I had two out of three that I bought blow off on my '88. One was a day or two after changing the filter (and oil), the other was immediately after changing it. I can't remember what number they were, but I can look sometime -- think it was a PF25 or PF35 or something (Fram, might've even been one of their Double Guard or whatever). Since then I've been using I think the PF11 (extra big) and haven't had any further problems. HEY! Thanks Dan. always wondered if there is/was such an option. So if I cross a PF11 with an appropriate brand (WIX, Hastings) I can use that one, right? - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 15:09:26 -0700 From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: Waterproofing John, have you done the ignition upgrade yet? Probably do this, and see if you're still having problems. I went so far as to get an MSD box off ebay, beats the std power box for durability, and will save you a weekend here and there. I have seen aerosol cans that advertise that they will seal your ignition components, usually for spark plug wires. So if I {- cross a PF11 with an appropriate brand (WIX, Hastings) I can use that one, {- right? Probably... But I wasn't sure if the ones I had blow off were due to the model number or just a "bad batch". BTW, I couldn't find the first one to test, but since the second one blew off right there, I tried putting it back on, and it felt like it got snug as I tightened it, but then it "popped" loose like if you tighten a plastic bottle cap (like on a Gatorade bottle) too tight. Anyway, they should've had the same open end as any that should work on our FSJs. I learned that trick awhile back since they have different numbers listed for different years, but the oil pump fittings seem to all be the same (at least for the 360s and 401s, and I assume 304s). Then I noticed if you open a Fram package, they have a letter/number stamp on the open end, and the ones with the same number have the same end fitting (rubber ring, thread width and count), and the only difference usually is the length of the filter. (And sounds like bigger/longer filters should be better.) The PF11 is the longest I've found, is normally in stock, and is _almost_ a close fit on some engines, but I haven't had found any that it wouldn't work on yet. So now I use those on my '88/360 and my '74/401. (I think it might've even been listed as the "right" filter for the '74/401.) BTW, the "magic number" on the open ends of Fram filters to look for is "3A". (I think the "proper" filter for the '88/360 is 3675 -- that's definitely the one I saw listed for an '85/360.) So in summary: look for a Fram filter (or compatible brand) with a "3A" on the open end. But maybe avoid the PF25 or PF35, or at least watch it really carefully. Or if you prefer another brand, try to match it. I hope to come up with a list sometime of compatible Fram numbers. I've used about four or five different ones over the years. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My cat's name is "Mittens". -- Ralph Wiggum - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 00:13:19 -0600 From: JeepNut Subject: fsj: any glass experts?
