(unless you want to replace it real soon. It doesn't have lubricants in it!) ATF is fine as long as you change it once in awhile (gets too thin, then tears up the seals after a couple years of hard use) Tractor hydraulic fluid would work okay. (Maybe that's what Landon was thinking of) From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: engine bay diagram for GW Hi Ted, congrats on your '91 wag, and welcome to the journey of knowing and loving your FSJ. I suggest a Haynes manual, from your local auto parts store, it's not perfect, but will have your diagram, and a fair amount of other stuff that will become familiar, esp helpful is the ignition diagnosis, in my opinion, as well as the emissions section. Also a good place for preventive maintenance, which I would go through from front-to-back, regardless of the 'known maintenance history' The PS cap is on top the black sack shaped reservoir on the front-left(from the driver's seat) of the engine. This is probably the easiest thing to find/fill on the whole truck except the gas tank. I suggest trans fluid, or brake fluid, which are better quality than power steering fluid. Easy does it, it doesn't take much. There is a dipstick inside the cap that will help you fill it to the right level. Drive the truck and recheck afterwards. Let us know if you find a leak, the return hose coming from the PS box can deteriorate and leak, and make a big mess, and replacing it is not a big deal, but something where a shop will charge you too much. - - - Landon 89 GW Austin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 11:36:22 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: a few things... A: Actually, Dex 3 is just fine for our 727 and TH400 rigs (The Borg autos still have to run type F, but there probably isn't anyone on this list with anything Borg other than a BX1339 ) Don't know what the long term use of the Chryco stuff is going to do, but it was formulated to help cool and keep the clutches engaged on Chryco FWD vans with overdrive. I'm kind of funked out with a bug today, but IIRC, type MA is Dex 2 (Dex 3 is the same, but with friction modifier additives to help stop slipping in GM FWD cars) The dipstick tube needs to be same length as your current one and for a Chryco trans (The tube most people seem to like is the Lokar aftermarket one) One bolt holds it to the bellhousing (the bracket is just spot welded and tends to break loose) and the tube is just pushed into the seal. They tend to crack right at the bulge above the seal when the bracket breaks loose and they flop around too much. I don't know what I did with those jet numbers (someplace in one of the 600 emails I sent and kept a copy of for my website I'll do one day) From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: a few things... Hi, I've been absent for a week or so, thought I'd catch you up on FSJ stuff. Well, ever since the rubber trans lines let go and I added 7 quarts of fluid, the trans has shifted well 1-2, but spongy 2-3. Hmm. so I'm looking around in the Autozone (24 hr store) and here is a Valvoline Recommended lubricants - Jeep - transmission - Wagoneer 727 - '80-'91, says type 'MA' well what is that? of course, there's no Valvoline trans fluid in the store.... anyway, I figure out that Dexron III is NOT recommended for the 727 or 904, so I bought a filter and 5 quarts of 'Chrysler' trans fluid. It is darker, and I think, thicker. Fluid changed, shifts are nice and distinct. Any thoughts out there on the differences of the trans fluid? Also, definitely leaking from the dipstick tube connection to the transmission. I bought a tube in the help section that will fit into the transmission, but have no real idea how to install it. Next topic! Think this has been talked about.... Don't walk in and buy any old positive battery cable. NAPA has a 4 guage top mount, but the secondary wire (goes to the starter relay) is only 10 guage. This thing has to carry all the juice that charges the battery. What, are they kidding? A custom cable with at least an 8 guage secondary wire has got to be the only way to go. Truck is running rich, esp at full throttle, so I will change out the power valve, and maybe go to leaner jets (if I can dig up that mail from Jim with the Ford numbers) - - - Landon 89 GW Austin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 11:38:47 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Paper Gasket, Sealant or both A: I personally think it's a case of either/or. From: John Paramore Subject: Re: Fwd: Bad start to a Monday (long) Oh Good!...I guess...Now I feel better about getting the (XJ) Cherokee rolled into a ball. The good part about Sunday was that I won the year-long war with two governments over the NEXUS border crossing permit and now have it in my hot sweaty hands. The bad part was that the Jeep was totalled by Our Lady of Unawareness on I-5 on the way home from Canada. The fun came when I stopped at the end of a quarter mile line of idiots gawking at a car rollover on northbound I-5 at Alger (mile 240), and a woman in a Hyundai running about 80 hit the Jeep a ton. She tried to steer hard right, but really couldn't do anything with all four wheels locked up, didn't make it, and hit the right rear of the Cherokee hard enough to blow it sideways about 100 feet and roll it. Somehow, The Permit card, lying on the passenger seat when the world exploded, came out of the crash folded in half right about where the embedded chip is located...So I'll probably need to get a new one :-( There's not a straight panel on the Jeep, the whole chassis is bent enough that the doors won't open without a prybar and there are only three intact windows. It's clear to see that it's not going to be a fixer...And even if it could ever be put on the street again it would be so miraculous that I'd expect the contents of the cooling system to be confiscated by the Pope to increase the potency of the local stock of holy water. I had to kick the passenger door open to get out. I got to spend about four hours strapped to a back-board waiting for lack of circulation to make my butt fall off. In the long run I came out with only a sore neck that will keep me out of the raceboat for a while. I was kept strapped to the back board for about four hours before they loosened the waist and leg straps when I explained that I really needed to have those straps loosened, then when they gave me the song and dance about waiting for the doctor's OK first, showed them I was quite capable of getting out of them if need be. After that I was fine. X-rays showed no damage other than arthritis (at 64, what else is new), and mostly I laid there listening to the stories of other inmates. One, a burn victim, had decided to just pull the radiator cap off his overheated car (I didn't ask if he'd parked in the passing lane to do that) and another had been riding behind his kid on a four-wheeler when the kid blew over a hump in the trail to flip dad upside a nearby tree (Apparently all available idiots weren't on the freeway Sunday). At about 8:30 the E-room folk decided they were done with me, and ushered me out into the lobby. Fine...except I wasn't quite sure just where I was (somewhere in Mount Vernon, but where?) and the Jeep was in a tow yard, God knows where, so I'm fifty miles from home with no way to get there. A security guard said I could make a local call, but had to use a pay phone for anything more. He directed me to the cafeteria for change...The cafeteria was closed. I went outside to get some Idea of where exactly I was, and figured out that I was about Mid-Mount Vernon and uphill east of I-5, maybe a mile from the distant sound of traffic. I finally found change then discovered that the pay-phone was one of those independent theft ring booths (as in non-ATT, non-Verizon) that want about $5 more than I had in change to make a call. Plan two, use the VISA. This outfit only took Mastercard or American Express...Wonderful. Finally I moused a way to hook onto Verizon and called my ex-wife (closest, most logical, and beside's Linda's let me into my car in the past when I've locked myself out on dates, so she's used to the entertainment). Linda and Daughter Leslie zoom up to rescue me and I'm home by about 11. John I went up to the yard yesterday to take a few pictures and recover a few things like the tow receiver and that spendy VDO tach, plus other assorted trash like the garage door opener, Gimp parking permit etc. So far the recovered bits seem OK. Even the Laptop still works despite being flung out into the middle of I-5 in a great arc. I seem OK today...Lots better than Sunday night. I'm a little torn about the Jeep, Bugged that I put all that money into the new gearbox and front-end/brake work, but then thinking that it's been an accident magnet Three hits in the last three years, none my fault, and I'm probably well rid of it because the next thing would probably be a meteor strike right in my lap. You'll find that the covers are quite sturdy, a real nice piece of metal, but doesn't mean you have to really crank down on 'em. Sealant is probably cheaper, I don't know about longevity. - - Landon ============================== Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 09:26:50 -0700 From: "Dalan Hawker" < > Subject: fsj: Paper Gasket, Sealant or both I am wanting to remove the covers off my Dana 44 front and rear differentials because of some leaking.
