I just drove it home now and noticed a few quirks. The W/S is cracked driver's side. Pass door has a BIG dent. Bench seat seems nice, but the shifter will take adjusting or getting used to! 4th is hard to find for some reason, unless I go 2nd to 4th, then I have trouble finding 3rd on downshift. Goes into 2,3,4 w/o grinding, and of course 1st and rev are non-synchro. (guess I'm spoiled with the precise shifting of the Commanche!) Truck sounded like a diesel locomotive coming up here (neighbor jumped to the window to see what cool vehicle was rolling up! He thought it sounded like a 1/4 mile street/strip rod) and did it pretty effortlessly in 3rd towing my '86 Commanche (sputtered twice and quit once from old gas. Needs a tuneup!) He had a minor ouchie with the tailgate, so it's not quite as nice as I remembered it was. Axles will be swapped this week (someone was asking me already about the 4.10 D44 front axle. Since I have another front axle that is already SOA, I may sell it) - -I was asked: Where are you located? - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim B" To: "me" Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2003 5:13 PM Subject: fsj: '76 J10 for sale or parts $850 obo > It's actually a J20, but I'm swapping my '84 J10 axles under it. I'll check there if no-one pops up) Jim Blair, Seattle, WA '84 J10 Black Jack, '86 Comanche 4x4 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2003 02:24:16 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: new cam: suggestions? A: Bit far away, but I have a CJ M20 here with 3.54 gears in it! What size tires will you run? The '76 J10 hauls serious butt with 4.10 and 34" tires (I think there will be less tire spin on takeoff with the 3.31s tho!) You really want to get a cam ground for EFI (Someone on the AMC-list and Mike Baxter have the notations) A lockup in the 727 with lower first and 2nd gears will make even highway gears more tolerable. From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: new cam: suggestions? Still working on putting a rebuilt 401 to replace my dead 360 in the '88. I now have the short block and correct flexplate, and will be getting heads from an eBay auction (ended last night). So I think the only thing left is the cam. Any suggestions for a cam? This will be a daily driver, freshly rebuilt 401 with TBI (from customefis.com; upgrading to a Chevy 454 system), TF727 and NP229 (I think -- whatever was stock in '88), 3.54 gears with rear posi (currently just has the stock 2.72s, but already have the parts for the upgrade). I'd like a good compromise between power and fuel economy. I _hope_ power won't be a problem with a 401 and 3.54s, but I do want more power than I had with the 360 and 2.72s, so just because I'll be getting more doesn't mean I want to trade it all back in for mileage. Especially low-end torque is always good. :) But I also want to be able to drive it on the interstate without the revs going TOO high. I'm not even sure how much some of those factors are influenced by cam (vs. just the gears and stuff). - - - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- I think mauve has the most RAM. - -- Pointy Hair - - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org - -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2003 02:30:36 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: RE: fsj: Alfas, diesels, ebay stuff & a slight bit of actual FSJ content A: Today, my project took a BIG leap! We got the J20 home, and we already have the 6 lug axles pulled out of Black Jack! (Wife came home and thought I had converted the J10 to a Hovercraft!) Next jump comes Thursday AM (weather permitting) when we pull the other rear axle and put the M20 in with the rear shackle flipped! (then we'll drop out the D44 front and put the SOA one in and put on the 32" tires) I'm getting tired just thinking about it! (Oh wait! It's 2:30 AM and I have to get up at 9!) From: john Subject: RE: fsj: Alfas, diesels, ebay stuff & a slight bit of actual FSJ content well, it's not on my list of projects for some time... I'm still trying to finish the 4.0L conversion on my J10... two years now... hopefully it'll be done soon... I have a friend that said he could put it together by Labor Day... 2001... then before Ouray... now I'm hoping by this June... :) we'll see... I know I could have had it done a long time ago, but I'm sure it'll turn out much better... But the 6.5L project is many years down the road, if ever... :( john ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2003 02:33:21 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Alfas, diesels, ebay stuff & a slight bit of actual FSJ content A: Maybe not for the V8s, but it IS available for 6 cyls! I've been buying them whenever I've found them... now I'm running out of room. :) Since I still don't have a full time job selling off part of the collection will help finances. I'm thinking of photographing each one and then selling it on ebay, prices will vary depending on what I paid for them... I figure I'll let the lists see them first and maybe sell 'em before I put 'em on ebay. :) Also, if anyone has any ladders for the firetruck I'd love to have them for mine.
