Another option is to lift the rear seat, open the sending unit cover and pull the sending unit (after blowing as much dirt away as possible so it doesn't fall into the tank) and using a garden hose into the bottom of the tank (I did that on Elmo before removing the rear diff to put in lift springs, right before I discovered just how rotten the rear frame was and reassembled it and sold it, and bough Black Jack) From: "Toboggan Hill Farm" Subject: fsj: How to empty fuel tank What would be the best (easiest) way (other than driving) to remove the gasoline from the tank in an '83 Wagoneer? Thanks. I have an 89GW and no experience at this - that is, other than experiencing a noisy lifter. Also, does anyone have any idea as to the fuel economy differences - of course 10% of 10 is, well, one less mile per gallon, ha. Any smog test issues as well? His brother is looking for an NP249J transfer case or parts for it; it's from a '94 Grand Cherokee (with a 318, AWD, auto). If you have info, please reply to me or directly to him: Brian Penning Thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 17:29:27 -0400 From: "Neal Hoover" Subject: fsj: Re: RE: 401 heads into 360 sorry to butt in here, but i noticed something you said about 360 heads not sealing. is that common? the motor on my "new" '76 360 puffs a little blue smoke. i assumed rings. but you're saying valves instead? It has the selec-track system. The other day my wife was driving it on the freeway and it stopped running as if no power to wheels. It made a slight grinding noise as she rolled to a stop. The tow truck driver tried it and told her that it would work in 4WD but not 2WD (why does this always happen when SHE drives the rig and I'm at work?). Since having it towed, I intercepted it before any shop could look into it. I put it into 2WD using the vacuum selector. I went through all the modes and gear selections as a test. It all worked fine. Drove it for a few days and sure enough, it popped out of 2WD while I was behind the wheel. I stopped, put it into 4WD, then back into 2WD, and drove off as if nothing happened. So, what gives? I suspect a vacuum leak or bad vacuum motor that allows it to back out of gear towards neutral in the t-case. Could this be really happening? Anyone hear of this problem before? I guess I need to break out my tools and the service manual. Thanks for any info.
