The one connector tells the alt what the battery power is, the other just turns the alt on and off. As long as the power is going to the right ones, the alt should be putting out. Sounds like a bad alt to me. (Not from Schuck's is it? I found several that people screwed with and toasted, then returned on our shelves. I bench tested them and the regs were fried!) From: Alexander Wall Subject: fsj: New alternator not charging I have my beast back on the road!! Not even drop of coolant leaking any more! I silicone-sealed the sh*t out of the water pump and its bolts. I have a new alternator in, but it's not charging. I tested the voltage to the plug in the side, and according to my Haynes manual, I should have battery voltage to pin 2, which I do, but I also have about 7.5 volts to pin 1, when the manual says it should be 2-4 volts only. It seems like this might be convincing the alternator not to excite the field, thus preventing charging. My question is: Should I just step the voltage down with a ballast resistor, or should I delve into the guts of my wiring harness to try and figure out WHY the voltage is too high through that resistor wire? I've found this is something they are often capable of doing. I put one on from NAPA and it was dead as a doornail - - L Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 11:50:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Alexander Wall < alxndr13-at-yahoo.com > Subject: fsj: New alternator not charging I have my beast back on the road!! I'd put it in reverse and he'd go forward, neutral - forward... and if I tried to stop in drive, he'd fight me every inch of the way... even neutral didn't work after a while... ya gotta love these Jeep variations of the TF727s... remember, when in park, you have no ATF going out to that cooler... idle in neutral if you're trying to cool things down, I learned that the hard way... Of course it may not be your tranny, but timing being off, or a vacuum leak. Once a year on the AMC 360's it's always a good idea to replace all the rubber vacuum lines and tighten the intake/carb bolts... john At 06:51 PM 9/18/2002 +0000, fsj-digest wrote: >Subject: fsj: 1990 GW stalling problem - looking for ideas > >hi folks > >my 1990 gw is tending to stall during braking to a full stop from speed....i >been shifting into neutral to keep engine running, and that works 99% of the >time. it does okay at very slow (parking) speeds. i changed the >trans-filter & pan-gasket, and >re-topped the fluid after assembly, and the problem persists... > >ideas? > >thanks, >jeff >so-cal >1990 gw >1963 willys wagoneer - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 18:06:07 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: interesting note on fuel economy I had an old guy come into my store and ask for the regular spark plugs for his '89 Ford 300 6 cyl with EFI. "Sure you don't want platinums?" was my reply and he said "No, they make my gas mileage drop" Naturally, I was taken aback, but after thinking about it for some time, I think I know why, so I'm going to trot this out and see what you guys think. The non-plat old copper plugs are not as efficient at burning the air/fuel mix, so 1) this causes a O2 reading that it's too rich, so it then cuts back the fuel, which 2) increases gas mileage. Is there a direct line parallel here, or am I imagining things? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2002 20:55:35 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: the superdawg project it's getting better... we decided we might as well rebuild the engine too... :) I'm dropping by to visit SuperDawg tomorrow on my way down to LA... Still need to order those seat heaters... need to look at the lumbar support situation... might just go with Recaros if I can find ones that are comfortable... Since I've got the '87 XJ I'm not as in as big of a hurry... :) Planning a few things on the XJ... what's with me any way?? :) Shoot, I've got parts laying around for an XJ, might was well use 'em... rofl... The '87 XJ, with 238,000 miles, is going to get an enema... I think the cat is clogged, then a brushguard, sunroof and a couple inches of lift... as well as a few new bushings... well, gotta run, packing up parts to take down to SuperDawg tomorrow... will be on I-5 for the next couple of days in the WJ. :) john At 03:35 AM 9/20/2002 +0000, xj-digest wrote: >Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2002 21:29:18 -0400 >From: "Darren K.
