Alfa left the US market in '95. A distribution deal with Chrysler Corp, struck in '90 or '91 I believe, was bad from the start & began a slow death almost immediately. Alfa finally pulled the plug when they only sold slightly more than 500 units in the US in '95. With the GM/Fiat stock swap of a couple of years ago (Alfa being a Fiat subsidiary since '86), it was immediately declared that Alfa would return to the US in 2003. Due in large part to Fiat Auto's downward spiral, that date has been pushed back a number of times. Fiat now firmly states that it will be 2007. Even if they do come back (& I'll believe it when I see it), it sounds like they'll only send their most expensive, top-of-the-line cars here. We won't get their wonderful 147's & 156's. We won't see their twin spark 4 cylinder engines, & we certainly won't see their excellent diesel engines. We'll only have $50K plus Spiders, GTV's, & 166's. I think I'll just keep my Milano in good working order & probably look for a decent FSJ as a back-up vehicle. Coniferous forests around the world may be emitting more smog-causing nitrogen oxides than traffic and industry combined, suggests a report in the prestigious journal Nature. The report, released Wednesday, flies in the face of the accepted view that forests reduce pollution by absorbing it - a theory Canada relied on in demanding credit for forests as pollution "sinks" under the Kyoto climate change accord. But environmentalists aren't about to blacklist Scotch pine trees. They note that forest emissions are part of a natural balance that has existed since pre-industrial times and say man-made emissions are behind most pollution and global warming. Scotch pine needles release nitrogen oxides directly into the atmosphere when exposed to ultraviolet light, says a study led by Perrti Hari of the University of Helsinki. Nitrogen oxides are smog precursors: They combine with other pollutants to form ground-level ozone, a major component of smog. The emissions from Scotch pines increase in proportion to the amount of ultraviolet radiation they receive, says the study. "Although this contribution is insignificant on a local scale, our findings suggest that global NOx emissions from boreal coniferous forests may be comparable to those produced by worldwide industrial and traffic sources," says the report. Former U.S. president Ronald Reagan caused an uproar in 1980 when he said trees cause just as much pollution as cars. Quentin Chiotti, a scientist with Toronto-based Pollution Probe, acknowledged that forests contribute a variety of chemicals to the atmosphere, but was surprised at the comparison with traffic and industry. "If I walk through a forest am I going to be at risk for my cardiac and respiratory health? Unless it's a very unusual forest ... I can't imagine our health being at risk." Even though the emissions may seem large when calculated for the globe they have no local health effects because they are diluted in the global atmosphere, he said. Henry Hengeveld, a scientist with Environment Canada, said emissions from vegetation are part of a balance that doesn't change much over time. "They should be pretty steady at a pre-industrial level," he said. What matters for human health is the increments to that background level, he said. Kevin Percy of the Canadian Forest Service in Fredericton said he has problems with the suggestion that emissions from coniferous trees could exceed those from traffic and industry. "From my perspective, that would be pure conjecture at this point." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030312.wtree312/BNStory/Front - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2003 21:51:09 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: SuperDawg update Just got back from Centralia... dropped off the '99 WJ seats for SuperDawg... took a picture of the color sample with the seats and the original color. It'll probably be the only '83 J10 Stepside in the world with an extended cab and an airbag... ;) The WJ seats came out of '99 GC Ltd... they're leather, heated and have the power lumbar... surprisingly they didn't sustain damage in the accident... the yard said the thing sat for a long time, indicating that there was a fatality involved... there were beer bottles on the floor of the back seat, and the roof pillar had been cut... the seats smelled of river... they were pretty wet from sitting out. This rig is a red lonbox with a few character dents and some minor rust along the floor line of the box. The tailgate is actually better than the one I paid $200 for (it's been fixed up and painted to match Black Jack already or I'd swap it) The truck is N code (360 2 bbl with the usual clicking lifters and -at-95,000 miles) with T18a/D20 combo. Front axle is a D44 with 4.10 gears and J10 knuckles (wrong side drop for me) and rear is a Model 20 with 3.31 (the one from my '84 J10. I also have 3.54 in a CJ5 M20 and a set of used 3.08 gears from a CJ M20) I can reassemble it to drive away for -at-$850 (more with extras, like the brand new 36" tires I have on rims for +$1,000). With this deal, I will throw in the D44 factory SOA axle I have that can bolt in (currently with 3.08 gears and sitting under my J10), and a set of used D44 4.10 gears or the used D44 3.31 gears (from my J10's front axle) Also included are the 32"/12.50/16 RVT tires on old chrome Chev 6 lug rims. More goodies as I find them! Note that the installation of the D44 SOA front axle will lift this truck -at-8" alone! (rear would get rear shackle flip and 4" blocks) - ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim B Sent: Saturday, March 15, 2003 1:30 PM To: me Subject: '76 J20 (downgraded to J10 ) I'll be parting or selling a '76 J20 (depending which way I get the most money fastest) that is being down rated to a J10 real fast! What's the frame differences between a '76 J20 and my '84 J10? Maybe I'll just swap the motor and 4 speed into Black Jack and put the stroker in the '76. Since there is no more emissions here for '78 and older, I would have one less thing to worry to worry about! (or maybe sell the 360 and put my stroker in the '76 and sell Black Jack as a running 4.0L rig) The more things change, the more my plans seem insane! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2003 22:46:28 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: bull bars? Looking at the idea of having Australian Bull Bars made and import them to the states. Here's a couple that you may recognize: http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/bull-bars.jpg The question is, how much will we be willing to pay for these things? I'm looking into the shipping costs and will need to sell them for enough to cover the cost of time and materials to get them shipped from down under and then shipped from up here to where ever... Units like this sold for XJ's for about $750. Would most FSJ owners pay that much to get one of these? I'm not sure we can get them built, handled and shipped for that much either... we'll see... I suppose we could get one shipped here to the states and have one built... I guess I'm trying to decide if I want to get serious about marketing FSJ parts... I've got the Fiberglass J10 Stepside Fenders in work right now, kicking ideas around about a fiberglass tailgate/rear window and now this bull bar from down under. Since I'm out of work right now if this is something that is going to work it'd be good to go for it right now...
