I suggest a Haynes manual, from your local auto parts store, it's not perfect, but will have your diagram, and a fair amount of other stuff that will become familiar, esp helpful is the ignition diagnosis, in my opinion, as well as the emissions section. Also a good place for preventive maintenance, which I would go through from front-to-back, regardless of the 'known maintenance history' The PS cap is on top the black sack shaped reservoir on the front-left(from the driver's seat) of the engine. This is probably the easiest thing to find/fill on the whole truck except the gas tank. I suggest trans fluid, or brake fluid, which are better quality than power steering fluid. Easy does it, it doesn't take much. There is a dipstick inside the cap that will help you fill it to the right level. Drive the truck and recheck afterwards. Let us know if you find a leak, the return hose coming from the PS box can deteriorate and leak, and make a big mess, and replacing it is not a big deal, but something where a shop will charge you too much. - - Landon 89 GW Austin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 10:05:43 -0700 From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: a few things... Hi, I've been absent for a week or so, thought I'd catch you up on FSJ stuff. Well, ever since the rubber trans lines let go and I added 7 quarts of fluid, the trans has shifted well 1-2, but spongy 2-3. Hmm. so I'm looking around in the Autozone (24 hr store) and here is a Valvoline Recommended lubricants - Jeep - transmission - Wagoneer 727 - '80-'91, says type 'MA' well what is that? of course, there's no Valvoline trans fluid in the store.... anyway, I figure out that Dexron III is NOT recommended for the 727 or 904, so I bought a filter and 5 quarts of 'Chrysler' trans fluid. It is darker, and I think, thicker. Fluid changed, shifts are nice and distinct. Any thoughts out there on the differences of the trans fluid? Also, definitely leaking from the dipstick tube connection to the transmission. I bought a tube in the help section that will fit into the transmission, but have no real idea how to install it. Next topic! Think this has been talked about.... Don't walk in and buy any old positive battery cable. NAPA has a 4 guage top mount, but the secondary wire (goes to the starter relay) is only 10 guage. This thing has to carry all the juice that charges the battery. What, are they kidding? A custom cable with at least an 8 guage secondary wire has got to be the only way to go. Truck is running rich, esp at full throttle, so I will change out the power valve, and maybe go to leaner jets (if I can dig up that mail from Jim with the Ford numbers) - - Landon 89 GW Austin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 10:15:51 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: a few things... I got sick at work sunday and couldn't go home because I had sold my only leftover rolling vehicle to make my mortgage (I had sold the '70 Ford pickup, then the Mustang went away Saturday AM. It was nearly hit by a felon being pursued by state patrol after he shot at them. That was 12:10 AM the 14th. 10 minutes earlier, and it would have been creamed because the car he hit while sliding sideways down the highway wasn't parked there yet!) My wife gave me a ride to work, and my buddy picked me up at 6:30 PM (I had been dizzy and sick almost all afternoon since 10 minutes after arriving, but the ride in his truck with the window down made me feel better for awhile) and we worked on putting a trailer hitch on his truck so we could tow a 260Z to the scrapyard for his friend today. I was tired when I went to bed, but not feeling too bad. Woke up this AM feeling slightly woozy, but went and picked up my son because today was pull the '73 J4000's motor day. By the time we got home, I couldn't stand up w/o rushing off to lose my lunch (and breakfast and dinner and breakfast from the day before), so my son and his friend pulled the truck motor for me and then they prepped our yard for the upcoming sale of the house (cut the lawn and weeded the garden some). By the time I was supposed to tow the car, I was too sick to go, but felt a little better a couple hours later, after a few more rounds with the porcelain bus. The guy with the '77 304 AMX called and came to pick us up (I was able to hold things down enough to get there and the fresh air again made me feel a little better) We messed around with my tire pile first (sorted out the stuff I don't want anymore and dumped out the water to get rid of mosquito larvae!) since the AMX had 4 flats from sitting, but I didn't have any to fit, so we took a chance they would pump up (all but one did easily) Seeing all the larvae and recalling being bit many times friday night got me wondering if what I have is the Nile Flu. (I was so sick, I almost went to emergency, but first tried the old trick of flour and water blended stomach settler, which helped a lot!) We went to get the car, and found several things had gone wrong since it was parked the year before. Someone stole the tabs and a headlight as well as the air cleaner. We put my battery in and it wouldn't start, so we jumped it with his car, but it was still no go. Starter was toast from sitting (one of our store's units!), so we went back to my place for one of the 6 or so spares and we couldn't find them! I ended up pulling the untested starter from the '73 (motor was seized from lack of oil and the starter just smoked) along with the cable, and one of the headlights because it was starting to get dark. Also grabbed a couple bottles of ATF (came in handy! Car was at least 3 down) We pushed the car up onto a mound in his driveway, and my son crawled under and dropped the starter out.... right onto his hand, where the frame meets the crossbar. That took him out of action, so I jacked the car up (too much gut to get under), but we didn't have the wheel block I asked my son to grab so I could crawl under safely (he did get a tire chock, which we needed too) and couldn't find anything around Tim's (the AMX's previous owner) place. Then a small brainstorm hit, and we used the floor jack to lift the car (we had no extra rims skinny enough to fit under the wheel because the jack didn't lift very high being low on oil.) then I used the dead starter under the tire to hold it up while I crawled under and did a quick change on the starter. The AMX fired right up after that and missed a little as well as clacked (to be expected after sitting a year) and when we checked the rad, it started bubbling after 10 minutes or less of running. Rats! Leaking headgasket! We took a chance and threw all the stuff we had brought with us into the car, and set off for home. It ran pretty good, but it needs an alignment (left strut rod bracket feels busted) but ran okay home, after a stop for premium Chevron gas (old stuff in the tank was a couple years old) and I blew out the filter (because it was popping out the carb when I pressed the gas too far, a sign of wter in the gas, plus I added some Heet to the tank and carb float bowl) ran much better up the hill home. It's now in the back yard, awaiting the 304 being pulled for the '73 J4000. I'll try retorquing the heads and air pressure testing the heads for leaks into the rad first, then fix whatever it needs and put the motor in the J4000. Good thing I bought the flywheel from Zach, because I will have to get it balanced to match the 304 as the one from the 360 TH400 is totally wrecked! (I don't think the 304 was run with a TH400 except in CJs maybe?) Hopefully, I will have a running truck before week's end. The AMX was nice to drive (except for the busted driver's seat and slight pull to the right) and I look forward to making it a 4.0L 5 speed with EFI (If I can get my wife to let me keep it) I sure hope this dizziness and sweats are gone tomorrow along with the heaves! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 08:19:39 CDT From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: REAL Hummer This is what a REAL Hummer can do: http://www.local6.com/news/2272794/detail.html Gotta love that pic. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When she told me I was average, I figured she was just being mean. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 08:26:45 CDT From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: Hummer (more story) A friend sent this in response to the Hummer story: Here's what really happened according to someone local to the story : The Story in the link above makes it sound like the guy intentionally ran over the robbers car (not that this would have been a bad thing), when that isn't what really happened according to witnesses and the driver of the Hummer. The guy in the Hummer was chasing the robbers to get a license plate number (or that's his story anyway), when the driver of the Honda Accord getaway vehicle made a sudden turn that his car (or his 'skilz') wasn't quite up to. He got into a massive case of push, the tires were turning right.. the car wasn't. The Honda went directly into a corner stopsign, knocking it down and stopping on top of it. Our hero in the Hummer, in a brilliant case of "me too", instead of driving past and stopping, tried to make the same turn, realized he couldn't, and mashed on the brakes. The laws of physics and a vehicle that is just way too heavy caught up with him, and he managed to replicate the Honda's push maneuver and ended up occupying the same spot. One passenger of the Honda got out an ran, pursued by the Hummer driver. After about a block or two, the Hummer driver stopped chasing him (read: He was about to keel over from a heart attack), and was assisted by passerby back to the accident scene. The police caught the guy a short time later. But I still think it looks like he drove back and forth over the car a few times. ;) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 09:26:50 -0700 From: "Dalan Hawker" Subject: fsj: Paper Gasket, Sealant or both I am wanting to remove the covers off my Dana 44 front and rear differentials because of some leaking.
