I think it actually plugs into the back like my Eagle's AM/FM 2 way radio did. From: Brazzadog-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: New FSJ in the family Last week I picked up a '78 Cherokee Chief. I've wanted one of these for as long as I can remember. I'd had my eye on it for years as it was just sitting out in the sagebrush and never seemed to move. The price was right and it came with a factory service manual. Now I wish I'd paid more attention to the years of AMC era discussions I ignored while working on my '71. Question #1: It makes me feel stupid, but I can't figure out where to plug in the mic for the factory AM/FM/CB. Question #2: The rear wheel flares will need to be replaced. I e-mailed Raybuck's the other day but have had no response. My other option is to cut some off a junked Cherokee. Anybody have any complaints about the fiberglass wheel flares? This is for contacts that I can get to easily. I'll just rub them between my thumb & forefinger. 2- On some difficult to access connectors, I'll use a fine grit nail file (the ones that are basically popsicle sticks with an abrasive coating) or perhaps a small tooth brush soaked in contact cleaner. The nail file can be effective because it can be trimmed down to size. 3- This is a new one that I've had some success with & plan to use more often. It's a product called Connoisseur's Jewelry Wipes. My wife got these from a jewelry place when she went to have her ring resized. They're 3" by 3" thick paper towel type pieces with a light powder abrasive all over them. They come in a container that's roughly the size & shape of a stick-type deodorant container. I tried one on my wedding band, & I was amazed at how much gunk it took off & how shiny my ring was. I thought that it might work well on those electrical contacts that have some oxidation on them that the contact cleaner doesn't seem to be able to get off. I tried it, & sure enough, it made them shine like new with just a little rubbing. Any time I use this, I go back over it with some contact cleaner because the towels leave some powder residue behind. I'm not sure where these (or similar products) can be bought. When I run out, I plan to start asking around at jewelry stores. 4- This is very effective, but it's a bit on the pricey side. It's a product called Stabilant 22. This is a contact enhancer. It's a clear liquid that's applied to the connector. In the presence of electrical current, it becomes a conductor. Therefore, it allows a connector to pass current as well as a soldered connection. Also, the connector doesn't have to be perfectly clean for it to work. I won't go into great detail about how it works. They have a web site that has a lot of technical info. It's www.stabilant.com I heard about it through the Alfa Digest (also hosted by Krusty Motorsports), but it also seems to be quite popular with RC & electronics hobbyists. On my Alfa, I've chased away a number of electrical gremlins with this stuff. For automotive applications, it's distributed by Borg Warner under part number EC-85. I ordered it through O'Reilly. The bad part is that it costs $45 for a 50 ml container. The good part is that a little goes a long way. It only takes one drop to treat a connector. On the older models, with the heater controls on the left of the steering column, there were three vacuum hoses going to the heater/defroster controls. And the Quadratrac models Greg mentioned had an E-drive vacuum switch mounted in the back of the glove box, or possibly on the left. But an '86 would not have Quadratrac, and the heater controls are in the middle. Maybe Jeep just put in a few more to confuse us... ;) Frazier Phillips wrote: {- The vehicle is a 1986 GW. Panel Doors too! I'll try to get up to the fiberglass fabricator next week... If this guy is as solid as he sounded on the phone I think that we'll have a good working relationship. We could even fabricate the fender flares off of WT for attachment to a NT. :) I have the flares off the front of the Golden Eagle, not sure how to extract the rear ones... oh yeah, I'll just hand the sawzall to my son and say don't damage the flares... he'll do fine... rofl... ;) I have to drive about 400 miles total, first south, then north again, then south to even assess this situation... I'm afraid to hazard a guess on pricing, but the fabricator will save the molds for me and is not interested in selling them. So that means I'll have to be the distributor, importer... I'll also be working with Curtis who is a master at customizations, painting and detailed restorations. SuperDawg will be our spokesperson to show what is capable for the right price. He'll be the guy doing the FSJ resto's and customizations once we get rolling. I will be making a sizeable investment in this project and may even get a Willys bed and a regular J10 to convert. SuperDawg is going custom, so building a completely stock J10 stepside over time might be kind of cool... wait a minute, what am I saying? we haven't finished the first one yet... I'm outta my mind... :) I need a barn, or at least an extension to the carport... rofl... Anyway, stay tuned to this FSJ channel for updates. We're cooking up all kinds of ideas and have the skills and resources to begin fabricating what is needed to support FSJs. Until we can get an effective production method in place the costs will have to be high, sorry. These are limited quantity items we're talking about. There is a market. I don't think that making a living or even a reasonable profit on things like this is wrong, especially if everyone is happy. The idea is to make old things better or work. We must sustain the SJ model line. :) I guess we'll have to have three possible price points: full resto, custom and repair. Oh yeah, I may be dragging the J-100 Panel doors up there as well. I'm not sure if they'll fit in my Jeep easily... Maybe I'll have to do the rear fenders first and then go up there with the J10 trailer as soon as it's done with the panel doors in there. Meister Distribution & Services may be the only source (unless someone else goes through the trouble and expense of making the molds) for J-10 Stepside fender flares and the Panel Doors. We need a source for the Hinges and latch assemblies. I know that we could manufacture them, but machining costs are signficant. Shoot, if I can get all the parts and striping together for the Panel Door conversion on a Grand Wagoneer I'll build my Diesel FSJ. :) Remember that I'm going into this idea as a business adventure and not just as a hobbyist. I hope to sustain a real business along this line with the help of a few trusted friends. We're also looking at doing FSJ restorations and customizations. The price tag will not seem affordable to most, sorry, but we have children, mortgages and dreams too. My guess is there are enough folks willing to save lunch money, quit smoking cigarettes and skipping the after dinner beer to save up for some cool FSJ stuff. To give you an idea of costs it cost us over $250, wait, cost me... ;) to make the adapter to mate the NP219 to the Aisin Warner 4speed auto. That's probably why Advance Adapter gets close to $500 for an adapter, this stuff ain't cheap to deal with. You can't run a business giving stuff away for material costs alone. You have to pay for the space, tools, electricity and fuel for the workers... ;) One of the biggest problem with all of this is how do we get a new fender or panel doors from the Puget Sound area to points east... I happen to know of a couple of truckers... problem is there's only a few of us and just not enough market to sustain this sort of thing as a viable business... at least not initially. That means folks first buying are going to be paying more and I'll be dumping a lot of my money and time into this and the other players will be dumping a lot of their resources as well... Unfortunately it's all about covering costs and making a living. As we all know all of this stuff takes a LOT of TIME. john At 08:10 AM 2/28/2003 -0600, Allen wrote: >I know there is plenty of interest in step side beds (or finding the lack >of) on the ifsja forum. However, plugging it in properly sealed the leak it created, thus vac is now available for the cruise control to work as well. The vac supply for both comes from the "softball" vac reservoir in the center of the firewall. A leak in one would rob vacuum from the other. AFIK the cruise control has NO vac lines under the dash. (under the hood yes). The other thing it could have been is supply for the vac operated heat/ac controls-same theory plug the leak in the vac system and everything starts working.
