From: Joe Morrison Subject: fsj: Wagoneer Identification G'day I have recently purchased a Jeep Wagoneer and was wondering if anyone could help me with some basic identification information so that I can sort out the insurance. Firstly, if a vehicle is built in 12/73 and registered in '74 is it officially a 73 or a 74 model? The Vin no is J3M154CA71282. I can work out most details from the Vin decoder but does the J3 designate a particular series (J3 or J300 perhaps)? I'd appreciate any translations you can provide. Thanks for helping me! Picture was very clear, we would call it B4wiel-asB4. I speak a couple of languages: English. French, German, Spanish, Flemmish/Dutch. It is not a big deal because we are being taught at school a lot of languages and I also like it very much. (If you like to speak some French, we canb&) Technical things are sometimes a bit difficult but I hope I manage. We have planned to go to the states in the month of august, the beginning. What would be the best part of the country to look for Wagoneers you think? We are looking for a 4 door, no Cherokee model though. Round head-lights would be ok too. I really donB4t know where to search on the internet anymore, I tried a lot already. Are you from Canada? I have some family in Edmonton. Sounds like you want a '73 (first year of quadratrac) to '78 unit then. The rust depends on what part of the country the rig came from here. There are a few '62s that are immaculate still! And some '91s (last year built) that crumbled to powder. Axle is the part the wheels attach to and turn (see enclosed picture). What written languages do you know besides English? I may be able to translate myself or use the www.altavista.com Babelfish translator to help. (I speak some French, because we were all taught in Canada and Spanish since about 40% of the people around here speak it and I am learning slowly! ) Square headlights can be put on the older rigs, but I believe 77/78 was the first factory years for these. (If you don't come before January, you can get a '79) Does he want a 4 door wagon? Or 2 door Cherokee? I heard him say something about quadra-tac, 4 wheel-driveb&It is nice but not necessary. He wants a nice looking car, but he actually does not really have a lot of wishesb& He just likes the model very much, it should not be too rusty, he is willing to work on it and to travel to the US to get it. The '80 to '91 have Dodge 727 transmissions with AMC cases and new process transfercases (front axle is on the driver's side instead of passenger's side) Check out pictures on http://www.wagoneers.com What kind of accessories does he want? Well, I don't have one, but the FSJs usually weigh around 4600lbs. (My '88 weighed 4620 with a full tank of gas and no humans. I think the '74 was a bit lighter, but within 100lbs or so, and I might have subtracted the gas on that one.) So get one that can haul at least 5000lbs, pref. at least 3 tons to be safe. Convenient that the university has truck scales and they just leave them on... Anybody can just drive up and on them and see their weight. It's not a problem because most people don't realize it, and of those that do, few have any reason to weigh their vehicles, and certainly not often.
