It's now in my driveway and ready to tow away! (I almost got stuck pulling it out of my backyard, but fortunately Mitch from the fsj-at-digest.net list popped by to get the gas tank and pulled me the last 30 feet) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 19:55:19 -0600 From: JeepNut Subject: fsj: heater core Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Well if anyone is cruising the list can offer any ideas.... I'm thankful today for my new 55KBTU kerosene forced air heater that's been keeping me warm in the driveway while pulling the heater core out of the Waggie today in 30-40 degree temps. It started leaking last weekend, but no time to fix, so I've been driving it with no heat since Sunday.... temps have been running upper 20's to the 50's so the afternoon drive home isn't too bad but the windchill at 60 into a 20degree breeze will chill ya in the mornings... I've got the door panels pulled apart too so there's a significant breeze through the cab too... it's been a chily couple of days running that hour to work and back... but I digress.... I bought a new heater core on Monday at NAPA and it looked about right to me. But now I have the chance to get the thing apart and of course it doesn't fit just right. And then I thought, knowing Jim Blair works for a parts house, thought maybe he would know if this is common for aftermarket SJ heater cores?.... To make this heater core work, I'll have to move the holes where the nipples pass thru the plenum wall. Have to essentially move the holes over 1/2". Not a HUGE deal, but I just don't know if I should mess with this or try to get another one that fits right off. But cutting the new holes is no more trouble than remounting the A/C and driving that cold pig an hour to a parts house and back... So I could go either way with it. The only other thing to consider is that I'm home alone for the weekend (silence is truly golden sometimes ;-)) and have no other ride, so I can't disable the truck as I'll have to use it for any potenial parts runs... Am about to take a saw and a Dremmel tool to the plenum housing to modify it so that I can use this heater core, but don't really want to if it isn't really commonly necessary. Maybe I'll wait till tomorrow when AZone is open and see if I can find a heater core in Memphis anywhere to compare it with .... now that I've got it out of the car... but what a pain,.. have to remount the A/C, etc. so I can drive the silly thing to the parts house... now with yet another gaping hole for cold air to rush in.... I knew this was gonna be a pain, it seems like heater core issues are never simple.... But man that heater is nice... Really need some second opinions I think before I cut. Any idear's y'all?
