I picked up a '76 J20 after I already had an '84 J10 (and a '75 J10 parts rig) and swapped axles with it. Now I have a '73 J4000 that I am making into an 8 lug 1 ton tow rig (I'll have both those 3.73 ratio 5 lug D44 front closed knuckle and D60-2 rear axles for sale for $300 obo soon) The '76 was too nice to mess with making a tow rig out of, and for my wife to drive, I need an auto trans not a stick, so the '73 J4000 gets a 304 (from the '77 AMX I just picked up)/TH400 (unipattern nailhead trans with the AMC adapter ring)/BW 1339 with low range probably a PT kit (it has front hubs and the trans locks in park with the hubs open), D44 8 lug SOA front and D60 full float rear with 3.73 gears to haul -at-$$ with. If you want a really heavy duty lifted tow rig out of the '76, score the front and rear 3/4 ton axles from a Chev K5 Blazer or 4x4 pickup ('73 to pre IFS '87) (Gee! I just happen to have a pair of the 6 lug ones from a 1/2 ton '76 Blazer with 3.08 D44/12 bolt and the D44 front is already an SOA that will bolt in! You just need to put your brakes on it. I'm selling the pair for $200). Which trans are you going to run? The '84 has the opposite front drop to the '76. I also have the '84 J10/20/30 front axle with newly installed 4.10 gears, bearings and carrier for $600 obo. (without knuckles because I had them machined for my crossover steering, but I'll include the 6 lug brakes and inner axle shafts) I also got myself an Eagle wagon (258/998/NP129) for a temporary daily driver and as soon as I have something else running, the NP129 is coming out for sale (if someone needs a quick replacement for a NP229 or a viscous coupler for one, it'd be perfect!) It's being replaced with a NP208 (I'll need a longer rear driveshaft. Where on www.Wagoneers.com did John post the measurements we did on the NP208 and NP229/219/228?) and a 3" lift (custom made by me) so I can clear 33" tires. (already have some old TSL 33/9.5/15s around on Camaro 4 lug rims, and no, I didn't put them on the rims! ) From: "Neal Hoover" Subject: fsj: new purchase(s) it's been a while since i posted here, but i've been lurking for some time. before, i was mainly asking Qs about grand waggies, because i was going to use it as a tow rig for my business trailer. i was going for that old-school-classic look and keeping the vehicales in the jeep family (i've had XJs for years). welp, i went out and got myself into a world of hurt... i got not one, but *two* J-10's! one is a '76, the other is an '84. you can check 'em out here.... http://community.webshots.com/album/78027629NcJrML here's the general idea... the J with tires on it runs pretty well. 360 motor, GM turbo 400 tranny, quadratrack, D44's F/R. the guy who had it also put in an edelbrock intake and headers, 4brl holley carb, different cam, and brand new 35 x 12.50s! this rig also has the better frame of the two, but one of the shackle hangers is completely rusted off. the body on the other J is cherry! not a load of work to get it right. i'll fix up the body first, shoot it in the paint bay, and let it sit in there. then roll the other J into the garage, and take it down to the chassis. fix the shackle hanger, pull the top of the motor off and rebuild it, overhaul the carb, and whatever else rears its ugly head whilst i'm down to that level. once that's alll done, i pull the other J out of the paint bay and start slapping on the body. VOILLA! one kick-arse tow rig!!!
