(They changed -at-'78 and maybe again later) There is a kit from Crown that makes it hand crank as well (I put a used conversion kit in my old '83 Cherokee) Relacing all the rails and sliders seems to be the best fix (makes it easier to roll up, so the motor doesn't work as hard) From: "Tacoma White" Subject: fsj: tailgate problems on our beasts I am getting irritated w/rear window. Of course! And, I'm also working on a new rear window dealie, a 2pc setup like other sensible designs heheh. Of course, if I come up with a workable solution I"ll get the information to the rest of the list.... but in the meantime... anyone have a good way to fix these things? It seems that the motors wear out, so is there a feasible way to replace them or rig up a fitting for a new, available type? I have done NO research, so forgive me if this is rehash hehhe keep the rubber side down, Tacoma ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2003 11:13:13 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: RE: fsj: TF727 behind a 327? A: IT's been done (several AMC-listers have done it) but it requires machining the crank flange and buying an adapter to do it. (I was going to put the '68 327 my son had into a Grand Wagoneer. That was the stopper as we didn't have the buck$ to tear the motor down, so he sold the motor and trans) From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: RE: fsj: TF727 behind a 327? it has a manual trans now...and i have a spare 727 in da-yard. assuming i keep the 327 i'd use a th/400 if i go to an auto-trans. - - -jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2003 11:24:56 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: fwd: Arizona lister looking for 360 brackets From: "James Towle" Subject: 360 bracketry/pulleys I need a set of matching AC bracket, alt bracket (Delco type), water pump pulley, main pulley and alt pulley (Delco type) from a 304 or 360. The old rambler 327 was a great motor, arguably better suited for a truck application than a chevy 327 (and probably even a chevy 350) - block was MUCH stronger than most of the generic chevy small blocks, crank and rods on a rambler 327 were all forged. The main problem with a 327 from a performance standpoint is they don't breathe well higher in the rev ranges, due to the valve design. (rambler guys overcome this with a turbo, and have no problems with the stock low compression motor taking 10 psi). The other two drawbacks are aftermarket support is virtually non-existant, and the engine weighs about as much as a GM big block. They're great engines though, solid as a rock. There's one wandering around Redwood City with over 400k on it in a 66 J truck (original owner owns it), and it runs like it has for the past thirty some years. If you want a four barrel, you're gonna have to snag one from a rambler - like a classic/ambassador/marlin, a 4bbl 327 was an option with them. That manifold will take a carter AFB (or anything else that bolts to that pattern). (I can direct email it if you can't access yahoo, but it's a 500K file) http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/fsj-nw/vwp?.dir=/transfercase+hose+rerou te&.dnm=OEM+hose+routing.jpg&.src=gr&.view=t&.hires=t First, the axle shift motor needs to be permanently engaged (on left lower screen) Someone suggested taking the diff cover off, engaging the axle and re-installing the cover with the shift fork not in the slot, but behind it so it holds the gear engaged. (I have not tried it) Then, you go to the #6 port (rh side labeled front axle connecting) and remove the hose and plug it with a vacuum cap (I suggest adding sealer so it never leaks, or if you need a new vacuum motor due to rust, etc, that you get one from an '86 or newer rig. ) Then, you take the green hose as it comes off the dash switch and remove any extra connectors or hoses, so it only goes to the #5 (labeled rear port) Then take the yellow hose from the dash switch, and hook it directly to the #4 port on the transfercase motor (labelled front port on RH side) with no other hoses. Then, you can take the C clip off the back of the dash switch and remove the lock pin and spring that makes it a 2 handed operation. Congratulations! You now have shift on the fly! (note that all linkages and the shift motor should be lubricated to ensure smooth operation!) The excess plastic hoses can now be thrown in the trash or used to augment hosing in areas where high heat cause rubber hoses to deteriorate quickly. I'm heading up to BC on Friday. Will get firm pricing on J10 Stepside Fenders then. I'm driving mine up in my '99 WJ, but will come back with at least two sets so I'll probably use my "new" J10 trailer to bring them back. If you're serious about getting a pair email me at john-at-wagoneers.com I'm guessing they'll be in the $600+/ pair range plus shipping... gas isn't cheap so I'm not sure how to price them until I do all the math. The fabricator hasn't looked at 'em yet either. I'll also have to build a shipping crate of some kind for them... they're pretty big... they fit in the back of the Grand Cherokee ok, but shipping something that large will be a challenge... My PC is tango uniform, I nuked a critical file to the Sony Vaio and now I'm having one of those precious microsoft moments... anyone know the command(s) or file(s) that I need to change to get it to point at the original windows install vs. the new install I did to get it to boot? original was: c:\windows temp dir is: c:\winxp Hopefully it didn't corrupt anything in the original directory when it reinstalled... I've ftp'd my files to my linux and mac systems so I'm ready to reload the original OS on the Sony Vaio and sell it... it's not even a year old, nice system, but won't take a Linux Install... It's a Sony PCG-505DL... sweet little system... if you're interested make me an offer... I'm tired of messing with Microsoft and have several HP, Sun, Linux and Mac systems in my office now... :) (been selling HP C3000s on ebay...) anyway, let me know on the fenders...
