Take the wires off the back of it and join them together if you can't just clean them off and put them back on. (easy to tell if it's bad. Now my husband finally has a place to go to discuss things about our 1985 Jeep Grand Wagoneer that your average Joe just doesn't have a clue about! I do have a quick question - where is the oil pressure sending unit on this thing? Hubby says oil gauge pegs out at 80 - Jeep runs fine and he is having a serious alternator problem. Could this be an electrical thing or is it actually oil pressure? Also, second alternator in as many years and the last time it went out it fried the electrical system - the clock hasn't been the same since! Any suggestions about how to track down and/or fix the electrical surges? Anyway, glad to know there's someone out there as in to the Jeep thing as my hubby - he will be tickled. I haven't been able to find a socket that fits the damned nut! Just from looking at it, I think it is 33mm, but the one 33mm socket I got was too thick-walled, so wouldn't fit inside the yoke itself. I'm just looking for confirmation on the socket sixe I need - do you remember exactly what size that nut is? (I think Randy had a bad day) From: Randy Guynn To: mail-at-amc-list.com Subject: Burnt up distributor/cam gears , part 10 zillion Just had contact wwith yet another AMCer that built a fresh engine and it fell victim to the wasted gear syndrome. As I have said many, many time before, it ain't always the same thing that causes this. There are many various reasons this happens. The most common one I have seen has been a walking camshaft. However assemble error, badly made .machined parts also will do the dirty deed. This fellows problem was the camshaft. No, not walking, just not completely finished. The oil hole that intersects from the front cam bearing journal thru the face of the cam was not drilled thru to completion. No intersecting holes, no oil to the gears. No oil to the gears= burnt up gears. Last fellow I ran into that had the same problem[burnt up gears] had perfectly drilled oil feed holes in the cam, but his problem stemed from the upper timing gear. The gear has a slot machined or cast into it to trans fer oil, in this case the hol;e was cast and the casting flash had the hole plugged. Again, no oil = burnt up gears. He ground the flashing out and his problem was cured. The time previous to these two times was that Com Cam [opps I named someone I hope I don't get bounced from the list] had NEVER machined the rear face of the center cam journal. Since the center cam journal was so wide, it stuck thru the block on the backside of the center cam bearing. It stuck thru so far that when the lifter would rise on the nose of the cam it would begin to ride the cam bearing journal on the cam. As the engine continued to turn over the lifter would spin[as it should] and then jump back onto the cam lobe which would then have the edge of the lifter pushing the cam out the front of the block. Classic cam walk, but not a classic reason for cam walk. All of that brings me to this point. Just because a part is Brand New-----Out of the box, does not mean it is GOOD. Check your parts, clean your parts, check your parts, clean your parts, pre assemble, de- assemble, the check your parts, clean your parts, the final assemble. Time spent LEARNING what you have for parts BEFORE you assemble them will save you more agrivation, money, and time than any other aspect of building your car. If you are not willing to invest the time and effort it takes to do the job correctly then be prepared to get bitten in the butt by what you ''think'' is just fine. Agterall, when you go to the store and buy something and the clerk say, ''that will be $1.00,'' you don't just blindly grab your wallet and never look while taking the first bill out and dropping it on the counter and walking off without checking it do you?? It could be a 5, a 10, a 20, or mayby even a c-note. Don't you ALWAYS look at the bill before you hand it over?? Well, thing of your car parts, LOOK them over , be sure they are correct, then ''spend'' those parts on your car.
