I may have a set of these filters sitting around that I'd be interested in selling... need to go out and look to see if they're still there. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year holiday season. Sorry I haven't posted in a LONG while. School, a new job, and kids keep me REALLY busy. My CJ7 project is finally finished...I'll send a pic to Master John if he will post it. Now I have an entirely new project with a whole new set of ideas. I need a little advice from the masters of FSJ world... I have managed to acquire a 1989 GW in pretty good shape. A little minor body work will get it looking good. It DOES, however, need an engine...not a difficult task in and of itself. I have a couple of ideas that may not set too well with the purists, but I believe that they are at least worthy of some checking out so to speak... Of course, I will start with the basic AMC 360 block and heads that I already have. A 0.030 bore and a cleanup job on the heads will start the project off nicely, I think. Now for the neat parts. First, in the last several weeks, I have been doing a lot of thinking about a retrofit GM MPI system. There are two ways to go about this: 1.) Build the system myself (believe it or not, I think I could pull it off; I have a design drawn up and all if anyone is interested). 2.) Buy a custom made MPI from CustomEFIs.com for about $1800. Next idea, and I think this has been tossed around a bit in the past, a modified GM HEI distributor (coil-in-cap) to go with the GM MPI. Using a GM distributor would allow the engine to take advantage of the pre-programmed timing curves on the ECM chip (with the MPI system). So, what do you guys think about the MPI system ideas? Either way, an MPI will run me about $1800-$2200. Will it produce enough torque for a Waggy? I want to use the Summit cam/lifter kit (SUM-K8600) with this engine build-up because it seems to have the type of profile that would fit an MPI-equipped engine. Thanks in advance for any advice and/or experiences you guys may have. Keep on Jeepin'!!! I have a TBI setup from him on my '88, and as soon as I can afford it (still a year or two off due to other things, like a new furnace this coming week), I'm going to get an MPI setup from him for the '74 (on the 401, with a dual-quad Offenhauser aluminum intake! -- now THAT will be custom!). I've been happy with mine. Never quite the mileage I wanted in the midwest, but much better mileage in the mountains when you can't get as much power. Only been getting 9-11 in town and 10-14 hwy here, but in the mountains, like Denverland and above, I consistently got probably 15-16mpg, and am pretty sure I got above 19 for a 100mi stretch right after Ouray! And speaking of Ouray, it ran wonderfully out there, and there are plenty of witnesses to that. :) My old review is linked from his site; it's at: http://dan.black.org/88GW/evans.html and I need to add the bit about Ouray to it. {- Next idea, and I think this has been tossed around a bit in the past, a {- modified GM HEI distributor (coil-in-cap) to go with the GM MPI. This sounds like a good idea from what I've read (to go with the fuel injection), but I don't know much about it. If you do do it, I'd love to hear details -- like the work involved, exactly what you had to buy and how much, esp. brand and model and where you got it. It's been hard to get straight answers from anybody, because nobody seems to know quite what it involves or what is even available that would work in our engines -- or any engine that's not a Chevy 350, for that matter. :P Anyway, since the '74 still runs points, I'll definitely want to change it when I do the MPI system for it, so be sure to keep us updated! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- YIKES! - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Jan 2003 22:52:04 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: '79 Golden Eagle & Ranger Diesel fo' sale... my son has decided he'd rather XJ then SJ... so he's selling his'79 Golden Eagle Cherokee AND his '83 Ranger Diesel and buying my '87 XJ so I can "upgrade" my XJ to a newer model. I also heard that the prices is only something like $140 if they supply the distributor and $110 if you send them a distributor for modification. I'll have to get some clarification on that point from someone on another board (Jeeps Unlimited CJ Forum). That MPI system you are looking at sounds pretty neat. I have actually been looking into this for quite a while as I REALLY hate the Holley 4160 carb that currently feeds my CJ's 360. With the dawn of the new Waggy project, the CJ will just have to live with the POS Holley for a while until I get this MPI/TBI thing all worked out for myself. CustomEFIs.com is a great site. I have talked with him several times concerning MPI conversions for AMC V8s and he has always been nothing but helpful and informative. In fact, he looked at the initial design that I drew up and found all sorts of stuff wrong with it. Once I changed what he said to change, the design was pretty solid, but about $400-$500 more expensive than purchasing a kit from him. The added expense was in the -AN fittings and stainless steel braid hose I was planning to use for a fuel loop/fuel rail. I really am leaning toward buying one of his MPI systems.
