A: Standard or automatic? If automatic, and the front driveshaft is on the driver's side, it will fit (this eliminates any possibility of an end of '79 year titling snafu) If standard, and both are V8s, no prob also. The transfercase options were different for '80 than '90, but the NP219 is same legth (it's 4x4 full time as opposed to the '90's NP229 part/full time) and the NP208 uses the same lever on the floor for everything 2hi and 4hi/lo, but the rear diveshaft is longer than the NP229's) The standard would have to be from the same motor for everything to work for the swap. (I'm still in hock from the Ouray trip last summer) From: john this is a tempting event... it's about a 2.5 day drive to Moab... one day to Boise, another to SLC, then half a day to Moab, from Seattle... October should be a good time... cooler... ;) Moab is a cool place... What's cooler is my wife won't object to my wheelin' my '87 xj there... ;) However, being unemployed right now I'm not sure what or where I'll be by then... may have to relocate. may have sold my xj by then, hopefully my J10 will be done by THEN. ;) john ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 09:51:34 -0800 From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: RE: fsj: trans compatibility question 80 into 90? automatic's and v8's. i'm not planning to do anything with xfer cases unless it makes the process easier. i think the trans is having problems in the 90, but it could be something else. i need to get it diagnosed. if i find out a trans-overhaul is required, i want to take the 1980 trans in for rebuild and then put in in the 90 myself. - -jeff - -----Original Message----- From: Jim B [mailto:carnuck-at-hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 9:41 PM To: fsj-at-digest.net Subject: Re: fsj: trans compatibility question 80 into 90? One of the goofy things with a junkflight ... er... torqueflight is that they use a TV cable to play with fluid pressure, kinda like a ford AOD. If the cable is off in one direction, you will have EXTREMELY harsh transmissions that make it feel like you're driving a ten ton garbage truck with a freezing cold allison . If the cable is off in the other direction, you'll get slippage in gear, starting with the highest gear, eventually moving down. With it set not THAT far off, you'll have extremely mushy shifts. I don't think a 90 would have a lockup converter, so that shouldn't be a problem. Could be something as stupid as a clogged filter (which has bitten me more than once). > if i find out a trans-overhaul is required, i want to take the 1980 trans in > for rebuild and then put in in the 90 myself. Getting the tranny built on the bench like that (as opposed to requiring the shop to pull it from the truck) will usually save you a truckload. Some shops around here are a little edgy about using the words "warranty coverage" and "bench build" in the same receipt. Check to make sure you have a warranty you'll be happy with before agreeing to have work done. Good luck. I'm working on a trade of my '76 280Z for an '84 300CD (turbo Diesel) and if it works out I can sell the XJ now instead of when SuperDawg is done. Problem is I'm not sure what the '87 is worth. I had the rear main seal replaced, it's tuned, converted to amsoil synthetics, runs great, has a 3" lift, 31x10.5 Michelin's, hitch, CD, but otherwise is a plain model... a/c does work, but no pw/pdl or cruise. Gets decent mileage, around 16-17 in town. It does have 241,600 miles on it but isn't using oil and has been well cared for. http://www.wagoneers.com/XJ/rigs/johns-87/87-cherokee-1.jpg So, what's it worth about??? If all this trading works out my son will probably be selling his '79 Jeep Golden Eagle Cherokee... and that '83 Ford Ranger Diesel, which will make my wife happy... ;) trying to get rid of a few cars around here... ;) It'd be nice if I could keep the XJ and the Benz and Superdawg... but... ;) BTW, my Lasik surgery was very successful, ended up with better then 20/15 vision! See my sig file for info on the place, top notch, near Sea Tac so you can fly in from out of town... I waited a lot of years for the technology to be right... and it is. Glad I waited.
