(note position of rotor in relation to the dist case with a mark on the housing. I usually set it with the rotor facing straight ahead and mark directly below it. Then, you pull the dist up enough to rotate it one tooth in the desired direction that you want the vacuum advance to move, so you will have more clearance. Then, after seating the dist back into the pump and gears, rotate the dist body so the rotor aligns with original position you marked (before turning engine over!) I've also just rotated the dist so the rotor faces the next contact inside the cap, and rotated the plug wires back one step. From: James Isennock Subject: fsj: TFI Upgrade Vac Canister Location Anyone else got clearance issues with the distributor Vac. can after installing the big Ford TFI distributor cap on an AMC 360? My 87 G-Wag runs O.K. after the conversion (not as well as I hoped, I did the TFI coil and the light advance springs too) I get the best performance with the distributor positioned so that the vac hose is like 1/64" from the Power steering belt - this seems far from ideal as every now and then I have to replace the hose as the belt wears through. You might want to start looking for a replacement. I put on a extra deep tranny pan on my 727 that I got through Summit Racing. It barely clears the crossmember on my '81 Waggie. I think it took something like 8 quarts to fill mine but that was with all the oil out of the torque converter and an extra two quarts for the deeper pan. I also had to put on an extension for the filter so it draws from deeper in the pan. The extension came with the pan. As you know, you can't keep these trannys cool enough. I also added a heavy duty cooler. Mine has run great for years now. - --Vince '81 Wag '99 TJ - ----- Original Message ----- From: "JeepNut" To: "_FSJ List" Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 12:16 AM Subject: fsj: Adjusting bands on the 727 Well, I looked at every shop in our area, AutoZone, Advance Auto, O Reilly, Sears, and not one of them has a square socket that you would use on a ratchet, nor an 8 point socket either. All are 6 and 12 pointers. But no worry, I got it done today. I talked to a guy at a local transmission shop and got a good first impression talking to him. I find that so rare around here. Few people seem to really KNOW what the heck they are talking about. They seem to like to hear their teeth clack together, whether or not they have any justification for their ideas about how something should be done. Or whether what they are saying makes any real sense at all. Anyway, he had a MUCH better gasket than the crap I got at AutoZone with the filter. I showed him my pan and he was impressed with the work I'd done flattening the bottom of it and the lip. Somebody had bumped the pan several times hard. So hard in fact that there were impressions in the pan for each of the three screws that hold the filter in place!! We talked about how to install the cork gasket, and he showed me to just use a 5/16" wrench, snug it up with one finger, then back it off. Seems to have worked pretty good. Seems to be doing much better. At least it did after I got it filled up all the way. AND the durned cork gasket ISN'T LEAKING!!! First one I did that didn't leak. First one I didn't buy at AutoZone. What I thought WAS odd.... it took 6 quarts nearly to fill it up right. How could that be? Anybody care to comment about this idea? The old filter was completely clogged. I doubt that fluid could pass through the thing at all. Could the filter being clogged have caused the torque converter to have been sucked a little low too? Just trying to figure out how come a job that should have taken 3 quarts, took nearly 6. (and yep, checked in Neutral, at idle, after running it several miles to warm up good) Always curious, JeepNut - -- Registered Linux User #287453 In a world without walls and fences, who needs Windows or Gates? - ------------------------------------------------------------ '87 Street Comanche #24/100 '88 Grand Wagoneer '87 Grand Wagoneer '92 Cherokee ...and they say there's only one... - ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Feb 2003 17:17:08 -0800 From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Re: Adjusting bands on the 727 so true... keeping those slushboxes cool really does help... synthetic atf will also help drop the temp, depending on the brand as much as 50 degrees F! (Now if the fellow lister I bought the truck from is reading this, I mean no offense as I have no idea how long they had it or how much they drove it, or what maintenance was done on it, but this is what I observed...) The pan had a significant layer (maybe 1/8") of grey goo all over the inside of it, the magnet in the corner was caked with grey goo, in fact a few actual metal shavings were sticking up off of it. Not a LOT of shavings, but metal pieces none-the-less. Of course, the "grey goo" is mostly a metal dust and dirt compound created by normal wear I suspect. The metal shavings, worse news I'm sure, but no idea what is wearing. However, the fluid is brown, not even vaguely red, and stinks pretty bad. In fact the dipstick is discolored like it has been real hot in the past. Now this tranny has over 150K miles on it as far as anyone knows and I suspect it never had a filter or fluid change in it's life. As well this puppy has some "non stock" Motorcraft 2bbl on it, (meaning NOT a 2150) but this carb has NO linkage for the tranmission kickdown assy to attach to. So the tranny linkage is just laying on the manifold, making it litterally jump from first, to second, to third with little or no delay. Who knows how long it has been driven like this, but it doesn't look like a recent carb change. Now keep in mind, this was bought with intentions of it being a "parts truck". So if the 727 needs rebuilt, I don't really care. But right now, it is my back-up for when I'm doing something with the '88 that takes a couple of nights to finish. I HAVE to get to work daily. So it is a nice bonus that she is driveable and making 70mile round trips pretty regularly. So I've changed the tranny oil and filter, adjusted the bands and got her all topped off over the weekend along with a bunch of other work, and it is shifting fine as long as I shift it manually. Tonight, I pulled up the kickdown linkage assy. with a tie-wrap and will see if I have it pulled into a good enough position for it to improve the shift points as I drive it tomorrow. I didn't have any baling wire on hand. But given all that. I think it's amazing that this thing operates at all. Seems like a pretty forgiving "piece of junk" tranny to me...
