The rear axle looks funny with just those little 33" tires under it! LOL! I have to take pics yet and get new U bolts, then I'll be able to finish the writeup for FSJ magazine. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 May 2003 21:05:20 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: jeep Diesels At 10:42 PM 5/11/2003 +0200, Andreas Kreft wrote: >Am Mittwoch, 7. A: Edelbrock DOES make heads for AMCs, as well as intakes, cam kits, etc. Why not start a write in campaign? I'll run this past the Jeep guys as well and see what kind of Hornets we can stir up! From: "Eddie Stakes" To: Subject: Win Your Dream Engine from Hot Rod..NOT!!! Date: Sun, 11 May 2003 23:33:25 -0500 Boy, as AMCers, we are used to the being relegated in major national auto rags, whether we get a small photo in "readers rides" in the back pages, or a passing afterthought about AMC engines while boasting about the wonders of Chevy 350 and Ford 5.0s. I have probably said it a million times, you can only read so many articles about Chevy and Ford before you just want to puke. I like both Chevy and Ford, and have rented both when travelling out of town, or to swap meets, and grew up next door to a Chevrolet Dealership in Corpus Christi, TX; in fact, it was so close the barbed wire hung over the roof. But I have many, many wonderful memories of transport trucks unloading the new models, selling World's Finest chocolate to the workers to raise funds for my Catholic school and so on! And the cars were great too. I love Chevrolets and have a great respect for them. I would just never own one. Don't mean I want to subscribe to a variety of magazines only to see regurgitated bird doo about them every month! I like other brands too like Olds, Pontiac, Triumph, and so on. Well how many of you remember months ago there was a online poll about Hot Rod www.hotrod.com wanting to build a engine judged by how many online votes a marque got? I recall AMC was leading for weeks then the Poncho/Pontiac boys found out and flooded the website with votes; looked like Florida in 2000. It was really funny as many AMC fans were mad, thinking some Pontiac people had (and yes, they probably DID) have some software that allowed them to repeatedly vote over and over and over and over until AMC was just down to a meager 7% or so! Well....so I recently get my Hot Rod June 2003 issue. On page 24 it screams: "WIN YOUR DREAM ENGINE!!! Chevy, Ford, Mopar, Pontiac: HOT ROD BUILDS IT, YOU KEEP IT" Wow! Then you read the fine print in the article. "We've rounded up some of the top aftermarket companies to help us with the HOT ROD Win Your Dream Engine Contest. Full legal rules are on page 110, but the bottom line is this: Pick the parts you want from our sponsors, fill out the attached form, and get it to us by June 2, 2003. HOT ROD will select four engines to build and test-a Chevy, Ford, Mopar and a Pontiac or Oldsmobile-then we will ship them to the winners. Foremost, you gotta only pick parts available from our sponsors. As a result, you can't try to win a AMC, Buick, Hemi, Cleveland, or anything else Edelbrock doesn't make cylinder heads for." Oh well. At least we tried online and for awhile, it was nice leading the pack or at least thinking we were leading the pack at Hot Rod to get a AMC engine built! And so it goes... Maybe it is just me but darn it, there are more than enough nice AMC vehicles out there to be featured in national magazines, more than enough racers to do a how to build it engine article, more than enough trannie specialists to do a build up on some of the more popular AMC transmissions, in other words, we should not have to rely on the scraps and back pages some of these magazines commonly chunk us in, and have for years. Granted, there are several magazines out there that put us front and center with other marques, and we thank them for that, and my suggestion is to subscribe to them to support them, and send in your articles, photos and what have you. Cars & Parts, and Old Cars Weekly quickly come to mind, hopefully that new Muscle Car Enthusiast will follow suit! Still it is frustarating to see a wasted opportunity(?) by all the owners of concours level cars, those gearheads who commonly hit the tracks religiously, those engine builders, those trans builders, those suspension specialists, those who might have that little bit of knowledge that....if published.....could make the difference and bring in a new generation of AMC fans into the fold, all the while dispelling those myths everyone of us might have to put up with daily from the 'AMC never made their own engines' or 'AMC 390 is a Ford 390' or ' your Rebel was made by Dodge?' and so on. Sure, some of these ill informed people are only trying to make conversation. Others have this DECADES OLD mentality that exists about AMC. I also realize too that many magazines will NOT print much AMC, they have to cater to their crowds. And their crowds do not have AMC. You can't change everyone's minds, that is a certain. But sometimes people do indeed learn things and change their tunes. You can't win the war, but you sure as hell can win the battles with individual efforts! And I guess that is all we can ask for, those who are willing to take the time and let the world know different than what one has thought all these years about these vehicles. I cringe at the thought of AMC becoming a invisible marque like Studebaker. Studebaker are wonderful vehicles and no disrespect to them. But they for the most part are forgotten by the powers that be out there in the automotive press (ok, the have that great looking XUV) but rarely do you see anything about Studebakers in press. Hopefully this is not AMCs' fate. Thanks for reading, and now stepping down from the soapbox which collasped under 240 pounds of pure manhood. Ok, 240 pounds of quesadillas, jalapenos, and bbq ribs!
