I've acquired a nice '75 J-10 as a lake truck and would like to add power steering to it if it won't cost an arm and a leg. How do I go about doing it? Thanks, Brian Oklahoma City ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 2003 20:48:37 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Re: Rear spring help A: Sounds average to decent. According to my wife, working on the house is. Anyway, I got tired of trying to work around the closed knuckle Dana 44 of my front axle and I am part way through a front axle conversion. (chevy blazer axle + Bronco knuckles out) You may need to consider a similar axle conversion to get the open knuckles which are much easier to convert to different lug configurations. Oh, I also still have the old closed knuckle axle (minus the gears) if you are interested. A: Did you try bleeding before the combo valve? If no pressure there, then the master is TU. Oh! Wait a sec! Did you change the master for one from a disc brake rig? If not, then that's your problem. The disc brake master has no check valve (pressure retention valve) in the line for disc brakes or they won't retract (front brakes will stay partially engaged!). If that's already done, take a very clean penny nail (totally degreased) and slip it into the line for the front brakes to build pressure in the back 1/2. This will cause the valve to shift over and block the fluid from the front line (at least it's supposed to in case of massive fluid loss at the front) and allow fluid to the rear to be full flow. This is one of those tricks I got from the Monkeywrenchologist (my mentor who used to be a line mechanic for Ford when they built Model As) From: "george Andrews" Subject: Brakes are kicking my butt--any suggestions? More difficulty on the axle/brake swap. I swapped a '77 Dana 44 with disc brakes under my '73 Wagoneer. I replaced the master cylinder and installed the '77 brake booster. I have fluid down both lines to the combination/proportioning valve. Nothing comes out of the rear of the combination valve. I have pulled the doohickee forward per the instructions....still no fluid. When I pump the brakes I can get fluid out of both lines. I have tried 2 different valves! Any more suggestions? My next step is to purchase a new combination valve, then haul it to the brake shop. Seriously frustrated in the 105F heat! Check out the damage on each truck... This is some proof (as if we needed it) that the H2 is junk; basically just a lot of clutter on a very mediocre truck frame, and certainly not worthy of the Hummer name. I am a little disappointed that the Dodge has even that much damage, but I don't know how fast they were going, either. And note that the Dodge seems to have taken all the impact on one corner, where the H2 took it apparently across the entire front. Certainly nothing salvageable on the H2 in front of the human compartment, and likely nothing but small interior pieces in front of the rear doors. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's all a pigment of your hallucination. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Jun 2003 14:09:23 -0400 From: Mike Polkki Subject: Re: fsj: H2 collision there is a cool story behind that accident.
