A: The whirring noise was the transfercase viscous coupler trying to engage. (it's probably toast if you tired too hard) The vacuum lines for the 2WD to 4WD shift motor are probably not functional. I had to put a spring on mine (AMC Eagle, but same transfercase w/o low range) to keep it engaged in 2wd. 4lo tends to be a little noisy (make sure it still has oil in it. If ever run low of oil, the gears get a little chewed up) 1980 will be either NP219 (full time 4x4 with no 2WD unless you modify it with parts from the NP229) or NP208 (slightly shorter than 219/229/228, but MUCH stronger. GM used them with their diesel engines. Not usable on dry good traction surfaces in 4x4) From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: RE: fsj: rebuilt 727 problems or is it the 229 messed up? i had atf in the 229...hopefully the shop didn't change it out for 80-90 oil... i have another tc from a 1980 wag-ltd (jeffs-parts-rig). is that a 228 maybe? is a 228 the same length as a 229? - - -jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 2003 11:23:17 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: rebuilt 727 problems or is it the 229 messed up? A: NP208 is non-viscous coupler, non-differentiated (part of the reason it's shorter and stronger is because it doesn't have the extra geegaws inside) You can unlock the front hubs and run in lo range to get 2lo. NP219 is viscous coupled and differentiated (in 4hi, but not 4 hi lock or 2lo lock. Don't know if it has 2 lo w/o lock) NP228 is non-viscous, but it is differentiated in 4hi. Center carrier is locked in 2 hi and 4 low. NP229 is viscous differentiated in 4hi. Center carrier is locked in 2 hi and 4 low Quadratrac is clutch coupled in high, but locked in E-drive high or low range. (unless it has been converted like mine. Mine even seems to have the 16% overdrive kit in it because with 3.73 gears, 29" tires, 304 2bbl, and TH400 in drive the truck does 80 mph no problem. Stopping from that speed is a bit of an issue at the momnet though! ) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: rebuilt 727 problems or is it the 229 messed up? Gears are 10-41 so I assume that's 4.10 (front one under the converted Jeepster was 3.73 11-41 which I am using) I also have the '84 J10 D44 front axle (Driver's drop) for $350 with fresh 4.10 gears, bearings, carrier and seals. Axles are included and so are the knuckles this time (I only have 6 lug brakes but they are easy to convert to 8 lug. If you want to go Ford 8 lug dual piston, for $100 more I can get you both Ford F250 rotors and calipers with all the bits and pieces) Jim Blair, Seattle, WA '84 J10 Black Jack (getting lifted and stroked!), '73 J4000 304/TH400/QT tow truck (soon!), '83 Eagle wagon (soon to be modified!), '77 AMX (being parted)http://www.virtualjeep.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2003 00:36:57 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: '91 300d has a rear locker... I just changed the oil in my "new" '91 300D with the 2.5L Turbo Diesel and decided to see if that ASD locking differential really worked... so I decided to go up the hill... I quickly learned two things. 1) a mercedes sedan does not have very good ground clearance 2) a mercedes sedan does not flex or articulate. However, once I realized that I couldn't approach the hill the way I do in the Jeep, I did invoke some wheelspin and was able to keep both rear tires on the ground... and sure enough I went up the hill with a yellow triangle light up on the dash. Got to the top of the hill where I really knew I'd have ground clearance issues and tried to pick a line (it's dark outside, around midnight ;) that would permit me to miss the big rut and the fence... well, slowing down caused me to get in trouble in the wet grass... Michelin MXV4's are great on the road, even wet roads and they do so so in snow... but in wet grass they are totally useless... and that's when I learned that the rear locker was really a locker, as I gave it some throttle the entire rear end of the car started heading for points of trouble... so I rolled back down the hill a bit, gave it some throttle and managed to avoid any body damage or an embarrassing stuck in the field. :) I don't plan on taking this thing wheeling again, but it sure was pretty cool. It's not like the 123 hp 168 ft pound 5 cylinder 2.5 liter turbo Diesel is going to actually spin it's tires or anything... well, maybe wet roads... :) http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/91-300d-2.5L/ later, john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... Please (please) tell us that you >are going to keep this one a while... >G I think so. I've been looking for a nice car for a long, long time. I've managed to buy, fix, sell, trade and work my way up the food chain. I'm going to have to sell two of my computers along with the other benz, rims I have laying around, and use my teaching money for the next couple of months to pay for it, but it doesn't need any major repairs, has been well cared for and is a class act. :) I switched it over to amsoil synthetic and changed the fuel filters last night. If my wife likes driving it then I could be using SuperDawg as my daily driver and she'll get it instead of a car payment, I mean a '99 and up WJ. ;) we'll see... but this benz is very nice, nicest one I've ever owned. I've had 115, 116, 123, 126, 201 and now the 124 chassis. A nice blend of ride, road feel and handling... some of the features on this thing are quite impressive... it's got a belly pan under the engine! four screws and it's off. Anyway, gotta remember this is the fsj list... you'll have to pop onto the DieselBenz list to chat more about it. :) Trying to decide if I should paint SuperDawg this smoke-silver instead of the color we selected. The smoke-silver may be too light and may clash with the existing colors of superdawg's interior. The color we selected and Curtis shot on a sample already complements the benz. I just prefer lighter colors, easier to maintain, hides imperfections and maintains cooler temps, also up here lighter colors help the psyche on overcast days. :) btw, saw an '80 J10 stepside yesterday, the guy was asking $1,500, I offered him a grand if he couldn't sell it by the end of the week (he's moving), he called me and said a guy came by with cash and bought it for a grand... It had the 258/4speed, was fair to poor overall, but well worth the money. I tried to get my son to go for it knowing that if I brought two vehicles home on the same day I'd not make my bride very happy. The way it is right now she's quite happy with what I brought home, much to my relief. :) Now, if I can just get superdawg back home we'll have all this vehicle stuff sorted out and stable. :) I do know he's going to turn out great. I can see us just having SuperDawg and this 300D. Not sure we'll get rid of the 245,000 miles '87 XJ though, no one will buy a rig for what it's worth and it's too good to get rid of, so it'll make a nice spare vehicle. john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html '91 MBenz 300D 2.5L TDiesel http://wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/91-300d-2.5L/ '87 Cherokee Pioneer (XJ) - http://wagoneers.com/XJ/rigs/johns-87 '75 J10 trailer-http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/J10-trailer/xj-J10-trailer.jpg under construction: '83 J10 stepside(SJ)- http://wagoneers.com/SuperDawg Rambo will probably be staying in Centralia, he's with SuperDawg right now: '67 J-100 Panel (SJ) - http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/johns-67-Panel/ Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2003 15:10:36 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: free '70's FSJ hood I just picked it up from the Buy & Sell, but it's green (with the chrome side strips), so I don't want it.
