Could be corroded contacts on one of the door switches or a bad ground somewhere. The way these things work is you close the door and it gives you X amount of time and then fades it out. Pretty slick when it works. The fact that it takes longer indicates additional capacitance in the circuit... my guess is there's corrosion somewhere. john At 09:39 PM 2/20/2003 -0600, Damian Shaver wrote: >I have a friend with a 94 Grand Cherokee that is having problems with his >interior lights staying on. Ok, upon further inspection we figured out that when he uses the remote door lock to unlock the truck, the interior lights come on for about 30 seconds then shut off. Later, when we open the door and shut it, the lights go off instantly. So my new question: is there a way to reduce the timer to about 10-15 seconds instead of 30? Or is that a factory timer that he is stuck with? Thanks John for the fast response! I could use some help in identifying/verifying what this is and which engine it has. (it's a 1972 Mercedes Benz 350SL) http://www.wagoneers.com/ebay/1972-350SL/the-72-350SL.jpg The owner says it's a German car. I noticed that it's been re-vin'd in Washington State. The V8 looks like the same one I had in a '74 450SEL. There is some question about this model, engine mainly, and if it is the German model then it's probably more desirable. It does have European headlights. It appears to be a SOHC V8 with Bosch fuel injection. I couldn't find any identification that it was an M116 engine, but it sure looks like it might be. The pix are at: http://wagoneers.com/ebay/1972-350SL/ I'm putting it up on ebay for the owner, opening at $3,500 no reserve. (userid: dieseljohn) should have my pictures and description ready by noon tomorrow... http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/dieseljohn/ This is one of those "found in a barn" type stories. The owner parked it in 1991 in Eastern Washington (desert climate). They bought it as a restored car in 1986. When parked it ran. It doesn't run now but the problem is the fuel system... just had the same problem with a '76 280Z that had been sitting for several years. It cranks, all the electrical things work, lights, radio, etc. But no fuel. The owner said he can smell bad gas and doesn't hear the fuel pump. My guess is around $500 worth of parts is the maximum it'll take to get this jewel running. If you have a shop fix it the bill could hit $2K quickly. I'd make the repairs for someone if they buy it at a reasonable price and make it road worthy to make it across the continent. I'm guessing I could do it for parts and labor under a grand in around two weeks, depending on parts availability. (If I had a full time job right now this vehicle would be in Snohomish right now. :) I can't afford to take on a project like this right now. So the owner liked my idea of selling it for him on ebay. :) The owner says this car is fast. His parents let him drive it to High School. :) He's got two very young kids now and can't keep it. It's straight and solid. The only exception is the floorpans behind the seats have rusted through, check the pictures, it's not widespread and resulted from sitting. It's just across the back part of the floorpan, looks very easy to repair. I've seen a lot worse! The convertible top also needs to be replaced. Estimate on a new ragtop is around $400. The tires and rims look fine. The leather seats need some help, they didn't age well. The paint looks great! Whoever painted this car knew what they were doing. The only blister I found was on the passenger door up near the top. Again, look for the pictures... (hope you have a fast connection) The car appears to have the 96,000 miles showing on the clock. The owner said that whoever restored it did a great job. They also installed a 450SL emblem on the back. If you know anything about this car or model please let me know. I'm confident it's going to sell easily on ebay because it's going up at $3,500 with no reserve. It's out in the Seattle area in a nice secure location. Had a heck of a time finding the place. ;) If you're on any Mercedes lists please pass this info along. This fine automobile needs a better home then a barn in Eastern Washington, or a tarp garage in Western Washington. Or, maybe, you could buy it for me and I'll take good care of it. :) thanx for any info you might have, john meister snohomish, washington - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 00:43:56 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: 360 -> 401 A: Easy for the flywheel. Ask for a '73 Matador 401 flexplate (cars ran 727) I posted the part number a few times recently (weren't you taking notes? ) Check out schucks.com (or partsamerica.com ) for the online catalog and get the part number. (they showed 2, but one supercedes the other) Don't forget to check the pilot hole in the crank with the 727 converter to make sure the tranny killer sleeve isn't still in there! From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: 360 -> 401 Well, I'm going through the final details of getting a 401 to have rebuilt to replace the 360 in my '88 GWag. The current issue: the flexplate. Many people have said you need the 401 flexplate when switching from a 360. However, there's an issue with the 401 flexplate going on a TF727, since it was originally on a TH400. There are apparently two possiblities. (This is the point where I'm wondering if anybody sees any problems with my plan.) The first is to have the 360 flexplate rebalanced by a machine shop. However, this sounds like the worse of the two ideas because the machine shop I called looked it up and said all the old AMC V8s are externally balanced, so it'd be a mess to get it to work. The second possiblity, and what I'm planning to do (again, looking for verification here...), is to get the 401 flexplate and just have them drill new holes to match the TF727. (Drilling the holes changes the weight slightly, but supposedly _only_ slightly, i.e., not enough to make a serious difference.) The other nice thing is that even if the guy I'm getting the 401 from can't find the flexplate, I can get a brand new one for $63 plus shipping. And no, I don't want to swap out the TF727 for a TH400 -- more work, and then I have to figure out using the transfer case (NP229?) with the TH400... Or "just" swap the entire drive train and convert to the TH400, BW1339 Quadratrac, new axles... Yeah, waaaay more work and EXPENSE than I want to go through. I'm already going to be making some moderately big changes to the fuel injection. ;) So, if anybody could comment on whether that's a good plan or not, especially if you have personal experience putting a 401 in with a TF727, I'd appareciate it. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 00:51:07 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: transmission linkage on '74/401/TH400 A: If the hose on the modulator is still in good shape and it's not losing fluid, then inside it is a screw that you can adjust (IIRC, screwing in 1/2 turn makes the shift harder and higher) From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: transmission linkage on '74/401/TH400 A separate question from my engine swap... On a '74 with a 401 and a TH400, anybody know how to adjust the transmission linkage? Mine shifts a lot slower than I want (correct shift points, but takes probably a couple seconds to shift, and has since I got it and had the transmission rebuilt), but I can't find any linkage on the side of the throttle body like the 360/TF727 has! Just the linkage from the accelerator; nothing else... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 15:26:30 EST From: HouTexFrk-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: window will not roll up I took the whole door panel and trim off every thing looks good the motor spins but the window just wont come up. I had one break, and the replacement, while not fun, wasn't all that difficult. I followed the step-by-step instructions in my Haines manual, and got it done in a couple of hours. I remember being surprised at the relatively low price of the gear-strip from the Jeep stealership.
