I'm just curious, having pulled the guts out of both the 14bolt AND a d44, how any machinist can say the 44 is superior. From the pinion support to the hubs, 14bolts are just burlier. Whay say said machinists? *rapiers out* EN GARDE!!! teee heee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 14:06:57 -0500 From: James Isennock Subject: fsj: re-fire of motor that's been sitting I'll be firing up a motor this weekend that has been sitting for about five years after the break-in of a rebuild. Motor has been installed in a vehicle sitting outside for all this time. I'll change all the fluids and build up some oil pressure prior to firing. Anyone have any suggestions for dealing with rust that may have formed in the combustion chambers while its been sitting? If the motor turns freely you'll probably be ok. I'd change the oil before starting it. I'd also disconnect the coil and crank it until you have good oil pressure with the fresh oil. Will probably be fine... john At 02:06 PM 3/7/2003 -0500, James Isennock wrote: >I'll be firing up a motor this weekend that has been sitting for about five >years after the break-in of a rebuild. First, my brother-in-law didn't have a factory manual, & the diagrams in the Haynes manual was woefully inadequate. I found that my local public library had volumes of Clymer (sp?) manuals in their reference section. For a few dimes, I had detailed copies of all the wiring diagrams I needed. In fact, I even enlarged the copies to make them easier to read. Second, you didn't indicate exactly what kind of problem you're having, but I thought I'd share the problem I found with my brother-in-law's truck in case you find it helpful. If not, apologies in advance for the waste of bandwidth. It had no power to the starter, & no circuits with switched power were working. Circuits with direct voltage worked just fine. Not only was the ignition switch fried, but one of the fusible links coming off the battery was burned as well. After frying a new ignition switch & a new fusible link & after way too much circuit tracing, I found the problem circuit in a very obvious place. There is an electrically operated cold start device on the carburetor (can't remember it's official name), & its circuit runs un-fused straight to the ignition switch. An improperly installed thermostat housing gasket had created a puddle of coolant in a small valley of the intake manifold. A connector for that cold start circuit was sitting in that puddle of coolant, & that caused it to short to ground. It was very obvious once I found it because the plastic part of the connector was quite the crispy critter. The wire for the circuit was orange. The ignition switch sits about halfway down the steering column. The lock assembly where you put the key in is only a lock. It is linked to the actual switch via a thin, metal rod that hooks into a hole in the switch. Switches are cheap & available everywhere. Hope some of this was helpful. Subject: Kaiser and Willys Go to War - Again! From: Cliff Danley I was recently recalled to active duty, and have been shipping stuff overseas. Among the Oshkosh, Stewart/Stevenson, AM General, and FMC trucks, are a surprising number of vintage Kaiser 2 1/2 ton trucks from the 1960's! And in decent shape too. I have been looking for an M175 Jeep (the Army version of the J20 truck) but haven't found one yet. I thought this was really cool, until the other day, I came across a truck that looked somewhat different - turned out to be a 1957 Willys. Still in service!!! And NOT ONE old Dodge, Ford, or GMC has been found. Cliff Danley ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Mar 2003 14:12:20 -0600 From: "Vince Orr" Subject: fsj: It's Here!
