I"m picking up a 401 on my next trip East (thanks Zach!), and before I get all excited I need to clear up the flexplate issue. I lost the last digest (oops wrong button), so missed the resolution. I will be putting the 401 onto the th400 that's in there. The PO, son of the original owner, put the 360 in, in place of the original 401. The current flexplate is new, as the tranny was rebuilt and in the process we found a big crack in the swiss cheese flexplate. Anyway, what I need to know is this, and pardon having to repeat this info: Do I need the flexplate w/the 401, or since both motors that have been in my Jeep were from 400-equipped sources, can I reuse it? I was under the impression that the other issue revolved around swapping into a 727'ed GW.... anyway lemme know hehe It will be nice to have the right engine back in the monster. Thanks!! Flexplates do not interchange between AMC v8's of different sizes, because the flexplate is part of the balance. The problem with going from a 360 to a 401 in a rig with a 727 is the same problem in a rig going from a 360 to a 401 in a rig with a TH400. The difference is that a jeep never came with a 401/727, so you have to use AMC car parts to do the swap. Putting a 401 in front of a TH400 is not a problem, but the 360 flywheel won't work. You'll need to get one that came from a 401/TH400 rig, which was an option in jeeps. As I understand it (thanks to people around here the last week or so), the balance of the 401 and 360 are different. So you need a 401 flexplate for a 401 and a 360 flexplate for a 360, no matter which tranny you use. Besides that, you'll also have to be able to mount the flexplate to the right tranny. The best way to do this is to get one for a car or truck that had the right combination. Examples: AMC401+TH400: flexplate from '74 Wagoneer (w. 401) AMC401+TF727: flexplate from '73 Javelin, Matador, or Ambassador (w. 401) AMC360+TH400: flexplate from '74 Wagoneer (w. 360) AMC360+TF727: flexplate from '84-91 Grand Wagoneer (w. 360) Of course, other vehicles and years could have the right combos; those are just combinations I'm pretty sure of now. Fortunately, it sounds like most of these should be avialable brand new for $45-70, though you may have to pay shipping since they seem to usually be special order. But just call around your local parts shops. And it pays to comparison-shop; it can make $20-30 difference. It should to be cheaper to buy it new than get a custom one. And if you're going to the trouble of such a major change, might as well buy a brand new flexplate at those prices; that's a significant place that you don't want to mess up. Again, thanks to those on the list (like Jim Blair and Kevin Pekarek) for helping me figure this stuff out over the last week. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything. -- Alexander Hamilton - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 01:01:42 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: change of plans leads to major parts sale Looks like I am changing my plans for axles (AGAIN! ) If what I dug up today in BC (Canada) pans out, I will be selling my '84 J10 D44 front diff with fresh 4.10 gears, and the pair of machined flat top knuckles with high steering (from Colorado K5 that I spent buck$ on). For years I used WD40, sort of worked I guess. But I found out that it tends to gum things up, guess because it uses vegetable oil. Then I actually used electrical contact cleaner, some CD- something or another that I had used as a TV repairman... but lately I've been using AMSOIL MP (Metal Protector), it seems to work ok, but it does tend to get things "oily", although it's not oil as such... http://www.wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/mp.jpg (and I've tried PB blaster, but man is that stuff nasty... ;) I've gone through these electrical connector issues with my old Full Size Jeeps and the old Mercedes Diesels... seems if a vehicle sits for a while it becomes a problem, even the XJ's seem to have trouble with their power windows... so, anyone have any contact cleaning suggestions? and where to get it? I'm going to go through the http://wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/190D 's electricals tomorrow... :) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1871 **************************
