From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: fsj: xfer case: converting 229 into 228 ? hi folks- i live close to a big jeep yard in fontana ca (scotty's)...they say that if i remove the viscous coupling from my 229 it'll be a 228. does this sound right? i can just take the "jello" out? also does $225 sound like a fair price for a bench-overhaul for my current 229? thanks, jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 01:30:39 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Mattress Springs Under Wagoneer A: I'd use an oxy-propane troch and have it all off in about 15 minutes or less! The Eagle wagon is nearly zero rust, but I have only registration available for it (owner moved to Wisconsin w/o finding the title) $350 complete or I'll have to part it out. (I just got doorhandles and other stuff for it and was seriously going to fix it till my latest mortgage check wiped me out) Interior is well worn, but not yet horrendous. (basically a daily driver) If someone buys it for this price, they get all the parts listed below except the transfercase. If parted: Complete running 4.2L motor (plastic cover) ODO sez 144K, but I don't think the motor is original. Runs well (in spite of several vacuum leaks due to different year emissions on the car and motor not hooked up right) $250 obo (installation can be done for extra $$) 998 trans working but sold as core, because it has a bad lockup torque converter or stuck valve body (it locks up on takeoff and stalls the car, but worked well once the car was rolling) $50. Extra Windshield (from '77 AMX but also fits Eagle, Hornet, Gremlin, etc) $25. Front Axles $25 each 2.37, 3.08. Model 20 AMX rear axle 3.08 open ratio $75 (I was going to put it in the Eagle for a heavier duty rear end than the Model 15 3.08 currently in there) NP129 transfercase (same as NP229, but w/o low range) $75; NP208J transfercase $200 (came from my '84 J10, but I was going to use it in the Eagle with minor mods to make a tow rig); '87 Cherokee Model 15/Dana 35 rear axle 3.08 ratio (could also be used to beef up the Eagle with 1 piece axles) $50. '77 AMX V8 2 core rad $25. Jim Blair, Seattle, WA '84 J10 Black Jack (getting lifted and stroked!), '73 J4000 304/TH400/QT tow truck (it's alive!!), '83 Eagle wagon (soon to be parted!)http://www.virtualjeep.com ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1983 **************************
