(about removing bolts) From: "Dave & Avie Shaver" Subject: You learn something new every day! (about removing bolts) I learned a trick today. Had an exhaust manifold bolt broken off on my 71 232 head. Of all the bolts, it was closest to the firewall. A Jeeper who happens to work at the hobby shop on the base I live near placed the head on its side, put a washer over the hole and mig welded the washer to the broken bolt. Then he welded a nut to the washer and just unscrewed the bolt from the head. Saved me $$$$$. Just thought I would pass this on to others. From: Tom & Lisa King Subject: fsj: gas leak Hello all, Got an interesting gas tank leak on my 86 wag. I have noticed for some time that when my gas tank is full I have a gas smell. Stronger if I park on a slope. Last night I filled the tank up and drove home. Parked on a hill with the front facing DOWN hill. This morning the smell was very strong. Started the truck up and moved it to level ground. At that point gas began dripping out of the tank splash pan toward the front. after the splash pan emptied no more gas leak. It appears that the tank leaked over night and the gas collected in the front of splash pan. When the truck moved to level ground the gas ran out. Question is ... where is the gas coming from. Anything at the front of the tank that could leak. Removed the sending unit access panel .. no leak there. Thank Tom in Orlando ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 10:55:06 EDT From: Brazzadog-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: Re: gas leak My '71 has a couple of nipples on top of the tank for lines to the vapor cannister. One is right at the front of the tank. I just repaired a leak there myself. The all-new five-cylinder Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1 Turbo Diesel is fitted as standard with a sophisticated four-speed automatic transmission and goes on sale in November with an on-the-road price of #30,995 to complete the UK line-up of the American manufacturer^Ys luxurious four wheel drive range. Built in Graz, Austria, and equipped with a new diesel engine produced by VM Motori in Italy, this latest Grand Cherokee model joins the powerful 4.0-litre and muscular 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine models which have given Jeep^Ys flagship range a flying start in the UK, establishing it in recent months as the premier ^Xmust-have^Yluxury four wheel drive vehicle. The 3.1-litre TD model is expected to create a further boost in demand for the luxurious Jeep models but also to account for a significant proportion of those Grand Cherokee sales. One third of all previous model Grand Cherokees sold outside North America were equipped with the former 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine and manual gearbox. This level of demand is expected to increase with the arrival of the new and sophisticated turbo diesel engine and its automatic transmission. With 283 lb ft of torque - almost as much as the 4.7-litre V8 - the responsive turbo diesel unit delivers a remarkable blend of power, economy and ease of operation on road as well as outstanding off-road capability. The 3.1 TD is therefore expected to be particularly popular among those customers who tow horseboxes, boats, caravans or other types of trailer. It can tow loads up to 3500kg. The new engine produces 138 bhp which accelerates the Grand Cherokee from zero to 60mph in around 13.5 seconds and has a top speed of 108 mph. It returns 29.1 miles per gallon on the extra urban cycle, 24.1 mpg combined and 19.5 mpg on the urban cycle. Recently, in order to prove the fuel economy capabilities of this new engine, an attempt was made to drive a standard Grand Cherokee 3.1 TD from Dover to Cape Wrath, Scotland using a single tank of fuel. The Grand Cherokee fell short of its final destination by just 17 miles. In the process, driver John Taylor achieved an impressive 43 miles per gallon and covered almost 750 miles on that single tank of diesel fuel. Like the 4.7-litre V8 model, the new Turbo Diesel Grand Cherokee is equipped as standard with Jeep^Ys trail-blazing Quadra-Drive four wheel drive system, which not only provides the Grand Cherokee with unsurpassed off road ability on the toughest terrain, but maintains momentum even if only one wheel has traction. Combining the proven Quadra-Trac II transfer case with Vari^SLok progressive front and rear axle differentials, Quadra-Drive is a new concept in 4x4 systems. It provides outstanding responsiveness and traction under all conditions both on and off the road, without the driver having to shift levers or push buttons. The innovative Quadra-Drive system also improves handling stability in wet weather and on slippery roads by making maximum use of available traction during acceleration. Under normal conditions, most of the power is delivered to the rear wheels. However, the system senses any loss of traction and immediately sends power to the front axle, maintaining traction and control. Vari-Lok delivers drive to the wheel on the side with most grip to keep the Grand Cherokee moving. The luxury status of the Grand Cherokee 3.1 TD is underlined by the equipment which comes as standard. This includes infra-red dual zone air conditioning, alloy wheels, cruise control, anti-lock braking system, remote control central locking, Thatcham category one alarm and immobiliser, leather trim, programmable vehicle information centre, power adjustable front seats, 180 watt CD/radio cassette with RDS/EON, flip-up rear window and roof bars. The only option is an electric, glass tilt and slide sunroof for #900. Steve Gray, Marketing Director of Chrysler Jeep Imports UK, said: "There has been enormous advance interest for this new turbo diesel model ^Sespecially now that it^Ys possible to have all of the benefits of the diesel engine with the sophistication and ease of operation of automatic transmission. The outstanding capability of this model makes it a very significant addition to the line-up for us." As with all models in the Chrysler Jeep range, the new Grand Cherokee 3.1-litre TD is covered by a three-year/60,000-mile warranty and three years European roadside assistance. The new diesel engine is the result of teamwork between engineers from Jeep in the USA and Italian-based VM Motori. Designated the 531 C1EW, it replaces the four-cylinder 2.5-litre four cylinder engine which was fitted to the previous Grand Cherokee. The responsive and powerful new 3125cc unit not only delivers 138 bhp at 3600 rpm but also 283 lb ft of torque for smoothness and refinement. The engine was developed by Jeep and VM specifically to meet the demands of European motorists in terms of performance, refinement and running costs, while meeting all emission requirements. The electronically controlled injection system and five-cylinder EGR module assured the type approval of the product according to EURO2 standards. It is mated to a sophisticated four-speed automatic transmission, making the latest Turbo Diesel Grand Cherokee the first-ever Jeep model to provide the combination of diesel engine and automatic gearbox. However, the collaboration between VM and the American manufacturer is much more deep-seated than just the production of this engine. A new plant in Brazil ^SDetroit Diesel Motores do Brasil ^Sstarted production this year of VM engines for vehicles built at Chrysler^Ys Brazilian assembly plant and other US-based factories. Since January 1995, VM has been part of the Detroit Diesel Corporation, which is involved in the design, production, sales and service of diesel and alternative combustion engines for heavy duty application as well as diesel engines for automotive use. In fact, it produces a complete range of engines from 10 to 10,000 horsepower for construction, mining, industrial and marine use as well as for lorries, buses and military applications. The company provides service both directly and via a world-wide network of more than 2,500 distributors and concessionaires. VM^Ys specialisation within the Group is the production of high-technology engines with a power range between 20 and 250 horsepower. VM^Ys current production consists mainly of four families of engines for the most important diesel engine sectors ^Sautomotive, industrial, agricultural and marine. ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1950 **************************
