I recently posted the bypass for the hoses on the http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/fsj-list page under photos. From: harry-at-vcnet.com Subject: fsj: 83' Wagoneer slips out of 2WD Hi, I'm new to the list and I need some help with my 83' Grand Wagoneer. It has the selec-track system. The other day my wife was driving it on the freeway and it stopped running as if no power to wheels. It made a slight grinding noise as she rolled to a stop. The tow truck driver tried it and told her that it would work in 4WD but not 2WD (why does this always happen when SHE drives the rig and I'm at work?). Since having it towed, I intercepted it before any shop could look into it. I put it into 2WD using the vacuum selector. I went through all the modes and gear selections as a test. It all worked fine. Drove it for a few days and sure enough, it popped out of 2WD while I was behind the wheel. I stopped, put it into 4WD, then back into 2WD, and drove off as if nothing happened. So, what gives? I suspect a vacuum leak or bad vacuum motor that allows it to back out of gear towards neutral in the t-case. Could this be really happening? Anyone hear of this problem before? I guess I need to break out my tools and the service manual. Thanks for any info. It's my daily driver and the price for the motor is reasonable - such that it would give me a relatively quick solution and I'd still have my 89 360 to rebuild at my leisure (assuming I can find space in the garage). My experience is nil and I need to know if there are any real issues with compatibility. From my reading looks like the manifolds should from my 89 should fit (since the change was made in 79) - may be a bolt diameter issue but it appears to be easily remedied. Any thoughts/advice before I pull the trigger on this deal? OOH yeah, and emissions testing is big down here so I would need to be able to pass that. Thanks. Remember that the change to the chrysler junkflights didn't happen until 1980, so that 79 will have a TH400 behind it (unless it's a clutch). You'll need to use the flexplate from the 89 motor, and the crank sleeve is different, so make sure the tranny side of the crank looks the same as the 89 so you don't burn up torque converters. If you can get the manifolds from the 79, do it, often times it's a pain having to deal with exhaust manifolds. Gentlemen, I'm considering replacement of my '73 j truck windshield with a used one. But I have a few questions: Are all J-truck/Wagoneer windshields the same? Anybody have great tips for how to do it? Does the metal trim go on before putting the unit back in the cab, or after? Rope? Sealer?
