2600 rpm at 65 mph - too much, but had 350 cubic inches and huge rolling mass. What's your target rpm? should be about 90% of the torque peak for highway travel, less if your truck was more efficient. Without calculating, I think you'll be happy with 3.54 or 3.73:1. - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Sep 2002 08:42:38 -0700 From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: Liberty test look Hi, mostly off-topic, but wife and I looked at the Liberty Saturday night. I think she just wants something new = Air condiitoning, rear shoulder seat belts, better gas mileage. I liked the bare bones version 4WD, it had street tires, steel wheels, and black plastic fender cladding, 4 cylinder, 5spd. and gets much better mileage than the auto V6. The storage is just so! small. what would it have hurt to extend the cargo bay and wheelbase 8-12"? The seat coverings and seat construction feels kinda cheap too. So my question, what is anyone's experience with the Mexican DOHC 4-cylinder under the hood? Could it tow a pop-up trailer (1800 lbs) It is nicely set back and appears to be all-aluminum. I tried all manner of ways to rebuild the bosses and make the armrests usable again, with no luck until I hit on this one. Take the armrest off the floor ;) and remove the two 14x2 pan-head screws that (used to) hold it on the door. Go down to the harware store and get two new 14x*3* screws, and two 1/2" rubber bottle stoppers (you know, the conical shaped ones). Pick up a couple of 3/8" #14 washers too. Using a 3/16" drill bit, hold the rubber stoppers securely and ream out a hole from the center of each one. Then put the washer over the screw shank and thread a screw into each rubber stopper. Put the assembly into the mounting holes in the armrests and screw them into the door attachement points. The rubber parts will expand to fill the tapered hole in the armrest and hold it on securely; the washer makes sure the rubber doesn't mushroom out around the screw-head. I first used this method 3 years ago and the armrest is still attached and holding firm.
