It was white with a white cap, blue vinyl upholstery, 2.5 Liter TBI and seemed to run well. I think it was a Navy base utility rig. Unlike some of those, the bed wasn't all bashed up and the paint was still shiny. Pretty clean rig, but went too high for me. So did the Astro van I was really after. And the nice Cherokees with 60-75 K, etc. Walt Greenwood Everett, WA Still enjoying my great-running 73 J4600 with Quadratrac and factory 4-barrel. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2003 16:59:50 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: fsj: FW: Comanche followup thanx for the update... sounds like a nice one. If you want a fast rig I've been told the 2wd Comanche's with a 4.0L are the way to go. :) john At 03:49 PM 6/27/2003 -0700, allyoop wrote: >The Comanche sold this morning at the GSA auction in Kent for $2200. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the 2.8L! (although some did get the better 2.8L in late '86 just before the changeover. Early had 2 piece rear seal and later was 1 piece, same as Chev S10. I was tempted to get one and put the S10 2.8L and EFI in) Late '86 is when the V6 went away and they put the 4.0L in (2.54L AMC was still available till '99 I hear, but not too popular) From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: to comanche or not Hi Walt, Jim is really 'the man' to ask here, but I believe he will support: if it is an AMC 4cyl, get it. If it is a Chevy/GM/Pontiac Iron Duke/Tech IV, run away, run away. - - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 00:59:31 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: How good is Comanche 4 cylinder? A: The Commanche MJ didn't come out till early '86 (after Jan). The carbed 4 cyl was anemic (even worse with auto!) The TBI is a good 35 or so more HP, then in '91 they went to MPFI and gained a tad more (definitely better fuel economy!) From: Dan Black Subject: Re: fsj: How good is Comanche 4 cylinder? (If not, let me know because {- no-one has seen a 4 cyl carbed one yet!) They should've had carbs in XJ Comanches, if that's what you were saying... I'm told they had the XJ Comanches since the beginning ('84), and the 4cyl (and I assume 6cyl) were running carbs until '86 or '87. I guarantee the '84 2.5L/4cyl XJ Cherokee that I had (which my sister now has) has a stock carb. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 01:02:37 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: RE: fsj: Tuning Troubles A: The ground wire goes from the breaker plate (part that moves) to the outer casing. Just had a guy with '57 Chev pickup with same trouble earlier today (the whole dist turns) It quit in our lot (good thing for him!) I put a jumper wire to the casing, and it fired right up. Pulled the cable and it sputtered a couple times and died. From: James Isennock Subject: RE: fsj: Tuning Troubles I realize the SP2P isn't ideal, but with 3:31's and 33" tires it seems as if it will match my operating RPM's O.K. but I welcome any advice you have to give. Tell me about the grounding on the breaker plate, I haven't heard that before. Is it that as the advance comes in the pickup grounds? Should I be looking somewhere specific for evidence? Is it a wire chafing issue? or should I just buy a new pickup? The only work to the distributor immediately prior to the problem appearing was its removal and replacement during the cam/chain install. The TFI conversion and light springs I mentioned earlier have been in place and functional for some time. The AMC exhaust is (I think) on the opposite side, and clears the driveshaft easier. If it's a GM, it's probably not running any more... the XJ came out with the 2.5L 4 cylinder AMC engine, they also offered the 2.8L V6 Chevy motor... in '87 they came out with the 4.0L. The 4.0L is an extension of the technology used in the 2.5L design, but incorporates much of what had been in the 4.2L (258). The strokers have figured out that the heads and cranks will interchange and you can create a 4.9L I-6 out of the mix and match approach. Several folks on the XJ list have done this, a few have had failures though, but most of them love it. :) john >- L > >-----Original Message----- >From: john [mailto:john-at-wagoneers.com] >Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2003 10:46 PM >To: Tesar Landon-r16884; fsj-at-digest.net >Subject: Re: fsj: to comanche or not > > >At 07:26 PM 6/26/2003 -0700, Tesar Landon-r16884 wrote: > >Hi Walt, > >Jim is really 'the man' to ask here, but I believe he will support: if it > >is an AMC 4cyl, get it. The underside of the valve covers is cleaner than many newer engines. It ran low on oil because of the plastic oil pressure line popped on the previous owner, leaving oil all over the underside of the hood and intake and there were vise grips on what was left of the line. The carb and intake (Motorcraft 4100 and cast iron intake with EGR valve) are up for $100 (or they go on Ebay next); 360 Block and heads (with crank and balancer, w/o timing cover) $50 or will separate for shipping (heavy stuff is expensive by UPS); Timing cover with oil pump (will be inspected for wear and pics taken) $50; near new waterpump (if I don't need it on the 304 going in) $20; 998 2WD trans core $35 (from the '77 AMX and it needs the torque converter replaced as I'm swapping it with the one from my '82 Eagle); 360 oil pan $25 (with pickup tube). What years of CJs with 304 had TH400? I'm going to need a flexplate for the TH400 to my 304, or rebalance the one I got off Ebay from Zach for a 304 as the 360 one is missing a few teeth (I guess the PO of the J3000 tried many times to get it to turn over again!)
